SHAKESPEAR, William (Shakespeare)
Jacob Tonson 1714 - 12mo. Vols 2-8, lacking only vol 1. This is a made-up part set. Vols 2 & 3 are from one set, vols 4, 5 & 7 from another set, and vols 6 & 8 from a third set. The set was issued in both 8 and 9 volume editions, a ninth volume of poems being added to later sets. This is the 8 volume edition, the last book having 'End of the Eighth and Last Volume' on the final page, followed by the index. Collated complete. All books have a volume title and contents page, plus a title page and frontis for each play. Condition: worn contemp. calf, some bds loose, needs rebinding. Contents are generally quite crisp and clean, much better than is usually found in early editions of the Bard. The following defects have been noted: vol 4 has sm. stains at fore edge at end; vol 5 has sm. ink smudges on title, and red ink mark affecting bottom tips of about 40 pages; vol 6 has sm. piece torn from bottom corners of A4 and A5, not affecting text; vol 7 has light stain at head of pages throughout; vol 8 has a little light staining affecting some early pages. ***This is an extremely attractive edition of Shakespeare with woodcut head and tail pieces at the beginning and end of each play, as well as a cut to the title pages and copperplate frontispieces. It is also by some way the scarcest 18thC edition of Shakespeare's works, much scarcer than the 1709 first 8vo edition. We would be interested in purchasing a copy of vol 1. 7 vols of 8. Derschau, Christoph Friedrich von)
2 Tle. in 1 Band. Mit gest. Frontispiz von Johanna Dorothea Philippin, geb. Sysang. 2 Bll., 183 S. 192 S., 1 Bl. Lederband d. Zt. Goed. III, 372, 80, 4. - Etwas berieben.

A La Haye, Chez Pierre Husson, 1714. Two volumes in one. (2), 260 pp.; 138, 88 pp. 8vo. Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt with raised bands, red label with gilt lettering, sprinkled edges, some imperfections to front cover. First French edition of Treason unmask'd: or The Queen's title, the revolution, and the Hanover succession vindicated, 1713; which is an attack on The hereditary right of the crown of England asserted, by George Harbin. The work by Harbin was wrongly attributed to Hilkiah Bedford. Bedford was sentenced to three years imprisonment and a fine. The reverend George Harbin became chaplain to Francis Turner, bishop of Ely, whose exemple he followed at the Glorious Revolution by refusing to take the oaths to the new rulers. After Turner's death he became chaplain and librarian to Viscount Weymouth. The Glorious Revolution brought William of Orange on the throne of England and his acceptance as the ruler of England, with his wife Mary, daughter of James II of England, deeply devided the Anglican Church over whether William and Mary could be legally recognized as sovereigns, and a group of Anglican ministers refused the oaths: they were called "Nonjurors".The Glorious Revolution removed the Catholic king James II from the throne and also prevented a French-English alliance coming into existence. In the year this translation was published the House of Hanover (mentioned in the title) came to the throne with George I as monarch of Great Britain and Ireland. The first part of the work is entitled "Le Masque de la Trahison Levé dans la Defense du Droit Hereditaire d … [Click Below for Full Description]

(NDB XXI, S. 68-69). - Einband gering fleckig, guter Zustand.

The frontispiece and engraved plates depict scenes from the Ilias; they were designed by Fr. Roettiers, Nattier, A. Dieu, & F. Delamonce, and executed by Edelinck & Chaufourier. Another small wormhole near the gutter of the blank left inner corner of the last half of the book) (Note: The French classical scholar Anne Dacier, 1645-1720, published in 1699 a French prose translation of the Ilias of Homer. She wanted to rehabilitate the poet, who suffered from a bad reputation in France because of inferior translations, with a translation which would restore Homer's original lustre. It was thought that Homer's poetry was bad and implausible, and sometimes improper. The French author Houdar de la Motte, 1672-1731, took it upon himself to prune Homer, and produced a refashioned and civilized version of Madame Dacier's translation. He used her translation, because he didnot know any Greek. In 1714 he published his translation of the Ilias, reduced to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dordrecht, Jacob en Pieter Keur, en te Amsterdam, Pieter Rotterdam, en Pieter Rotterdam Jr. 1714. (gegraveerde titelpagina, 19) 302, (2) 134, (12) 164, (2) 66 folia.
