DEFOE, Daniel.]
London: Printed for J. Baker, 1712. Octavo (180 x 120 mm). Early 20th-century brown quarter calf, spine lettered in gilt, brown pebble-grain cloth sides, earlier red speckled edges. Binding rubbed but sound, contents a little browned, cut close at head but never impinging on type. A very good copy. Complete with the half-title. First edition of Defoe's tract on the newly-formed South Sea Company. Under the scheme, the British government transferred its debt to the Company, which was then given a monopoly of trade with South America. Defoe had supported a similar project in letters to Robert Harley, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, and he is on the whole supportive of the South Sea Company, although he raises many concerns with the project, not least over misguided speculators rushing in without knowledge - "Brewers, Bakers, Coopers, and the like, and an infinite Number of these; talk to these of a South Sea Trade is to talk Hebrew and Arabic: Like Esop's Cock, they spurn the Diamond with Contempt and will sell Two of them for an Handful of Barley" (p. 34). Nonetheless, Defoe's support for the Company intensified, and he continued to defend the Company even after the crash, continuing to blame the speculators, whom he mercilessly derided. Defoe sold his own stock in the company in 1719 before the bubble burst, although he missed out on the sky-high prices of the next year. Despite the imprint date, the pamphlet was in fact published 13 September 1711, with a second edition published on 30 October 1711. The tract is well-represented institutionally, but rare in commerce, last … [Click Below for Full Description]

MOIVRE, Abraham de.
London: Printed for H. Clements, W. Innys and D. Brown, 1712. London: Printed for H. Clements, W. Innys and D. Brown,, 1712.. Quarto (203 x 158), pages 213-264. Disbound, red edges. Paper lightly browned, occasional light spotting; a very good copy. First edition of de Moivre's first paper on probability, a 52-page memoir in Latin contributed to the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. "Nearly all of De Mensura Sortis was later incorporated into de Moivre's book The Doctrine of Chances (1718, 1738, 1756), which was the most important textbook on probability theory until the publication of Laplace's Théorie Analytqiue des Probabilités (1812). In the preface de Moivre states that he began his work on probability theory at the exhortation of Francis Robartes, who asked him to solve the division problem for two gamesters playing bowls and also to find the probability of getting certain given faces as the outcome of a given number of throws with a die. He also states that had previously read the books by Huygens and Montmort 'but these distinguished gentlemen do not seem to have employed that simplicity and generality which the nature of the matter demands.' Furthermore he writes that 'while they suppose that the skill of the gamesters is always equal, they confine this doctrine of games within limits too narrow.' Finally his remarks about Montmort may be read as if Montmort had used only the method of Huygens on some new examples. These rash remarks naturally provoked a dispute with Montmort." (A. in Verlegung Jeremiae Wolffen, 1712. Mit Gestochenem Frontispiz, Titel, 2 Seiten Vorrede, 424 Seiten mit 83 Kupferstichen (Emblemen) im Text, 4 Seiten Register. Erste deutsche Ausgabe, vorher waren bereits mehrere lateinische Ausgaben erschienen. - 010

This is the third volume, devoted to Asia; textually it is complete in itself, assembled from 15 parts. The maps include separate delineations of Arabia, Persia (both classical and modern), China, the East Indies and Japan.
L'opera conta 62 carte geografiche incise in rame. [Click Below for Full Description]

Cruquius, Nicolaes
Kruikius (Cruquius)? uitgegeven in 1712. [Click Below for Full Description]

His political prowess and enlightened attitudes toward religion, learning, and the humanities earned him the sobriquet "Frederick the Great". Autographed note signed "Federic". 1p. (double-page), 7.25 x 9.0 inch, n.p., n.d. Letter of Henry IX. Reuss, Count of Köstritz addressed to the King. A letter written by the Count of Köstritz regarding the purchase of two pictures, where the dealers had pushed the prices higher and higher and Count Reuss had offered not only 6000. (écûs), but also "Cent Louis" for each related frame. At the end of the letter the King added a fine four-line autographed note signed in French, in full: "je n ai pas bessoin des Cadres j en ai de reste, je ne pourai finir cette affaire qu a mon retour de Silesie / Federic". Mailing folds, slightly discolored, else fine condition. Letters in French usually signed as "Federic" and not "Frederic", referring to some biographies the King had the opinion that "Federic" sounds better. Giovanni Battista da Cassine
L'opera conta 62 carte geografiche incise in rame. Incisione in rame, in ottimo stat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bible. Latin & German. Selections. 1712.
1712. Representing => all-in commitment to fully graphic embodiment of The Word, this => entirely engraved pictorial Bible by Christoph Weigel depicts hundreds of famous stories and incidents central or dear to the Christian faithful, from the temptation of Adam and Eve, to David slaying Goliath; to scenes of Christ's teaching and emblems of His parables; to portrayals of His agony and taking in the garden, and His trial and crucifixion, and more. (At the end are some notably striking visions of, and from, Revelation.) Below each spacious image is its chapter source and a => brief didactic poem printed in both Latin and German. Faber du Faur notes the large illustrations were designed by Jan Luyken, Casper Luyken, F.A. Meloni, and anonymous contributors before being engraved by Weigel. Brunet gives the plate count for the 1712 edition as 261, but there are no Worldcat records with that number of plates, all records showing either 258 or 260, the latter apparently when the cataloguer has counted the engraved title and half-title as engravings. In this copy, the Iast plate (#151) of the O.T. containing an image from ch. 9 of the second book of Maccabees is not present. In total, this folio volume contains two engraved title-pages and 258 full-page engraved illustrations -- 150 from the O.T. and 108 from the N.T. -- all extremely well done, as is all calligraphy. => This is not what one typically thinks of, as an "illustrated Bible"; that is, it is not "embellished text" -- it represents, rather, the Bible IN pictures.
