London, 1712. Modern half calf over marbled boards, spine gilt. Titlepage lightly soiled, small worm hole through entire text affecting a few letters, otherwise internally clean. A very good copy. A pamphlet highly critical of offers made by French representatives at the time that the Treaty of Utrecht was being negotiated. The Treaty of Utrecht, signed in 1713, ended the War of the Spanish Succession (also known as Queen Anne's War). In early 1712 the French and British were negotiating bilaterally, each making demands on the other for concessions, including those regarding territory in North America. This tract, intensely critical of the entire proposed treaty, includes critiques of the third and fifth articles which relate to American territories, including Hudson Bay, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. The author's dissatisfaction with the proposed treaty is expressed in the first paragraph: "If I may judg[e] by myself, 'tis impossible to express the surprize, indignation, and concern, which the offers of France for a general peace must have rais'd in the breast of every true Englishman. Is this the good peace we have been made to expect? Are these the fruits of a successful war? Is this the provision made for the safety of our allies?...This the security for Great Britain? Is this reducing the exorbitant power of France, and preserving the liberty of Europe?

The Theory and Practice of Gardening: Wherein is fully handled all that relates to Fine Gardens, commonly called Pleasure-Gardens, as Parterres, Groves, Bowling-Greens, &c. Containing divers Plans, and general Dispositions of Gardens. With the manner of laying out the Grounds, cutting the Terrasses. the method of Planting, and raising, in little time, all the Plants requisite in Fine Gardens. Done from the French Original, printed at Paris, Anno 1709. By John James of Greenwich.

      - London, Printed by Geo. James, 1712. 4to (252 x 200mm). pp.(16), 218, (2), with 32 double- or folded plates. Contemporary calf, richly gilt spine in 6 compartments with red gilt lettered label, sides with gilt borderlines with coronet corner-pieces (old repair to hinges). Rare first English edition of Dezallier d'Argenville's 'La théorie et la pratique du jardinage', which was published anonymously in 1709 like the present first English edition. The most important work on garden design in the eighteenth century, with plates after designs by Alexandre Le Blond. The work popularized the manner of Le Nôtre and his school in the laying out of ornamental gardens: parterres, bosquets, fountains, basins, and cascades. André Le Nôtre (1613-1700) designed or redesigned the gardens of Versailles, the Tuileries and Fontainebleau. The book ran to 11 editions, in three languages. "The English version of d'Argenville's work first appeared in London in 1712. The translator was the noted London architect John James. It is well produced on good quality paper and profusely illustrated, the plates being the same as those in the original French work, but re-engraved by Michael van der Gucht. 'The theory and practice of gardening' deals fully with the design and formation of fine gardens, commonly called pleasure-gardens. [and] must have been the inspiration of many formal gardens designed in England during the early part of the eighteenth century."(Henry II, p. 493-495). Gabriele Doppelmajero Mathem. Prof. Publ. operâ Ioh. Baptistae Homanni Cum Privilegio (Norimbergae.) Sac. Caes. Majestatis':.

      - Altkolorierter Kupferstich v. Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr (Doppelmayer) aus Atlas Coelestis b. Johann Baptist Homann in Nürnberg, dat. 1712 und 1713 ersch. 1742, 48 x 58 Diefenbacher - Heinz - Bach-Damaskinos, Der Verlag Homann in Nürnberg 1702-1848, S. 132. - J.G. This whimsical celestial chart illustrates Tycho Brahe's cosmological system describing the complex movements of Venus and Mercury as viewed from earth. - The center of the chart is filled with a delightful scene of cherubs swinging through the clouds. - Two text panels at lower corners describe the movements of the planets. - The backside with 2 stamps from the previous owner.

Lisbon, Na Officina Real Deslandesiana, 1712. - Woodcut vignette on title page. Woodcut tailpiece. Woodcut and typographical headpieces. Woodcut initial. (6 ll.), 157 pp. 8?, contemporary red calf, elaborately gilt with central diamond-and-fan design at corners, flat spine richly gilt (joints and hinges going, some rubbing and darkening). Last quire has heavy dampstains, not affecting legibility. Overall in good condition. Elegantly penned ink inscription on front flyleaf: "Mlle. Arcangela Engracia em 20 de Maio 1812." Early monogram stamp in blank area of title page ("FMP"). ---- First Edition in Portuguese? We have seen references to editions of Brussels, 1717, and Lisbon, 1721, 1732, 1737, 1758, and 1815. However, the licenses date to 1699, and since this seems to have been the sort of book that was read to pieces, possibly earlier editions in Portuguese will eventually surface.Genevieve of Brabant is a heroine of medieval legend: a chaste wife repudiated by her husband the Count Palatine Siegfried of Treves. She lived with her son in a cave for six years, until accidentally found by her husband, who had meanwhile discovered that the accusation of adultery was false and was eager to restore her to her rightful position. The story first became popular in Ceriziers' @L'Innocence reconnue, ou vie de Sainte Genevieve de Brabant, 1638, of which this is a translation. Genevieve's story remained a common subject for German dramas into the nineteenth century and even later: Puccini's @Suor Angelica is said to be based on it. Several features seem to be unique to the Portuguese text. The preliminary leaves include a 5-page @prologo in which Fr. Manoel de Coimbra discusses the sources for the Genevieve story (one of the licenses elaborates these even further) and there is an unsigned sonnet in Spanish "De hum amigo ao Author." The final page offers an acrostic poem on "Genoveva."RenÈ de Ceriziers (1603-Paris, 1662) entered the Society of Jesus in 1622, teaching literature and philosophy at various Jesuit colleges. He left the Order in 1641 to take a position as chaplain to the Duke of OrlÈans, and then to Louis XIV. Kenny notes, "He was a clerical courtier: his was a worldly and powerful milieu, not an ascetic one. Writing from the 1630s onwards, he became well-known as a prolific and successful author of vernacular histories (secular and ecclesiastical) and fictions and as a translator of St Augustine. Accomodating secular to religious culture, he was adept at moulding church history to the narrative genres which sold well at the time, the romance and novella: his life of St Genevieve was a much translated bestseller which was still read in the nineteenth century." Among his other notable works are @Heureux Commencements de la France chrÈtienne sous l'apÙtre de nos rois saint RÈmy, 1633, and @RÈflexions chrÈtiennes et politiques sur la vie des rois de France, 1633.This version was translated from German to Spanish by JosÈ Ximenes de Castillo, and from Spanish to Portuguese by Padre Manoel de Coimbra, a native of the Villa de ?bidos who served at the Igreja da Magdalena in Lisbon. Barbosa Machado notes that P. Manoel spent most of his life translating spiritually uplifting works from other languages. He died at age 80 in Lisbon.---- Barbosa Machado III, 223-4: citing only this 1712 edition. Qualche gora chiara. Cartonato d'attesa coevo. ?Giuseppe Antonio Alberti nacque a Bologna il 29 genn. 1712. (DBI).       London: printed for John Morphew, near Stationer's-Hall, 1712. Second edition. 47, [1, ads] pp. 1 vols. Uncut in modern boards. Dated by the first purchaser at the foot of p. [3] "Aprl. 16, 1712", the date of publication (see Bower & Erickson). This is the third of Arbuthnot's series, in Bower & Erickson's permutation (b), i.e., with p. 25 in the corrected state and p. 27 uncorrected. Obviously if this copy was bought on the day the pamphlet was published, there is unlikely to be any important difference between the sequence in which the various states were issued. The reference to Mary Manley's New Atlantis was plainly intended to disguise Arbuthnot's authorship.

Halle im Magdeburgischen: Zu finden in der Rengerischen Buchhandlung, Halle im Magdeburgischen, 1712. FIRST EDITION. 4to. Unbound pamphlet: [2], 52, [4] pp. Horizontal worm hole (1/4 to 1/2 inch) in outer margins of a number of leaves with loss, otherwise in very good condition. Preserved in a black cloth protective case (Cloverleaf Studio) FIRST EDITION of this important treatise on the legal problems of the Inquisition against Witches. The author, German jurist and philosopher Christian Thomasius (1655-1728), was one of the most respected and influential university teachers of his day, and was instrumental in popularizing the Enlightenment in Germany. * Thomasius' "Historical Investigation into the Origins and Continuation of the inquisitorial Trials against Witches," published here for the first time, provides a detailed and highly critical consideration of the subject. His arguments are supported by numerous texts, including Scripture, Roman Law, Canon Law, and even the 'Malleus Maleficarum' itself. * Along with Leipniz, "Thomasius was in part a polyhistorian: he was jurist, philosopher, theologian, literary critic and man of letters, and above all the first economist produced by Germany. He remained a university man, whereas Leipniz forsook the universities and sought spiritual refuge with the academies which he founded. ... He was one of the first typical 'progressives' to advocate reforms and fight prejudices. Wherever it was necessary to air a problem, to clarify it, to make it understandable, he took his stand in the front row. ... he was an unswerving advocate of pure thought, of perception of objective reality, and he sharply attacked antiquated conceptions, especially in jurisprudence, pedagogy, and theology. ... He fought untiringly against the belief in witches and sorcery, and here, as elsewhere, he endeavored to eradicate ghosts, to shake the belief in authority sanctified by age, and to replace doctrine with observation. thus, his most effective argument against the persecution of witches was based on a legal ground: only corporeal beings can make pacts, and since devils are ghosts pacts with them are legally void." * Edward J. Maggio relates that "By the beginning of the eighteenth century, the influence of the Malleus [Maleficarum] was still felt, and the criticism of witch-hunting in certain communities could bring disaster to a theological or legal scholar who dared to challenge the prevailing views of the day. CHRISTIAN THOMASIUS was one such scholar. As the first head of the University of Halle in Brandenburg, Prussia, his insistence on religious toleration, criticism of judicial torture, and denial of the crime of witchcraft drew down on him the opposition of both theologians and other jurists while making him a prominent and controversial jurist. From his winter lecture notes of 1702, it becomes clear why he drew so much criticism from the authorities of the time: 'But I deny most firmly and cannot believe that the devil has horns, claws, or talons, or that he appears as a Pharisee, or a monk, or a monster as men depict him. [...] I also cannot believe that the devil can enter into agreements with humans, cause them to give him written documents [that is, pacts] sleep [that is, have sexual intercourse] with them, or that he bears them off to the Blocksberg [sabbat] on a broom or a goat, and so forth. [... ] I hold that since the procedure of the witch trials is inadequate, because jurists have made the pact with the devil the basis of the charge, a thing which is not possible in nature, that one has to proceed cautiously if people are to be convicted of having injured others through witchcraft. There must be many proofs, and the rules of evidence indicated in the Code of Criminal Law are not correct, as has been shown in my disputation.' (SOURCE: Edward J.
