[Click Below for Full Description]

1711. America. Western Hemisphere, North America, South America, California as an Island, Caribbean). Issued 1711, London by Cluverius. Engraved by John Senex. Fine early 18th century engraved map with lovely hand color. Cherub holds title banner at top left, California is shown as a prominent island, one of the great cartographic myths of this era. Note how the northwest part of America is truncated with a partial outline of a landmass titled Anian. New Zealand is seen at lower left as just a partial outline. Off the coast of Japan just below the cartouche is the apocryphal "Company's Land". Nice looking example, pleasing age patina, couple extraneous fold-lines, any minor age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Sheet Measures c. 9" H x 12 1/4" W. (SOUTH SEA COMPANY.)
1711-1751. Legislating for a Bubble Together 32 acts, folio, extracted from previous bound volumes retaining backstrips, one act recently rebound in marbled wrappers. Housed in a black flat-back cloth box by the Chelsea Bindery. Some light browning (more substantial to a few items), sporadic foxing, occasional very minor chipping at extremities, some leaves loosening from stitching but all still holding. Overall in very good condition. A substantial collection of parliamentary acts relating to the formation, regulation, and eventual collapse of the South Sea Company, as well as the parliamentary repercussions against those responsible and attempts to ameliorate the effects. Such substantial collections of South Sea material are uncommon in commerce, and moreover some of the individual items are rare by any criteria, being present in only a few institutions or being absent from Sperling's bibliography of the South Sea Company. Comprising: i) An Act for making good deficiencies, and satisfying the publick debts; and for erecting a corporation to carry on a trade to the South-Seas; and for the encouragement of the fishery; and for liberty to trade in unwrought iron with the subjects of Spain; and to repeal the Acts for registring seamen. 1711-1717. Quarto (220 x 165 mm); five volumes. Vol. I: eighteen map-sheets (of twentyone) and six plates; vol. II: twenty-two (of twenty-three) maps and two plates; vol. III: fifteen (of sixteen) maps and two plates; vol. IV: eleven (of twelve) maps; vol. V: twenty (of twenty-one) map sheets. Contemporary calf, panelled in blind, red morocco label to vol. IV (other labels missing). Spines worn. London : John Nutt [for John Nicholson], The Atlas Geographus was an important English world geography, issued as a partwork between 1708 and 1717, and then assembled in five volumes, dated from 1711 to 1717: Europe in two volumes; volume III Asia, IV Africa and V Americas. While authorship is generally attributed to Herman Moll, he was probably only responsible for supplying the new maps required. Part 1 was advertised on 18th June, 1708 as ?This Day is Publish?d .?; subsequent parts, priced 1s., were promised monthly, but the final part was only advertised on 2nd March, 1717. Compared with Shirley?s collation, this set lacks 4 (World), 5 (Europe), 36 (Spain and Portugal), 72 (Africa) and 82 (New Guinea). 63 is replaced by Moll?s map of Persia and 79 by Moll?s map of Guinea. There are additional maps of ?Aegyptus and Cyrene?, ?Mauritania ?? and the ?Sea Coast from Streights of Magellan ?? The complete set is particularly rare, and even individual volumes are very scarce. Reference: Shirley, T.Moll-3a: calling for 100 sheets (numbered to 101, but 86 omitted), the collation differing (as is not uncommon).

Shaftesbury
1711. Shaftesbury. Characteristicks of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times. In Three Volumes. The Second Edition Corrected. By the Right Honourable Ashley, Earl of Shaftesbury Volume I is from the fourth edition, Dublin 1743, volume II and III are, by title-page dates and points, from the first edition, 1711, no place or publisher. The Three volumes are uniformly bound as a set in full calf with clear gilt labels. The main serious flaws in an otherwise handsome set are some starting and weakness at the front hinge of volume I and a worm-line running at the bottom margin for the last 12 pages of the index. (see photos) Early owner signatures. Volume I has the same Gribelin frontispiece portrait and title-page device as the second edition. Pagination: Volume I: [5],including engraved frontispiece; iv, 364. Volume II: 443 pages, with half-title and title included in pagination. Volume III: [4], 344, [70 pages with errata for all three volumes of the 1711 edition. The index, even though it is for the 1711 edition, applies reliably to the first volume, from the 4th edition, since Shaftebury’s changes were small-scale. The third volume differs from subsequent editions, for instance, in having, on page 211 (O2), line 8, “appears a kind of travelling thro invisible ideal ” instead of “appears but a kind of travelling thro invisible ideal “ and on page 243, (Q2) , line 14: “men willingly joining with me, to congratulate" rather than “men willingly joining with me in this representation, to congratulate “. KIRISHITAN KOSATSU
1711. Stating in an approximate & abbreviated translation: "Regulation. If anyone knows of Christian disciples, already banned, please report to the Government. Rewards are as below: Padre (bateren): 500 pieces of silver coin. Priests (iruman): 300 pieces of silver coin. Christian disciples: 300 pieces of silver coin. Anyone knowingly living with a Christian: 100 pieces of silver coin. If a family member identifies a Christian within his family, the reward is 500 pieces of silver coin. Anyone identified as having hidden a Christian will bear responsibility along with his landlord and his five-person unit (goningumi). May 1711." With the name at end in brush and ink: "Yoshitaro." [Japan]: May 1711.This kosatsu (official bulletin board) provides an important historical reminder of the extraordinary risks to communities suspected of faith in Christ during the long era of the Kakure Kirishitan (Hidden Christians) in Japan. The communal - not just individual - risk was enormous. Authorities in every city displayed kosatsu in public spaces - mounted on a pole, hung at village government sites (of which ours shows evidence), or secured to a bigger structure located in strategic areas (crossroads, vicinity of bridges, harbors, etc.). They were generally inscribed with regulations, edicts, and notices. While the ink is occasionally faded, the characters are absolutely legible. In fine condition. One crack in the wooden board. One can see three holes along the top edge where hooks for hanging were once inserted.

HORACE. BENTLEY, Richard [editor]
Cambridge: [University Press], 1711. Large quarto. 460 pp. Complete with added engraved title-page dated 1708 and half-title. Engraved printer's device on title-pages and old ink ownership inscription on the first title page. Full Contemporary stained calf, professionally and skillfully rebacked spine with five raised bands, gilt red morocco lettering piece, all edges sprinkled red. Very occasional light spotting. Boards with some edge-wear, Frontispiece slightly darkened. Overall a very attractive, notably clean copy with a bright text. "Probably no other poet's works have been so often copied or printed, and hundreds of versions in every modern language have been made of the least translatable of poets. Certainly Horace far outstrips all competitors when it comes to pocket editions: all over the world, where the libraries or even the smaller collections of personalia of the great have been preserved, a well-worn pocket Horace is very frequently among them. . In 1711 Bentley was fighting against the angry fellows of Trinity College, Cambridge, who were petitioning the College Visitor, the Bishop of Ely, to remove him from the Mastership. Bentley wished to enlist the support of the Crown (which appoints the master), and he did it -- by dedicating his edition of Horace to Harley, then Prime Minister. "Bentley (1662-1742) was and remains the greatest of English classical scholars. His reputation was made by his Dissertation on Phalaris, the final crushing blow in the 'Battle of the Books' . His immense learning was combined with an equal control in its deployment. Athough he … [Click Below for Full Description]

Orbis Terrarum.(World Map, Continents, Arctic, Antarctic). Issued 1711, London for Cluver, anon. engraver. Decorative early 18th century engraved map of the world in hemispheres, with lovely hand color. Charming figures representing the continents in the four corners, atlas in bottom cusp. America shows a typical bulbous protuberance in the west, blank and supposedly without any known details. A random assortment of mountains appears in the southwest below an entirely blank north. Norumbega is named within modern day New England. Across the bottom of both spheres is a giant mythical southern continent labelled as unknown. Source of the Nile in Africa is shown as mountains and two giant lakes south of the equator. Australia is shown with only a very partial outline of the east, attached to New Guinea. A large lake feeds five rivers in southeast Asia. Korea is clearly shown as an island. Iceland is shown but not named, beside it another large island almost certainly representing the mythical Friesland. Nice looking example, pleasing age patina, any minor age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Original fold lines as issued. Sheet Measures c. 9 1/2"H x 13 7/8"W. Engraved Area Measures c. 6 1/8"H x 11 7/8"W.[R20078].

William Pittis
ont> John Baker : London, 1711. A piece of political writing by William Pittis. A well-preserved copy of this work which delves into the political state of England during the eighteenth century. There is no author to the title page, though the work has since been attributed to William Pittis, and the dedication is signed 'W. P'. This work regards the Parliament in England at the start of the eighteenth century. Queen Anne had called the third parliament on September 27 1710 and assembled on 25 November 1710. The government was formed from a Tory Landslide which reflected the current sentiment following the trial of Henry Sacheverell. Pittis discusses the impeachments or lack thereof of several individuals to this work. This political tract was written at a time where anti-war sentiment had risen and Pittis touches on the current attitudes and debates regarding war. Pittis also provides a list of the Parliament and Convocation. ESTC no. T92746. The first edition of this work, which is held in a contemporary binding. A fascinating look into the politics in England at the turn of the eighteenth century. Condition: In a full calf binding, with tooling to the boards. Externally, smart with light shelfwear to the joints and extremities. Faint personal library label to the head of spine, '23'. Prior owner's inscription to the title page, 'To. Price'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are unusually bright, with just the occasional light spot. Overall Condition: Very Good Indeed [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
