[Steele, Sir Richard, attributed to]
London: s.n, "Printed in the Year 1711. Price Two Pence". First edition. Title-page with typographical ornaments. 16pp. 1 vols. 8vo. A Whig satire on Harley, Lord Oxford, and on the Tory opposition to Marlborough, using Livy's story of the rivalry of M. Manlius and Camillus as a framework, with Harley as Manlius ("a turbulent, bold, and crafty Nature"); Marlborough as Camillus ("the great Saviour and Restorer of his Country"), and the Gauls, of course, the French. In 1711, Harley was appointed Lord Treasurer, and Marlborough dismissed from all offices. The attribution to Steele is likely, as he was allied with (and profited from) the Whigs. A rare and important pamphlet at a critical time in English history, when the Tories were negotiating a peace with France to end the War of the Spanish Succession. Morgan N-522; OCLC: 5191600 (8 copies in American libraries); not in Blanchard, Tracts. Self wrappers, untrimmed. Title and final page a bit soiled, otherwise a very good, sound copy.

Hare, Francis; (or Jonathan Swift?).
London: A. Baldwin, 1711. 8vo (20.8 cm, 8.25"). vi, 42 pp. Generally attributed to Francis Hare, Bishop of Chichester, but also attributed to Jonathan Swift, this anonymously published political analysis expresses concern not only that putting the Duke of Anjou on the Spanish throne would tilt the balance of power in Europe too far towards France, but also that such action would greatly damage the livelihoods of English textile workers, among others dependent on international commerce; also questioned are Swift's views on the ramifications of trade with Portuguese America. This is the second, expanded edition.         ESTC T58140; Alden & Landis, European Americana, 711/126; Teerink-Scouten 1034. Blue-green paper wrappers, old style. Title-page with small numeric stamp, faint traces of other annotations. Small area of worming in inner margins, touching a very few letters. A few scattered spots, otherwise clean; edges untrimmed.

Magnificent translation of one of the tracates of the "Mishne Torah," a code of Jewish law by one of the most important Jewish authorities, Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon, better known as Maimonides or by the Hebrew abbreviation RaMBaM (1135-1204). The Mishneh Torah was compiled between 1170 and 1180, while he was living in Egypt, and is regarded as Maimonides' magnum opus. This tractate deals with the "Parah aduma" or red cow aka red heifer, a cow that is sacrificed and whose ashes are used for the ritual purification of people who came into contact with a corpse. In Hebrew and Latin. Overall in good condition. R. Moses Maimonides (Rambam) was a 12th century Jewish philosopher and halachic legal scholar. A highly controversial figure, both during his lifetime and after his death, but generally acknowledged as the preeminent Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages. Maynwaring, Arthur.
1711. Uncut copy of the first (or possibly second) edition of what the Henry Stevens Company described in its 1927 Catalogue of Rare Americana (#671) as a "secretly printed" pamphlet in which the anonymous writer (Arthur Manwaring) studies what he sees as the problem of the growing power and influence of France in Europe and the New World (Canada, the West Indies, and potentially much of the Spanish empire). Such concern sprang from the Peace of Utrecht ending the War of the Spanish Succession, by which the French House of Bourbon assumed the Spanish throne following the death of the last of the Hapsburgs and a decade-long war. There were two editions printed: This, with the pagination as above and with the title-page sporting a double-rule around the text area, and another with only 32 pp. and no border on the title-page. Precedence apparently not established.

Octavo (8" x 5") bound 3/4 leather with marbled boards. Edited by Sir Tancred Robinson. 2d edition. First published in 1694, which contained only two maps, The book is important because it contains on of the earliest English accounts of Abel Janszoon Tasman's famous voyage of 1642 from Batavia, during which he discovered Tasmania and New Zealand and vited Tonga and Fiji (Hill 1475). After the peace he was chosen to conduct a voyage of exploration in the South Seas. He set sail from Deptford on November 26, 1669, and entered the Straits of Magellan in October of the following year. Purtroppo esemplare mediocre e scompleto. Mancano 4 carte (da pag. 9 a 16). Rifilato e macchiato con strappetti e vecchie note ai margini a causa dell?uso a cui era destinato. Hare, Francis; (or Jonathan Swift?)
London: A. Baldwin 8vo (20.8 cm, 8.25"). vi, 42 pp.. 1711 Generally attributed to Francis Hare, Bishop of Chichester, but also attributed to Jonathan Swift, this anonymously published political analysis expresses concern not only that putting the Duke of Anjou on the Spanish throne would tilt the balance of power in Europe too far towards France, but also that such action would greatly damage the livelihoods of English textile workers, among others dependent on international commerce; also questioned are Swift's views on the ramifications of trade with Portuguese America. This is the second, expanded edition. Blue-green paper wrappers, old style. Title-page with small numeric stamp, faint traces of other annotations. Small area of worming in inner margins, touching a very few letters. A few scattered spots, otherwise clean; edges untrimmed.
