Rousseau, Jean Jacques.
Two Volumes (complete set). 15 cm x 24 cm. Volume I: XIX, 281 pages / Volume II: XV, 414 pages. Original Hardcover. Excellent condition with only very minor signs of external wear. Wonderful condition and suitable as gift ! Widely regarded as the first modern autobiography, The Confessions is an astonishing work of acute psychological insight. Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-78) argued passionately against the inequality he believed to be intrinsic to civilized society. In his Confessions he relives the first fifty-three years of his radical life with vivid immediacy - from his earliest years, where we can see the source of his belief in the innocence of childhood, through the development of his philosophical and political ideas, his struggle against the French authorities and exile from France following the publication of Emile. Depicting a life of adventure, persecution, paranoia, and brilliant achievement, The Confessions is a landmark work by one of the greatest thinkers of the Enlightenment, which was a direct influence upon the work of Proust, Goethe and Tolstoy among others. Swift, Jonathan
London: Benj. Tooke, 1712. First edition. Hardcover. Modern full brown leather, front cover lettered in gilt. Near fine. 48 pages [*4,B-F4]. Swift wanted the language to be controlled by a select group of grammarians - and thus to achieve fixity. This would have the important consequence that older books in the language would always remain intelligible. "I would have our language, after it is duly correct, always to last; I do not mean that it should never be enlarged: Provided that no Word which a Society shall give a sanction to, be afterwards antiquated and exploded, they may have liberty to receive whatever new ones they shall find occasion for: Because then the old Books will be always valuable, according to their intrinsick Worth, and not thrown aside on account of unintelligible Words and Phrases.'' This was one of very few publications to which Swift attached his name. With half title, modest toning, F4 with slight .75 cm. margin dampstain, and loss of numeral 4 of page number 48, but no text loss. Endpapers renewed.

*** [English translation available upon request. "Overshadowed by his father, who as chief baron of the exchequer was speaker of the House of Lords between 1689 and 1693, and with whom he had political disagreements, Atkyns refused to take the oath of allegiance to William III and chose to retire to Pinbury Park, where he had the opportunity to explore his topographical interests. The first of the three major Gloucestershire antiquaries—the other two being Ralph Bigland (1712–1784) and Samuel Rudder (1726–1801)—Atkyns collected material for parish histories, incorporating manuscripts on church history passed to him by Richard Parsons (1643–1711), chancellor of Gloucester diocese between 1677 and 1711. He compiled comprehensive manorial descents and attempted to record the population of each parish, based on the numbers of houses therein and the yearly birth … [Click Below for Full Description]

Witsii, Hermanni (Hermann Witsius)
Herbornae Nassaviorum (Herborn, Germany): Iohannis Nicolai Andreae, 1712. Fourth edition. Hardcover. f to g+. Octavo (8 3/4 x 7"). Originally published in 1681, this work is the fourth edition of Hermann Witsius' "Exercitationes sacræ in symbolum quod Apostolorum dicitur et in Orationem Dominicam" (Sacred dissertations on the Apostles' Creed and in the Lord's Prayer). In "Sacred dissertations on the Apostles' Creed," Witsius "seeks to expound the truth of Scripture and apply it to life in a way that simultaneously expresses the spirit of Scripture. The work begins with a series of introductory studies which discuss such questions as the title of the Creed (Witsius recognizes that "Apostles" should be taken to refer to the apostolicity of the doctrine, not of the authors), the role of fundamental articles, and the nature of saving faith. Thereafter follows his phrase-by-phrase exposition of the substance of the Creed" (For more information see Sinclair B. Ferguson's Foreword of Hermann Witsius' "Sacred dissertations on the Apostles' Creed" (2010), by RHB). In "Sacred dissertations on the Lord's Prayer," Witsius explores the significance and usage of the Lord's Prayer. He examines the definition and history of prayer throughout the Old Testament and then moves on to the practical and spiritual advantages of prayer, as wel … [Click Below for Full Description]

(...) ad usum suae scholae. Tarbiae, Apud Matthaeum Roquemaurel, Typog. & Bibliop.

Ludewig, Georg, Herzog zu Braunschweig und Lüneburg [George I of Great Britain]
Hanover, Germany, 1712. Unique. Pamphlet. Very Good. [Hanover] January 16, 1712. Single folio broadside (320 mm x 205 mm). Printed on one single sheet, recto and verso watermarked pages, handsome heading and ornamented versals in common blackletter Fraktur typeface on common rag [could be flax] deckle-edge paper. Legible date of decree. Evidence of two early folds, likely folded into fourths and page four [verso] is lightly stained [with coffee, tea?]. Untrimmed and printed for travel and distribution, however, in exceedingly good condition. Highly curious and politically motivated legal edict, produced in Hanover [Holy Roman Empire], regulating prices of various forms of execution, and also the regulations for the salaries that may be charged by hangmen. On behalf of Duke Georg Ludewig of Braunschweig und Lüneburg, the present edict sought to control "excessive" execution fees. Georg Ludewig, the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg (Hanover), was also known as George I, King of Great Britain and Ireland, beginning two years later in 1714. This edict, interestingly enough, was issued during the War of the Spanish Succession in Europe. The Duke is basically calling out the local states within the region for delinquency and organizing of unauthorized fees for executions. Once regulations and set fees were established, with different fees for different methods, including strangulation (1 Thaler 24 Marien Groschen), decapitation (ditto), hanging, etc. The edict states there should be a limited payment for assistants, nails, chains, but not for tools - unless said t … [Click Below for Full Description]
