(6 ll.), 157 pp. *** First Edition in Portuguese? We have seen references to editions of Brussels, 1717, and Lisbon, 1721, 1732, 1737, 1758, and 1815. However, the licenses date to 1699, and since this seems to have been the sort of book that was read to pieces, possibly earlier editions in Portuguese will eventually surface.Genevieve of Brabant is a heroine of medieval legend. A chaste wife, she was repudiated by her husband the Count Palatine Siegfried of Treves. She lived with her son in a cave for six years, until accidentally found by her husband, who had meanwhile discovered that the accusation of adultery was false and was eager to restore her to her rightful position. The story first became popular in Ceriziers' L'Innocence reconnue, ou vie de Sainte Genevieve de Brabant, 1638, of which this is a translation. Genevieve's story remained a common subject for German dramas into the nineteenth century and even later: Puccini's Suor Angelica is said to be based on it. Several features seem to be unique to the Portuguese text. … [Click Below for Full Description]

"A very rare privately printed pamphlet dealing with the French offers to cede to Britain the territories of Nova Scotia, Hudson's Bay and the Straits, Newfoundland and St. Christopher. The author puts the case for the British title to all these as well as the fishing rights off Newfoundland. An important and contemporary document on the contest for naval power in the New World"--O'Dea. Relates considerably to the fact that the French receive back Cape Breton and Nova Scotia, and England to have sole right to Newfoundland. The writer shows that England has the prior right to Nova Scotia, and also the danger of having the French at Cape Breton and so near the Newfoundland coast. .

Pomet, Pierre.
London: Pr. for R. Bonwicke, William Freeman, Timothy Goodwin, et al., 1712. 4to (22.5 cm, 8.9"). 2 parts in 1 vol. [8] ff., 420 (i.e., 440) pp., [6] ff.; 86 plts. First edition of the first appearance in English of Pomet's famed catalogue of pharmaceuticals, originally published in French in 1694. In his capacity as "Chief Druggist to the late French King Lewis XIV," Pomet (1658–99) gained a highly favorable reputation for his knowledge and use of botanical and other drugs, and in 1694 he presented as much of his knowledge as he thought wise in his Histoire générale des drogues. This English edition adds material from the works of Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656–1708) and Nicolas Lémery (1645–1715), and was translated by Joseph Browne (1673–1721), a Lincoln College–educated physician and satirist.    Highly influential in its time, this materia medica covers botanical, zoological, and mineral sources and is illustrated with => 86 etched plates, mostly with four specimens per plate; but there are also full-page images of a silk factory, a fishery, and of "negro's [sic] making Roucou." Other plates are of unicorns, whales, rhinos, and elephants. The volume is printed in roman type with some italic in double-column format, with its plates close to the texts that refer to them; the main title-page and that of vol. II are printed in red and black.    The => Americana content is noteworthy, with discussion of cacao, chocolate, "long American pepper," tobacco, and so on. Two surprising sections are devoted to glass manufacture and achieving color in glass, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Qualche gora chiara. Cartonato d'attesa coevo. ?Giuseppe Antonio Alberti nacque a Bologna il 29 genn. 1712. (DBI). DITTON, Humphry
B. Tooke and D. Midwinter, London 1712 - Small 8vo, Pagination: pp. xvi, 1-48, 49-50 absent but text continuous, 51-164, 167-168, 165-166, 171-172, 169-170, 6 plates, 173, [1]. Ditton (1675-1715) was a mathematician, and master of a new mathematical school at Christ's Hospital for which this book was written. With William Whiston he derived an impracticable scheme for the determination of longitude by the firing of a shell set to explode at a certain height. He published several other noted works including "The General Laws of Nature and Motions" (London, 1705, a commentary on Newton's "Principia"), and (with Whiston), "A New Method for Discovering the Longitude both at Sea and Land." (London, 1714). Our copy of "A Treatise of Perspective" is complete, with Errata page, although some of the latter pages are bound out of order. The last part of the book is "An Appendix containing a brief Account of some Things of Use, in the Art of Perspective", and includes comments and suggstions on stage design, "lights and shadows", "pictures in pictures", etc. The last page of the book contains an advertisement. The book is dedicated to Francis Nicholson "General of Her Majesty's Forces in North America". On the blank page, on the reverse of the dedication page, a 19th century former owner has practiced his signature. There is a signature to the bottom margin of the title page. The text shows some foxing, mainly to the margins. The six folding plates are foxed and have been repaired by our conservator. DEZALLIER D'ARGENVILLE, A.J.].
London, Printed by Geo. James, 1712. 4to (252 x 200mm). pp.(16), 218, (2), with 32 double- or folded plates. Contemporary calf, richly gilt spine in 6 compartments with red gilt lettered label, sides with gilt borderlines with coronet corner-pieces (old repair to hinges). Rare first English edition of Dezallier d'Argenville's 'La théorie et la pratique du jardinage', which was published anonymously in 1709 like the present first English edition. The most important work on garden design in the eighteenth century, with plates after designs by Alexandre Le Blond. The work popularized the manner of Le Nôtre and his school in the laying out of ornamental gardens: parterres, bosquets, fountains, basins, and cascades. André Le Nôtre (1613-1700) designed or redesigned the gardens of Versailles, the Tuileries and Fontainebleau. The book ran to 11 editions, in three languages. "The English version of d'Argenville's work first appeared in London in 1712. The translator was the noted London architect John James. It is well produced on good quality paper and profusely illustrated, the plates being the same as those in the original French work, but re-engraved by Michael van der Gucht. 'The theory and practice of gardening' deals fully with the design and formation of fine gardens, commonly called pleasure-gardens. [and] must have been the inspiration of many formal gardens designed in England during the early part of the eighteenth century."(Henry II, p. 493-495). London. 1712.. Two volumes. [24],456,[10, Index],[2, ads]pp. plus three folding maps and seventeen plates (numbered 1-16, plus one unnumbered plan); [8],xxiv,328,[8, Index]pp. plus five charts (three folding), two plates, three folding tables, and numerous woodcuts in the text. Contemporary paneled calf, expertly rebacked. Faded contemporary ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper of volume two, front flyleaf of volume two repaired, minor scattered foxing. Very good. In a custom half morocco slipcase. First edition of both volumes. Cooke was commander of one of the ships in the buccaneering expedition of Capt. Woodes Rogers which circumnavigated the globe, visited the coast of California in 1709, and preyed on Spanish shipping on the west coast of South America. There is an account of California, with a plate showing a native of the region. The expedition also put in at the island of Juan Fernandez, where they discovered the castaway, Alexander Selkirk, the prototype for Robinson Crusoe. The second volume includes a description, taken from a Spanish manuscript, of the west coast of America from Tierra del Fuego to California. A rush to issue an account of this voyage developed between the publishers of this narrative and that of Woodes Rogers. The first volume above is distinguished from the second edition by not having a volume number on the titlepage and having the text that was later duplicated in the second volume. An important buccaneering and Pacific voyage. HILL 372. HOWES C733, "b." SABIN 16303. NMM 1:99. WAGNER SPANISH SOUTHWEST 77. STREETER SALE 2427.
