NAVAL ARCHITECTURE)
Nine full-page brush & ink illus. 20 folding leaves. 8vo (238 x 160 mm.), orig. wrappers, sewn as issued. Japan: at end is written "1712." A fine manuscript describing the design and construction of atakebune, large Japanese warships which were built in the 16th and early 17th centuries. At the end of the manuscript, we find the name "Yuken Masafusa Hojo." The Hojo clan, which enjoyed its greatest power in the 12th- and 13th-centuries, remained a force in Japan for many centuries. They built numerous fortified castles and military ships and in 1645 Ujinaga Hojo (1609 or 1610-70), wrote Heiho Yukan [in trans.: The Paragon of Military Strategy], one of the most important books on the subject published in Japan. The Japanese warships described in our manuscript consist of a rectangular wooden box above the hull. The sides were covered with copper or iron panels and ornately decorated in gold and silver. The bow of the ship also had iron protection for ramming. Small holes or windows were built along the side of the ship for guns and bows. There is a recipe using lacquer, oil, and pine tree resin for waterproofing the ship. Numbers of required samurai and seamen are also provided. The illustrations depict cross-sections and side views along with an image of the mast with sails. There are also images of handheld weapons (spear, hooks, etc.) and ladders to attack warriors on opposing ships. The final eight pages contain a description of a sea battle - we are unable to determine which one - with details of numbers of different kinds of warships (including the smaller seki bune and … [Click Below for Full Description]

One of the classic South Seas privateering voyages, and the source for "Robinson Crusoe." "Edward Cooke was second captain on board the 'Duchess', the ship which accompanied the 'Duke', both under Captain Woodes Rogers, on a privateering voyage around the world... It is generally accepted that Daniel Defoe used this account of Alexander Selkirk's years on Juan Fernandez Island for his 'Robinson Crusoe' as it was the first book containing it." See Hill 372 who notes that this first edition was "hastily produced ... in order to beat Woodes Rogers's account to the market." See also Streeter IV, 2428. Howes, C-733. NMM Catalog IV, 99. A classic account, bound in later full calf with raised bands and spine label. Some rubbing. Front board and first signature nearly detached. Roberto Bellarmino - Congregazione dei Riti gesuiti jesuit Zuccherinius, Joannes , Montecatinius, Thomas , de Grandis, Felix. Galileo
Rev. Camera Apostolica, Roma.

FREIND, John.
London: Printed by Philip Gwillim, for Jonah Bowyer. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of the first academic lectures on chemistry published in England. Freind was the first holder of the Readership in Chemistry established at Oxford in 1704, and he lectured in the Ashmolean Museum, emphasising the importance of accurate experimentation. George Wilson had earlier given chemistry lectures in London, on which his Compleat course of chymistry, 1698, was based. "In 1704 Freind was appointed professor of chemistry at Oxford, and delivered a series of lectures which were published in 1709 as Praelectiones chymicae. In these he attempted to explain chemical phenomena in terms of atoms and a Newtonian short-range force, following the work of John Keill... A second edition of Freind's Praelectiones chymicae was published in Amsterdam in 1710, leading to a critical review in the Leipzig Acta Eruditorum. Freind replied in a Latin letter in the Philosophical Transactions in 1711 in which he defended Newton's theory of matter. The German criticism was part of the wider debate between partisans of Newton and Leibniz on the origins of the calculus. Freind's defence of the Newtonian position undoubtedly paved the way for his election to the Royal Society in March 1712. In that year he issued an English translation of Praelectiones chymicae which included his reply" (ODNB). See Musson & Robinson, Science and technology in the Industrial Revolution, p. 32. Neville, I, p. 480, with a long note. Partington II, p. 480. This edition not in Cole or Duveen.8vo, pp. (xvi), 200. Title within double rule … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pomet, Pierre.
Pr. for R. Bonwicke, William Freeman, Timothy Goodwin, et al, 1712. First edition of the first appearance in English of Pomet's famed catalogue of pharmaceuticals, originally published in French in 1694. In his capacity as "Chief Druggist to the late French King Lewis XIV," Pomet (1658-99) gained a highly favorable reputation for his knowledge and use of botanical and other drugs, and in 1694 he presented as much of his knowledge as he thought wise in his Histoire générale des drogues. This English edition adds material from the works of Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708) and Nicolas Lémery (1645-1715), and was translated by Joseph Browne (1673-1721), a Lincoln College-educated physician and satirist. Highly influential in its time, this materia medica covers botanical, zoological, and mineral sources and is illustrated with => 86 etched plates, mostly with four specimens per plate; but there are also full-page images of a silk factory, a fishery, and of "negro's [sic] making Roucou." Other plates are of unicorns, whales, rhinos, and elephants. The volume is printed in roman type with some italic in double-column format, with its plates close to the texts that refer to them; the main title-page and that of vol. II are printed in red and black. The => Americana content is noteworthy, with discussion of cacao, chocolate, "long American pepper," tobacco, and so on. Two surprising sections are devoted to glass manufacture and achieving color in glass, and soap making. Provenance: Front pastedown with small ex-libris reading "Wisdom of God in Creation" on a garter, … [Click Below for Full Description]

GREENE, Robert.
Cambridge: Printed at the University-Press, for Edm. Jeffrery. SOLE EDITION. An enquiry and attack on the scientific principles of Hobbes, Locke, Spinoza and Descartes. Almost half of the book (pp. 195-391) is devoted to light and colours, including the phenomenon of the rainbow, with a large chapter on sound. Greene dismisses the Cartesian theory of light in favour of Newton's, which he refers to as "the Modern Philosophy." The first half of the the book is devoted to other aspects of physics, including the existence of a vacuum. At the end is a separately paginated work on the geometry of solids. Newton is frequently quoted, but in his next book Greene turned his guns on Newton himself. "Educated at Clare Hall, Cambridge, Greene was awarded an MA in 1703 and remained a Fellow of his college for the rest of his life. Eccentric, verbose, and something of an ego maniac, Greene was one of the first British scientists to seek to dismiss Newtonian physics and to substitute for it alternative foundations" (Gjertsen). See Gjertsen, The Newton handbook, pp. 241-242, citing Greene's later The Principles of the Philosophy of the Expansive and Contractive Forces (1727), and passing over this earlier work. Similarly it is not in Babson, Gray or Wallis.8vo, 2 parts with continuous signatures, pp. (lxx), 391, (1) blank; (viii), 38, (2) adverts, 1 folding woodcut diagram. Cruquius, Jacob
[Click Below for Full Description]

Krukius (Cruquius). Volgens Fockema Andrea & Koeman in Old maps and their makers (1975) is dit "the most beautiful map of Delfland, the Kruikius map is stunning"?.Nicolaes Samuel Kruik (1678-1754), alias Cruquius, werd bekend als waterbouwkundige en cartograaf. SCHUPP, Johann Balthasar.
Auf Kosten guter Freunde. [Frankfurt, Geiger, ] 1712 - 8vo, engraved frontispiece, pp. 133, [1] avertisement; title printed in red and black; contemporary blue beech boards, extremities a little rubbed and paper discoloured. Second edition, revised and enlarged, of Schupp's half-serious, half-satirical depiction of the vices of servants, first published in 1658 under the title Sieben böse Geister. The 'seven deadly vices' of servants are: unwillingness to serve; need for entertainment (which makes it harder for clergy to find suitable staff); fickleness and unreliability (as soon as servants have signed up for employment they hear of a more tempting placement somewhere else); leaving without notice; not listening to orders; and bad-mouthing previous employers. All these are described with much practical example. In the interest of fairness, Schupp concludes with two depictions of unreasonable masters: a young military nobleman, irascible and violent, and a well to-do, but miserly doctor's widow, saving and scrimping excessively. The final characterisation is devoted to the fate of apprentices who are prone to exploitation, mistreatment and cruelty by their masters, and parents who exploit their children. The work thus serves as a realistic depiction of seventeenth century master/servant relations.Schupp (1610-1661), was a professor of rhetoric, satirist and theologian, and published a number of works of social criticism. The fine engraved frontispiece depicts three household scenes: chatting maids who are oblivious of whatever is boiling on the stove, lazy servants, and fina … [Click Below for Full Description]
