Rara. HOMANN, Johann Baptist
Nuremburg: Homann, Johann Baptist. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 19" x 22.75". Page size 21.5" x 25" Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 19" x 22.75". Page size 21.5" x 25". This elaborate plan of St. Petersburg describes the new capital literally, allegorically, and contextually. Published only a few years after the capital was declared in 1712, the map's primary feature is a plan of the city that demonstrates the lofty plans of Peter the Great to transform its geography. In addition to the present layout of the capital, it also shows the grid of canals intended for Vasiliesvsky Island. In pursing this design by an Italian architect, Peter I hoped to mold St. Petersburg in the image of established European cities such as Venice. His hope of re-locating the city center to this island was never realized, as it proved too prone to flooding, but the area today still bears the general structure set out by the canal plan. Above the plan, a map situates St. Petersburg in the mouth of the River Neva in relation to important surrounding forts, and on the right, a vignette shows the fort at Kronstadt. Most impressive, however, is the title cartouche in the upper right corner, in which a framed portrait of Peter I presides over a grouping of allegorical figures of the arts and sciences. The cartouche's references to the arts and sciences including geography, ship-building, and medicine give further credence to Peter I's desire to establish a capital on par with the greatest of European examples. The map is in excellent condition with no chip … [Click Below for Full Description]

Esemplare ben conservato Thomas Sanchez (1550-1610), gesuita spagnolo, fu giureconsulto di enorme fama; quest'opera fu messa all'indice nel 1627 soprattutto a causa della disputatio De debito coniugali (cfr. tom. III, p. 154 e ss.). Bragge, Francis]:
London: Printed for E. Curll., 1712. [4],36pp. Dbd. Trimmed close, especially along the bottom edge, costing most of one or two lines per page. Good. The first edition of the first work in a pamphlet war that resulted from the last witch trial in England. Wenham was condemned to death but was later pardoned. This was the first work relating to the Wenham case, produced just after her trial by Rev. Francis Bragge, her chief prosecutor. Here, Bragge recounts the charges against Wenham and provides a strong argument for her guilt. Despite Bragge's efforts, at least two pamphlets were produced in defense of Wenham, and Bragge wrote another screed against her later the same year. An interesting moment in English witchcraft history. ESTC T71994. [Attributes: First Edition]

Cfr. Kvk..

FLAMSTEED, John.
London: John Matthews, 1712. First edition. The true first edition, extremely rare, of Flamsteed's catalogue of fixed stars and sextant observations, the foundation of modern observational astronomy. Flamsteed's catalogue was far more extensive and accurate than anything that had gone before. It was the first constructed with instruments using telescopic sights and micrometer eyepieces; Flamsteed was the first to study systematic errors in his instruments; he was the first to urge the fundamental importance of using clocks and taking meridian altitudes; and he insisted on having assistants to repeat the observations and the calculations. The catalogue contains about 3000 naked eye stars (Ptolemy and Tycho listed 1000, Hevelius 2000) with an accuracy of about 10 seconds of arc. However, Flamsteed, although appointed Astronomer Royal in 1675, by the turn of the eighteenth century had still not published any of his observations. Isaac Newton and Edmond Halley pressed him to do so; Flamsteed's refusal led to one of the most famous, and bitterest, disputes in the history of astronomy, and to the present work being published against Flamsteed's will. Flamsteed's response, in 1716, was to destroy 300 of the 400 copies printed, so just a few years after publication no more than 100 copies survived. Flamsteed published his own, 'authorised', version of his star catalogue in 1725. ABPC/RBH list three copies: 1.

Among the most curious entries in the volume are descriptions of and plates depicting the anatomical theater at the Academy of Sciences, the AcademyÕs anatomical collection, and the siege of Leyden. . Roma, Gio. Francesco Chracas, 1712. Saverio Franchi in "Impressioni sceniche - vol. II, pag.
