Leclerc, Jean

Third edition increased. The first edition of 1707 and the second in 1709 by the same publisher had only one volume. Full Sheepskin brown ice time. Back to nerves decorated with rich cabinets. Part of title in red morocco. Hat Volume I threadbare. Little lacking in supéreure cap of Volume II. Good copy. The author held a place in the literary life of his time, and his Odes had considerable success. His most famous book of the opera was L'Europe Galante, but it brought many innovations to the stage; used the salon of the Marquise de Lambert, it was originally the second Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns, taking advantage of modern declaring unnecessary to and the rule of the three units in the theater. If his poems have become difficult to read (especially considering its literary life of the time), they are just as critical work, the important testimony of an era. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. DEFOE, Daniel:
and punished London Printed in the Year First edition, 1711. 8vo., 88pp., the issue with ‘known. I.’ (rather than ‘known, viz. I.’) on the title-page, and with ‘against’ and ‘publick’ spelled correctly on pages 11 and 25, bound in late twentieth century paper wrappers. A VG clean copy. (Rothschild, 749; Kress 2746; Attributed to Defoe by Higgs; Not in Wright). An attack on the rising problem of fraud within trade, with some advice on how to counteract it. It was particularly aimed at John Smith, the Chancellor of the Exchequer and other ministers. The preamble to the patent creating Harley a peer had recited his public services and praised him for preventing ‘the further plundering of the Nation’. Who were the plunderers? The former Whig ministry, according to Tory propagandists, who murmured charges of bribery, misappropriation, fraudulent victualling, over-mustering, and expenditure beyond the Estimates. But ‘innocent Men’, writes the author, may be ‘pointed at for Politick Designs, to blacken their Reputation [and to] confirm Faction . the Guilt charged upon them in the publick Discourse of the Town, cannot be proved’. Let the new ministry look to its own management of state affairs. The pamphlet ends with a fable of the Commonwealth of the Brutes: ‘There was . a Season when . the Horses were accused to the Lyon of having mismanaged and misbehaved in the publick Trusts .’ Swift apparently had some hand in writing the fulsome Latin preamble to Harley’s patent, with its remark about plundering the nation; and he has also been credited with translating the preamble into Eng … [Click Below for Full Description]

WAR OF SPANISH SUCCESSION]
Printed, and Sold by J. Baker, London, 1711. [8], 88pp. [Bound with:] A detection of the Earl of Gallway's Conduct at Almanza. London. Printed for John Morphew, 1711. First edition. 15pp, [1]. 8vo. Recent red cloth, lettered in gilt. Very slight wear to extremities. Recent endpapers, small paper flaw to title-page vignette of first work, else internally clean and crisp. Two tracts relating to the comportment of French Huguenot soldier and diplomat Henri de Massue, Earl of Galway (1648-1720) during the War of Spanish Succession. As commander of the British forces in Spain, Galway led the charge at the decisive Battle of Almanza, an engagement which saw the virtual annihilation of the Anglo-Portuguese army and ensured the Spanish throne passed to a French claimant. In 1711, the year in which both of the present works were published, Galway found himself the focal point of several debates within the House of Lords regarding the management of the Peninsular War, resulting in Parliament censuring his version of events in favour of Peterborough. DUPIN Louis Ellies
chez André Pralard. 1711 - - chez André Pralard., à Paris 1711, in-8 (13x20cm), (30) 459pp. (27)., relié. - Edition originale. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First Edition. Full Sheepskin brown vintage. Back tooled raised.
Sidste side fejlagtigt pag. 344. Ifølge Bibl. Danica IV, 476 mangler alle eksemplarerne i Det kongelige Bibliotek kobberne. Philipp von Zesen [1619-89] occupies a seperate place in the German literature of his time. On different occasions he lived for several years in Amsterdam and was influenced by Dutch literature and even more by the Dutch outlook on Life. He was the most nervous and impressionable of the Baroque writers, a genuine man of literature who lived of his pen without having any other occupation. His novels are the most modern of his time. It is remarkable that both Grimmelshausen and Zesen, almost at the same time, dealt with the story of Joseph. With his annotations Zesen converted the work into a thesaurus of knowledge. (Curt von Faber du Faur). German Baroque Literature 830 first edition only. Goedeke III,102,57 - do not mention the Danish edition. Kroker Barockliteratur p. 765, only the german edition. ..
