      - Köpenhamn, dero königl. Majest. und Universit. privilegirten Buchdruckerey, (1714). 4:o. A4-X4,Y2. (=172 s.) Lagerfläckig och med enstaka småfläckar. Nött samtida marmorerat pappband. Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. Bibl. danica III, sp. 289f, med annan titel. Klemming, Sveriges krig, s. 284. Warmholtz 5765. ?kapitulationen i Tönningen? [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Beck, J.A. Blunt: "delightful views of the gardens and palaces of Germany, Austria and Italy"; Nissen BBI 2078 - Pritzel 9849 - Kat. Ornamentstichslg. Berlin 3324 - Dunthorne 323.

¶ Brunet II. 191 - Hoeffer XI, 338-340

A rare and important work. The author's contributions to cardiology were of great importance. "By injecting mercury into various vessels and internal organs, of living animals and fresh human cadavers, Vieussens was able to trace the exact course of the blood's flow in differents parts of the body. He confirmed the hypothesis that there is a continuous vascular pathway between the arterial and venous vessels. In cardiac pathology, he was the first to describe mitral stenosis and aortic insufficiency on the basis of both clinical and anatomicopathological observation. Vieussens had already noted that disease of the aorta manifests itself by a characteristic pulse, which was rediscovered a century later by D. J. Corrigan, whose name it now bears" (DSB, XIV, 26) Français

General title and three pages; 3 leaves in total. Disbound from a collection. Repaired at spine, with a few visible old stitch holes; else excellent. One of the first known examples of a government-sponsored award to stimulate scientific research, the Board of Longitude was authorise to award a first prize of £20,000.00. to any person who devised a system capable of measuring longitude within a half degree of a great circle, and lesser amounts for schemes of a lesser accuracy.

Johannes Ernst Grabe (1666-1711) was born in Königsberg, and began his career as a Lutheran theologist there. In the 1690s he underwent a crisis of faith, where he came to the conclusion that Luther had been wrong in his break with the Catholic church. He published his accusations in a text entitled "Dubia" in 1695. He intended to convert to the Catholic Church but under the influence of the answers he received to his "Dubia", especially by the pietist Pilipp Jacob Spener, he instead emigrated to Oxford and found his doubts answered in the English church.

Illustrated with an allegorical frontispiece. Title page in red and black. The first French edition appeared in 1706. Plein Velin contemporary flaps. Smooth back. Gilt. Arms stamped on the flat (partly faded gold on the back cover). Both speech Noodt originally appeared in Latin in 1699. Noodt was a distinguished professor of law (Franeker, Utrecht and Leiden) which was influenced by the thought of Grotius.

B. Begräbnisse, Hochzeiten, Rechtsprechung, Fasten (Ramadan) usw. - Gwbräunt.         Essais De Theodicée Sur La Bonté De Dieu, La Liberté De L'Homme Et L'Origine Du Mal.

Amsterdam: Isaac Troyel, 1714. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Three parts in two volumes. 12mo (163 x 93 mm). [36], 386; [2], 216, 132 pp. Drop title Discours de la conformite? de la foy avec la raison on page 1 of first volume, separate title-page to part two and separate pagination with drop title Reflections sur l'ouvrage que M. Hobbes on p.1 of third part in second volume. Contemporary leather, spines with 5 raised bands gilt in compartments (rubbed, old paper label to foot of spines). Internally only little browned, minor spotting in places. Provenance: College Royal de Juilly (shelf-mark to free endpaper, small stamp and inscription to title pages). A fine set of a very rare edition.Second edition of the most popular work published in his lifetime. Consciously written at a popular level, this became the most widely read of his works. Leibniz coined the term "theodicy" here to mean "justice of God" or that branch of philosophy seeking to reconcile the existence of evil with the assumption of a benevolent God. Composed as a response to Pierre Bayle's view that faith and reason are in opposition, Leibniz tries to reconcile philosophy and theology. "In the preface to the Theodicee, Leibniz declares that there are two famous labyrinths in which our reason goes astray: the one relates to the problem of liberty (which is the principal subject of the Theodicee), the other to the problem of continuity and the antimonies of the infinite" (DSB). The work was composed with the encouragement of Sophia Charlotte of Brandenburg, who wished a reply to Pierre Bayle's view that faith and reason are in opposition. The work includes a reply to the views of Thomas Hobbes on liberty, and a brief essay on the qualities of the deity. A very rare issue of the second edition by Troyel with only two copies recorded in OCLC/Worldcat: Wolfenbüttel Herzog August Bibliothek and Dresden, Sächsisches Landesmuseum. Very Good.

Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica. Auctore Isaaco Newtono, Equite Aurato. Edition Ultima, Auctior et Emendatior.

Sumptibus Societatis, 1714. In 4° (mm 260x205). Pagg. (28), 484, (8). Glosse a lapis al margine a qualche pagg."It is in this edition of the Principia that Newton's famous additions to the theory of the motion of the moon and the planets appear, as well as many other important additions and corrections. This entire edition was reset in Amsterdam and the text corrected according to the Corrigenda. The woodcuts and plates were also re-engraved." (Gray, p. 10).4to; (28), 484, (8) pp. Title printed in red and black with engraved device and motto "Vis Unita Major", folding engraved plate of cometary orbit facing p. 465 and numerous woodcut diagrams in the text. Contemporary vellum over boards, gold title on spine; a good copy with some paper discoloration. Second edition, first Amsterdam issue of Newton's work, revised on the second printed edition (Cambridge, 1713).

        Shinko^sei HONZO^ KO^MOKU

1714. Good. [BOTANICAL] Li Shizhen, revised by Ino Jakusui. Shinkosei HONZO KOMOKU. Kyoto & Edo. Shotoku 4 [1714]. Ohon size, 26.8 x 17.7 cm. Ino [1655-1715], an important traditional doctor, revised and enlarged Li Shizhen [1518- 93]'s seminal work of materia medica, which had been imported into Japan through Nagasaki in the early 17th century. Hayashi Ranzan [1583-1657] procured a copy of the Chinese edition in Nagasaki in 1607 and presented it to the Bakufu, which undertook a variety of state sponsorship of herbal medicine, planting two herb gardens near Edo, one in Ushigome and one in Shinagawa. There had been at least one Japanese printing of the original Chinese work in the mid 17th century but the edition at hand, the revised and enlarged Japanese edition of this important work, is the definitive version, undertaken by Ino Jakusui [1655-1715]. The HONZO KOMOKU would go through several subsequent Japanese editions and there is at least one exhaustive version done in modern Japanese in the 20th century, as well. Our copy is complete. There are 52 volumes, bound in 37, then another 12 supplementary volumes bound in 8, for a total of 64 volumes bound in 45. Of the 45 bound up volumes, four are illustrated in b+w woodcut. The printings throughout are good or better. Most volumes have their original worn title labels. There is very little internal soiling, but some worming throughout. Very unusual in any state, even more so in this good condition throughout.

Hardcover / Original, very unsophisticated and rough looking full calf-bindings, with very beautiful original orange-marbled endpapers. Despite the rough condition of the bindings, this is a spectacular set ! The interior in especially excellent condition with the emblematic illustrations and the paper in superb quality. The bindings stronger rubbed. Hinges weak but holding. Bookplate of Philip Ducarel on pastedowns of all three Volumes. Philip Ducarel has also written his name of the titlepages of all three Volumes. Philip Ducarel was possibly the nephew of Andrew Coltee Ducarel (1713-1785) who became Keeper of the Lambeth Palace Library, and was an antiquary and archivist of distinction. In 1711, he collected his mature works into a single volume and added to them extensive notes and commentary, naming the book Characteristics of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times (C). He revised the Characteristics over the course of the next two years, up until his death in 1713. A new edition came out in 1714. Shaftesbury took great pains to design illustrations for the Characteristics, which he thought would advance his central claims as effectively as the written text (see Paknadel 1974) (Source: Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy).nn_____________________nnIn 1711, the Characteristics of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times appeared in three volumes, also without any name or initials on the title-page, and without even the name of a printer. These volumes contain in addition to the four treatises already mentioned, Miscellaneous Reflections, now first printed, and the Inquiry concerning Virtue and Merit, described as formerly printed from an imperfect copy, now corrected and published intire, and as printed first in 1699.nnThe declining state of Shaftesbury's health rendered it necessary for him to seek a warmer climate and in July 1711 he set out for Italy. He settled at Naples in November, and lived there for more than a year. His principal occupation at this time must have consisted in preparing for the press a second edition of the Characteristics, which appeared in 1713, soon after his death. The copy, carefully corrected in his own handwriting, is preserved in the British Library. (Wikipedia)

NCBEL II, 1096. ESTC Citation Nos. T77575 and T77578. Near Fine Mandeville's famous book, one of the most influential 18th-century contributions to social and economic thought, originated in a 433-line poem published in 1705, "The Grumbling Hive: or Knaves Turn'd Honest," which argued for free trade, prefiguring Adam Smith's laissez-faire economics. In defense of the numerous attacks against his poem, Mandeville elaborated it into a full-scale book, the 1714 first edition of Fable of the Bees, comprising 'An enquiry into the origin of moral virtue' and twenty 'remarks' annotating and explaining various lines in the verse fable. While claiming that every calling and trade has vices, he showed that these vile ingredients combine to produce a wholesome society, balancing individually unpleasant elements, as in the great, thriving metropolis of London itself: only if London were less flourishing would the streets be cleaner; their dirtiness was a necessary evil. The Fable attracted little attention, but in 1724 Mandeville published a second edition, enlarging the remarks (including, for example, a discussion of how thieves contribute to the public good) and adding "An essay on charity and charity schools" and "A search into the nature of society." Here offered is the fourth edition of 1725, along with the second edition of Part II (1733), "which is, in fact, an entirely new work. In six dialogues, Mandeville argues that The Fable is an entirely moral and religious work which has been grossly misrepresented, then goes on to develop an extensive 'conjectural history' of how human beings developed from savagery to civilization." Internally only little browned, minor spotting in places. Very Good.

        Shinko^sei HONZO^ KO^MOKU

, 1714. 1714.
