Aefferden, Francisco De
Antwerp: Francisco Laso, 1711 Fourth edition of this very rare pocket atlas which describes the world at the end of the 17th century. 16mo. 5¾x3¾ inches. 7 leaves, 280pp. plus 41 (of 43) folding black & white maps (1 hand-colored). One large historiated initial. Title page printed in red and black. Text in Spanish. Contemporary full calf, spine gilt extra. Spine quite worn with gilt quite rubbed, front inner hinge cracked, cords holding firm; a few maps with splits at folds, one map damaged at lower edge. A very good copy. The work was published in the former Spanish Netherland. The text is interspersed with lovely miniature maps. One of the missing maps is Mapa general de la Tierra, often lacking from known editions of this atlas. Also lacking is the map of the celestial globe. The last map, damaged at the lower edge, shows California as an island. Francisco de Aefferden (1653-1709) was a Belgian cartographer based in Antwerp; Francisco Laso was a book merchant..

COUAGNE, Jean-Baptiste de (1687-1740).
Canada: 1711 Location: 165B. THE FIRST MAP OF CANADA MADE BY A CANADIAN, PRODUCED IN THE NEW WORLD. ONE OF ONLY FOUR KNOWN MAPS BY COUAGNE AND ONLY ONE IN NORTH AMERICA, THE REST HELD BY FRENCH LIBRARIES. Single sheet (paper size: 19 x 27-1/2 inches; framed size: 30-1/4 x 39 inches). EXCEPTIONALLY FINE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT MAP OF "NOUVELLE FRANCE", in pen and ink with green color wash (central vertical crease). PROVENANCE: "Carte sous la Compagnie des Indes, du La Champlain et de Chouaquin" in manuscript on verso, stamp of the Dépôt de la Marine, Paris, late 1711-early 1712. This unique and exquisitely rendered, large-scale original manuscript map, showing Northeastern America (the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence River and Nova Scotia) is one of only four known examples by Couagne and the only one still in private hands; the three others are held by the Bibliotheque Nationale de France (two) and the Bibliotheque du Service Historique de la Marine (one). Jean-Baptiste de Couagne was the first cartographer born in North America. A relatively low-ranking individual in the colonial regular force, he becoming a lieutenant in 1719 and a half-pay captain in 1732, the rank he held until the day he died. We are certain this was produced in mainland Canada because Couagne's movements are well documented, and we know he never left New France. F. J. Thorpe notes that Couagne "combined diligence with integrity, retaining a sense of objectivity in the midst of those personal and procedural wrangles which marked the tenure of Verville. The usefulness and devotion to service of Couagne were m … [Click Below for Full Description]

MARSIGLI, Luigi Ferdinando (1658-1730). -
Venezia, Poletti, 1711. 4to. Contemp. half vellum, label on spine; slightly worn. With 3 hand-coloured engr. plates. (4), 72, (4) pp.; some scattered light soiling but generally a good large copy. First edition of the first modern work on oceanography. In the introductury letter Marsigli writes that already in 1710 he had sent a manuscript of the extended version to the French Royal Academy. But as printing was impeded by adverse conditions, he decided to publish this Brieve Ristretto which, however, contains the essential lines of the complete text, printed in Amsterdam in 1725: della struttura del mare; della natura dell'acqua marina; del moto dell'acqua; della vegetazione delle piante dentro del mare; degli animali dentro del mare. Marsigli may be considered «the precursor of the systematic oceanographic exploration that was to begin half a century later with the famous voyage of the Endeavour» (DSB IX, p.135). The second part (pp. 53-72), addressed to Vallisnieri, is devoted to kermes, the most ancient dyestuff on record. Ward and Carozzi 1503. Nissen ZBI 2700. Ron, Bibliotheca Tinctoria, 714. Prima edizione della prima opera moderna di oceanografia. Con 3 tavv. f.t. inc. in rame e colorate a mano. [10, including engraved title], 404, [2] pp. 8vo. Contemporary stiff vellum (Dutch binding), sprinkled edges. Landwehr, Low Countries, 509; Landwehr, Emblem Books in the Low Countries 1554-1949, 398; Heckscher & Sherman, Emblem Books in the Princeton University Library, 501; not in Praz. A very fine copy of the first edition of this charming Dutch emblem book, printed on thick paper, with clear impressions of the etchings, with ample margins, in a remarkable fresh condition. The book depicts genre scenes, depictions of trades, and convivial scenes in settings of landscapes, villages and cities. The subject of the book is the inner experience of all around us. Both text and illustrations show Luyken's great skills as both a poet and a book illustrator.Jan Luyken (or Luiken) was a Dutch poet, illustrator and engraver. He has been described as the most fertile and versatile etcher of the Dutch school, and the most important copper-engraver (with Romeyn de Hooghe and Gerard de Lairesse), of the period after Rembrandt. "How much depth of atmosphere in Luyken's copperplates!" (Praz). Praz also noted that Luyken's work is "poorly and rather inadequately represented in the large collections of emblems whose catalogues we have used ...." - Ex-Libris B.R. van Schaik on front paste-down. A very nice and fresh copy.

[MANLEY, Mary De La Riviere. (1663-1724)]
London: John Morphew, 1711. Second edition, corrected of vol. 1, First edition of vol. 2. 8vo, pp. xx, 334; xvo, 336. Some light marginal staining, some light foxing, and marginal staining, a very good set. With the ownership signature of "C. A. Anacker" on the corner of the title page. Bound in contemporary speckled brown calf, spine gilt with raised bands. Includes the advertising leaf by the publisher and "A Key to the Third Volume of the ATLANTIS, call'd, Memoirs of Europe." Includes some contemporary annotations, presumably by Anacker." The dedication is to Isaac Bickerstaff and contains caustic letters between Richard Steele and Mrs. Manley. Halkett and Laing Vol IV, page 50. The Schlueters note in their Encyclopaedia of British Women Writers that this is Manley's most celebrated work, ... a kind of roman a clef that recounted political intrigue and sexual scandal ... includes scenes of homosexual, as well as heterosexual sex, orgies, drunkeness, rape and incest, which has given it a sensationalist reputation ... The second volume, for example, opens with a piece on the New Cabal, a group of wealthy lesbians ... Her contribution lies in having forged an authentically feminist realism ... and in having braved the negative currents that opposed women's entrance into the field of dramatic and fictional literature ... She is one of the pioneers of women's literature in English, but her work has yet to receive the serious critical attention it deserves.

Robert Monteith, Robert Sibbald
Printed by Mr Andrew Symson; published by SRS MD, Edinburgh, 1711. An extremely rare 1st edition copy with contemporary maps of Orkney and Shetland. The work is in 2 parts: the first being a description of Orkney 'From the MS of Robert Monteith Laird of Eglisha & Gairsa, dated Kirkwall Sept 24 1633'; and the second being a description of the Isles of Shetland. It is assumed that Robert Monteith authored both, with Sir Robert Sibbald subsequently collating and publishing the manuscript, adding the 2 maps. The first section is relatively brief while the second section includes much more detail on livestock, plants, farming, fishing and general ways of life. There are also references in the text dated 1652 and 1669, which suggest that Sibbald added his own words to a greater or lesser extent. This volume is in a newer half leather binding with leather title and date labels to spine and front board. There is some scuffing to the surface of the corners and the boards. It is clean and sound. Internally there is the bookplate of John Davie Manson Robertson, a noted Orcadian, to front and rear pastedowns. Contents: title page dated 1711 with a couple of pencil notes at the top; large folding map of Orkney (small tape repair to a fold edge); Orkney text pp 1-4; map of Zetland; Shetland text pp 1-42, small red ink star in top corner p10 and large black ink blot top outer corner p37 slightly affecting one word; finis. Contents generally very clean with varying degrees of toning to the paper. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A pag.

London: Printed for John Morphew . 1711. 8vo., pp. [14], 416; first few leaves browned but a very good copy in contemporary panelled speckled, calf, rebacked preserving the old spine; modern bookplate.First edition, ordinary paper issue, the very rare first state, with G6-7 preserved (though slashed for cancellation); the cancellans was printed on A8, not here present. This is the first authorized collection of Swift's early work in verse and prose. Twenty-five pieces were assembled by Morphew, with the blessing of the author, including the Meditation upon a Broom-stick, the Account of the Death of Mr. Partridge, and Baucis and Philemon. In later years it was to provide the inspiration, the title, and most of the first volume for the Pope–Swift Miscellanies in Prose and Verse of 1727-32. A last minute decision to omit the final paragraph of 'A Discourse of the Contests and Dissentions in Athens and Rome' (three pages on political corruption), led to the cancellation of G6-7 and its replacement with a single page printed on what was originally A8 (here excised). We can trace only two other copies (British Library and Rothschild) that preserve these leaves, slit as here.Teerink-Scouten 2; Rothschild 2015. Language: English [Attributes: First Edition]
