Cooke, Edward, Capt.:
London. 1712.. Two volumes. [24],456,[10, Index],[2, ads]pp. plus three folding maps and seventeen plates (numbered 1-16, plus one unnumbered plan); [8],xxiv,328,[8, Index]pp. plus five charts (three folding), two plates, three folding tables, and numerous woodcuts in the text. Contemporary paneled calf, expertly rebacked. Faded contemporary ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper of volume two, front flyleaf of volume two repaired, minor scattered foxing. Very good. In a custom half morocco slipcase. First edition of both volumes. Cooke was commander of one of the ships in the buccaneering expedition of Capt. Woodes Rogers which circumnavigated the globe, visited the coast of California in 1709, and preyed on Spanish shipping on the west coast of South America. There is an account of California, with a plate showing a native of the region. The expedition also put in at the island of Juan Fernandez, where they discovered the castaway, Alexander Selkirk, the prototype for Robinson Crusoe. The second volume includes a description, taken from a Spanish manuscript, of the west coast of America from Tierra del Fuego to California. A rush to issue an account of this voyage developed between the publishers of this narrative and that of Woodes Rogers. The first volume above is distinguished from the second edition by not having a volume number on the titlepage and having the text that was later duplicated in the second volume. An important buccaneering and Pacific voyage. HILL 372. HOWES C733, "b." SABIN 16303. NMM 1:99. WAGNER SPANISH SOUTHWEST 77. STREETER SALE 2427.

COOKE, Edward
London: B. Lintot and R. Gosling, A. Bettesworth and W. Innys, 1712. Octavo, with two folding maps and eighteen plates and plans; early panelled calf, in excellent condition including folding aerial plan of the Peruvian capital Cusco. William Dampier's last voyage. First edition of a famous English buccaneering voyage, prepared to beat Woodes Rogers' personal account to the market. This cruise was the last voyage of William Dampier: 'the expedition of 1709 and 1710 had been proposed by Dampier, but he 'was in such reduced circumstances as to engage himself [as] pilot on board the Duke' (Burney). Cooke was second captain on the {i Dutchess} which accompanied Captain Woodes Rogers's {i Duke} on a privateering voyage around the world. Amongst the work's wealth of detail are an account of the sacking of Puna and Guyaquil, the taking of an Acapulco prize ship, and a full translation (including extensive woodcut illustrations of coastal profiles) of a captured Spanish manuscript, effectively being a coasting pilot for the American coast from Tierra del Fuego to California. This was not printed in Rogers's account. Of great interest is the large and detailed folding map of the Amazon river and her tributaries. Cooke claims the map was drawn in 1707 by Jesuits and discovered aboard a Prize captured around that time (he does not specify if this occured during the cruising voyage of the {i Duke} and {i Dutchess).} It was on this voyage that the Scot Alexander Selkirk - the original for Defoe's {i Robinson Crusoe} - was picked up, and this work cont … [Click Below for Full Description]

Second edition of this collection, after the first of 1706. The Society was charged with propagating the gospel in many far-flung regions, including to the Indians of the British colonies in North America and to blacks in the West Indies. Included is the charter granted the Society by King William III, the Society's request for fit ministers to be sent abroad, a description of the qualifications of such ministers, the standing orders of the Society, and instructions for clergy and schoolmasters as to how they should comport themselves when on their missions. CRUQUIUS, N[icolaas] and J[acob]
[1712]., Delft. Cruquius's large wall map of the Delft Region Oblong folio, (530 by 690mm), title, key sheet, and 25 engraved maps, lacking two title plates, half-calf over brown marbled paper boards. Beautifully engraved map, a reduced from of the wall map, of 't Hooge Heemraedschap van Delfland prepared by Nicolaas and Jacob Kruikius. Decorated with the Delfland coat of arms supported by 2 allegorical figures in its centre: 10 large coats of arms of the water district officials down the left and right sides, an elaborate compass rose (north above right): and pastoral scenes. It shows every city, town and village. The compass rose is remarkable, with a globe at its centre showing Africa, Europe and parts of Asia and South America: with gods representing the sun, moon and planets in the other seven: and a celestial map with figures representing signs of the zodiac between the points. The Delfland dike and water authorities commissioned the surveyors Nicolaas (1678-1754) and Jacob Kruikius (1684-1706) to produce the present map in 1701, and they devoted more than a decade to the task. By the mid-century only one of the original dike and water authorities remained in office. The main map was not revised, but the overview map was replaced with a newly drawn and engraved one, ordered in 1750. °Postma, Kruikius\' Kaart van Delfland 1712

Here is pictured for the first time for Western eyes such a flower as the Camellia, under its Japanese name Tsubaki." Keill, Jo. WITH Picolo [Piccolo] WITH Derham, William WITH Leeuwenhoek, Anthony van WITH Hauksbee, Francis
FIRST EDITION OF JOHN KEILL'S PAPER "ON THE LAWS OF CENTRIPEDAL FORCES" COMMUNICATING A THEOREM DEVELOPED BY NEWTON AS WELL AS KEILL'S CONSEQUENTIAL OPINION ON THE LEIBNIZ/NEWTON CALCULUS CONTROVERSY. The Phil Trans is the oldest continuously published journal of an academy of science. As such, the Phil Trans established the important principles of scientific priority and peer review that have become the central foundations of scientific journals ever since. Works in every field of science are present; in addition to that of Keill, there are important works by Derham, Leeuwenhoek, Hauksbee, and Piccolo and Kino. More importantly, however, wading in to the Leibniz v. Newton debate on the discovery of the new calculus, Keill would level the charge that Leibniz made only cosmetic changes to Newton's calculus theorems before presenting them as his own. Though the disagreement raged, Keill greatly upped the anti with his publication of this paper. Keill wrote: "All of these laws follow from the now highly celebrated arithmetic of fluxions which Mr. Newton, without any doubt, first invented, as anyone who reads his letters published by Wallis can readily determine... yet the same arithmetic, under a different name and method of notation, was afterwards, published by Mr. Leibniz in the Acta Eruditorum." Keill claimed that Leibniz only changed the name and the mode of notation. Offended, "Leibniz complained to the secretary of the Royal Society of bad treatment and requested the interference of that body to induce Keill to disavow the intention of imputing fraud. ROGERS, Captain Woodes
London: Printed for A. Bell and B. Lintot, 1712. Octavo, five folding maps including the frontispiece, old ownership inscription to title page, bookplates; a good copy in old dark calf, rebacked with most of original spine laid down. Dampier's last voyage. First edition of one of the classics of British buccaneering, a great adventure story and an important Pacific voyage account which is 'very rare' (Borba de Moraes). Despite its relevance to Dampier, who sailed as pilot on this privateering expedition which crossed the Pacific to Asia, this work was not included in the 1729 collected works, making this an appealing addition for owners of that set (see catalogue number 121). Rogers great success was the capture of the Manila galleon at Puerto Seguro, but he also rescued Alexander Selkirk - the prototype for Robinson Crusoe - from Juan Fernandez Island. Rogers' eye-witness account is rich in stirring adventure and gives a wonderfully atmospheric account of the buccaneering life, not hesitating to show himself as a tough captain controlling an errant crew. Although the cruise amassed tremendous loot, conflict between Rogers' and his men dragged on for years in the courts, and Dampier never lived to see his share, dying in 1715. The work also contains and important early description of California (pp. 279-312). The significant 56-page Appendix, with four folding charts, is sub-titled 'A Description of the Coast, Roads, Harbours, Rocks, Shoals, Islands, Capes, Makings of Land, Courses and Distances, from Acapulco… to the Island of Chiloe… … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pierpont, James: Mather, Cotton [preface]:
Boston: Sold by T. Green, 1712.. Boston: Sold by T. Green, 1712.. [2],xxiv,46pp. 12mo. Dbd. Early ownership signature in foregmargin of titlepage. Text tanned. Final leaf torn in upper outer corner, affecting fewer than ten words. Good. Pierpont, a Congregationalist minister in New Haven, was instrumental in the founding of Yale. In this sermon he preaches on the uplifting optimism of the faith, taking as his inspiration Psalm 119, verse 116, "Uphold me according unto thy Word, that I may Live: and let me not be Ashamed of my Hope." Of special interest is the 24- page preface, written by Cotton Mather, in which the famous New England divine discourses on the "blessed hope" of Christianity..."a hope of blessedness in a future state, in an other world." Mather thought so highly of his prefatory essay that he published it separately, later in 1712, under the title A SOUL WELL- ANCHORED. Scarce, with the Brinley copies being the only previous ones that we can find in the market (one of those two copies purchased by the American Antiquarian Society). Holmes locates five copies in all; rare. ESTC W2561. EVANS 1581. HOLMES, COTTON MATHER 299-A. SABIN 62757. BRINLEY SALE 2179, 7706.
