(...) ad usum suae scholae. Tarbiae, Apud Matthaeum Roquemaurel, Typog. & Bibliop.

Ludewig, Georg, Herzog zu Braunschweig und Lüneburg [George I of Great Britain]
Hanover, Germany, 1712. Unique. Pamphlet. Very Good. [Hanover] January 16, 1712. Single folio broadside (320 mm x 205 mm). Printed on one single sheet, recto and verso watermarked pages, handsome heading and ornamented versals in common blackletter Fraktur typeface on common rag [could be flax] deckle-edge paper. Legible date of decree. Evidence of two early folds, likely folded into fourths and page four [verso] is lightly stained [with coffee, tea?]. Untrimmed and printed for travel and distribution, however, in exceedingly good condition. Highly curious and politically motivated legal edict, produced in Hanover [Holy Roman Empire], regulating prices of various forms of execution, and also the regulations for the salaries that may be charged by hangmen. On behalf of Duke Georg Ludewig of Braunschweig und Lüneburg, the present edict sought to control "excessive" execution fees. Georg Ludewig, the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg (Hanover), was also known as George I, King of Great Britain and Ireland, beginning two years later in 1714. This edict, interestingly enough, was issued during the War of the Spanish Succession in Europe. The Duke is basically calling out the local states within the region for delinquency and organizing of unauthorized fees for executions. Once regulations and set fees were established, with different fees for different methods, including strangulation (1 Thaler 24 Marien Groschen), decapitation (ditto), hanging, etc. The edict states there should be a limited payment for assistants, nails, chains, but not for tools - unless said t … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Garcilaso de la Vega, "El Inca"]
Paris: Geofroi Nyon, 1712. [18],281,[3],249,[11]pp. Second part with separate titlepage. 12mo. Contemporary calf, ornate gilt spine, raised bands, gilt maroon morocco label. Crossed-out contemporary ownership signature on titlepage and verso of front free endpaper, old institutional stamp also on titlepage. Later manuscript note tipped in at front. Overall internally clean. Very good. Later French edition, after the Lisbon first of 1605 and the first French of 1670, of Garcilaso de la Vega's great work on De Soto and the aborigines of Florida. The author, the extraordinary half-Incan historian, obtained a great portion of the material contained in this work directly from a member of De Soto's ill-fated expedition, as well as from two manuscripts of unquestioned authority written by two other members of the expedition. Although for a period of the 19th century Garcilaso de la Vega's three great works on the conquests of Peru and Florida were subject to skepticism on the part of some historians, time and further scholarship have established their authenticity, and this publication is now regarded as one of the primary works on the events with which it deals. The text concerns De Soto's forays into Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and even as far west as Arkansas. See Field for a good discussion of Garcilaso de la Vega's life and works. One of the primary early American histories. PALAU 354839. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 711/83. SABIN 98748. SERVIES 264 (another ed). FIELD 587 (another ed). CLARK I:8 (ref).

Cooke, Capt. Edward
London: printed by H.M. for B. Lintot and R. Gosling in Fleet-Street, A. Bettesworth on London-Bridge, and W. Innys in St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1712. First edition. 20 cm. [23], errata, 456, [10] index, [2] ads. With folding frontis. map depicting California as an island, plus 19 other maps and plates. Bound in full blind-stamped paneled calf. Joints very worn, but holding, leather scuffed, spine cracked and worn at ends, spine label lacking. Some darkening to text block, maps and plates are clean and very good. Housed in a custom blue cloth chemise and slipcase with a gilt stamped black morocco label. On Captain Woodes Rogers' privateering expedition around the world with two ships, the "Duke" and the "Duchess," Cooke was second Captain of the "Duchess." The account he records of Selkirk's adventure is said to have been the inspiration for Daniel Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe." Streeter 2427: "This volume was issued separately, with no indication -- as in the second edition-- that it was Vol 1 of an issue of two volumes, but both Sabin and Wagner incorrectly enter it as Vol. 1 of a two-volume edition. The main pagination of Vol 1 of the two-volume edition is 432pp., instead of 456pp. as here." Howes concurs, stating that this single volume edition was "issued hurriedly... with the voyage home compressed into the final chapter, in order to be on the market before the appearance of a rival publisher's account of the same voyage by Woodes Rogers." HOWES C733 SABIN 16303 [for the 2 vol. ed.] WAGNER, Spanish Southwest 77 STREETER 2427.

Commentarius in quinquaginta libros Pandectarum - Mevius, David und Johann Jacob von Ryssel (Ed.)
Francofurti ad Moenum, Officina Zunneriana [Frankfurt/Main: Zunner], 1712. Vorsatz, Titel in schwarz-rotem Druck mit Kupfervignette, (166), 658, 512, (110) Seiten. 2° (35 x 25 cm). [Click Below for Full Description]

[?Swift, Jonathan]
[?London]: [s.n.], 1712. First edition. 14, [1, ad], [1] pp., half-title with "Pence" correctly spelled. 8vo. "Swift's mock Letter of Thanks was prompted by the Preface attached by the Bishop of St Asaph (William Fleetwood, 1656-1723) to his publication in 1712 of Four Sermons delivered between 1692 and 1702. This Preface contained a direct attack on Harley's administration. The Tories carried a motion in the House of Commons condemning it, and it was publicly burned on 12 May 1712" (Rothschild). "A Letter" is generally attributed to Swift, though that attribution is strongly challenged by David Wolley in "The Canon of Swift's Pamphleteering, 1710-1714" (Swift Studies, vol. 3, 1988, pp. 105-6). The advertisement for "The Speech of John Ketch Esq; at the Burning of a late Scandalous and Malicious Preface" refers to a printing of a speech by the pseudonymous John Ketch on the burning of Fleetwood's Four Sermons; the printer of both works is unknown. ESTC N10918; Rothschild 2042; Teerink 585A. Provenance: Temple Scott (bookplate); Gerald E. Slater (his sale, Christie's New York, 12 February 1982, lot 179); Louise and Ann Marie Davidson (bookplate). Nineteenth-century red pebbled morocco and marbled boards, by Boston Bookbinding. Covers rubbed and stained, half-title browned, some spotting and title and other leaves.

SANCHEZ THOMAS
Venetiis, typographia Stephani Montii 1712 - Tre parti in due volumi di cm. 32, pp. (48) 507 (1); (48) 360; 372. Primo frontespizio in rosso e nero, vignette ai frontespizi, alcune graziose testatine xil. Ottima legatura coeva in piena perg. rigida; dorso a 5 nervi con titoli ms. Sporadiche macchiette. Esemplare ben conservato Thomas Sanchez (1550-1610), gesuita spagnolo, fu giureconsulto di enorme fama; quest'opera fu messa all'indice nel 1627 soprattutto a causa della disputatio De debito coniugali (cfr. tom. III, p. 154 e ss.).
Cm. 17, pp. xx (4) 280. Bellissima antiporta allegorica incisa in rame e alcune graziose testatine xilografiche. Cfr. Kvk. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
