Caicedo y Velasco, Agustín de.
Villafranca. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

His sonatas are in the Italian style of Corelli and are generally of the sonata da chiesa type... The bass parts are more independent than those of John Loeillet of London, not only in the fugal second movements, where they may play an equal part, but also in the slow movements, where they often have their own rhythmic patterns throughout the movement; his basses often start a movement with two or three bars solo before the recorder enters. Legal Education; University of Louvain
1712. [Legal Education]. [University of Louvain]. [115 Broadsides Announcing Examinations and Other Academic Events in the Faculty of Laws]. Louvain, 1712-1794. 115 folio broadsides (17" x 13"). Light toning, some minor stains, flaws, tears or worming, small stab holes to top center margins (for filing), all generally in very good condition, though one broadside has flaws affecting text. 47 broadsides have brief contemporary annotations (usually a note on the examination on verso, some notes relate to legal content). An interesting collection. * Disputations were important events in the early modern university. They functioned as exams, inaugural events and teaching exercises. Our collection offers 115 unlocated broadsides from 18th-century Louvain, mostly from the 1770s, advertising disputations in law. The broadsides list the name of the candidate or speaker, the date of the event and the legal passages and questions that will form the basis of the examination or disputation and the presiding professor or respondent. 46 examples in this collection are the equivalent of present-day bar exams. Two of the broadsides are for theological disputations on law-related subjects and one is a broadside poem in Dutch from 1712 congratulating a law student (one Jan Baptist Coeck) for having passed his exam. 47 items have annotations. Most are notes relating to the event, some are jurisprudential comments. A complete list of the broadsides is available on request.

ALGAROTTI, Francesco. [NEWTON]
First edition, first issue, of one of the earliest and most influential popularizations of Newtonian science, not just optics (as stated on the title) but the whole system including universal gravitation. "Translated into six languages and published in thirty editions, it served as one of the main channels through which Newtonian ideas reached the general European public (Gjertsen, Newton Handbook, p. 14).

The work takes the form of a series of dialogues with the 'Marchese di E?', in which the two keep up a gallant banter as she is quickly drawn into the romance of science, though as Algarotti warns, in speaking of Descartes, 'The Mathematicians... are said to resemble Lovers. If what you grant them at first be ever so little, they know how to make so good an Advantage of it, as to lead you insensibly further than you ever imagined'. So keen is the Marchese to continue their conversations that when she sees a tiresome sonneteer approaching, she asks Algarotti what to do to fend him off and they agree to talk mathematics until he gives up. And when Algarotti explains universal gravitation, the Marchese muses, 'I cannot help thinking... that this proportion in the Squares of the Distance of Places, or rather of Times, is observed even in Love. Thus after Eight days Absence, Love becomes sixty-four times less than it was the first Day, and according to this Proportion it must soon be entirely obliterated. I fancy there will be found, especially in the present Age, very few Experiments to the contrary'.

The frontispiece shows Algarotti (1712-64) with … [Click Below for Full Description]
