1711. London. unbound. Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 17" x 21". Sheet measures 17 7/16" x 21 5/8". Beautiful early sea chart of the Coromandel coast in southeast India covering the state of Andhra Pradesh from Bheemunipatnam (Bimlepatnam) near Visakhapatnam to Armegon dating to circa 1711. Includes soundings in fathoms, coastal features, rhumb lines, villages and geographical features. Towns and forests rendered in profile. Originally published in John Thornton's (1641-1708) "English Pilot the Third Book, describing the Sea Coasts...in Oriental Navigation" in 1703. The "English Pilot" was the first English Atlas to chart American waters and was published in many editions from 1671 to 1803. Samuel Thornton (d. 1715) took over his father's business in 1707, and reissued many of his works including this map. Overall wear and scattered toning, narrow margins. Stain in lower left and near centerfold. Overall a lovely example.

1711. Hardcover. 12mo. pp. 310, with 8 engraved plates including the frontispiece. Bound with “A complete key…” [1724] pp. 36. The second part “an account of a battal between the antient and modern books”, the third part titled “a discourse concerning the mechanical operation of the spirit”, and the additional “complete key” all contain separate title pages. Four editions of “a tale of a tub” were published in 1711 with slight variations. In this copy: “the quote from Lucretius on title page begins ‘Juvat queÂ’, p.176 line 1 from foot has ‘StudantÂ’ and p.177 lines 1-2 from top have ‘sqee-zing’” [See ESTC]. Pages show occasional minor wear, mild spotting and age-toning etc. The frontispiece contains a 5 mm edge tear and a minor chip to the bottom corner tip; a miniscule spot of worming is present on the upper inner margins of pp. 240-64. The text reveals several tiny hand letter corrections (difficult to notice at first glance); an early ink marginalia bracket (23 mm) is also located on the inner margin of p. 55. Four of the eight plates show an unfinished attempt at hand coloring– one or two figures per illustration containing some pale blue and/or beige color. The plate opposite p. 113 displays a rather crude coloring job – dark blue obscuring the detail on the central figureÂ’s clothing. Jonathan SwiftÂ’s sa … [Click Below for Full Description]

LINDER, JOHAN.
Stockholm, J. H. Werner, 1711. 8:o. (2),62 pp. Fine but slightly soiled vellum-like boards with red leather label on front cover. Contemporary marbled wrappers preserved. Faint dampstain throughout. Crossed-out signature on title. Waller 5839. Johan Linder (1678-1724, raised to the nobility as Lindestolpe 1719) came from an impoverished home but his aptitude for studies soon made him well-known and he rose in the ranks. He won international reputation through his doctoral thesis, presented in Harderwijk, The Netherlands in 1707, which treats venereal diseases. Linder was, among other things, a ship's doctor in the Swedish Navy and spa physician at the Viksberg Spa in Salem south of Stockholm, but also published works on the dyeing of textiles and some occasional poems. During his service in the navy he experienced the prevailing plague, which led to the present work. Linder discusses the significance of the weather in the genesis of the disease, but claims that more than half of the people who die in the plague die because of imagination and fear. Ridinger, Johann Elias
[Click Below for Full Description]

Petrarca Francesco
Bartolomeo Soliani, Modena, 1711. In ottime condizioni, carta bianca, fresca, frusciante, senza mende rimarchevoli.
