Frankf. a. M. 1556 soll sehr gut seyn". Am Vorsatz, von offenbar anderer Hand, Besitzvermerk "Dr. J. Jacoby 1859". Goedeke I, 483, 18. Ebert 18846. Borchling/Cl. 3885. Jantz 1264. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Together with a particular account of the nursing of Lemon and Orange Trees in Northern climats. Written in Dutch, translated into English. The second edition, with great amendments.

London, D. Midwinter, 1711. 8vo (196 x 118mm). pp. (6), 249, (1), 11, (1), with a fine allegorical frontispiece showing Flora and 2 engraved plates. A popular treatise on horticulture. It covers not only the florist's flowers popular at the time, but also has a large section devoted to the vegetable garden. Van Oosten was a nurseryman at Leiden. The Dutch gardener not only gives details concerning the growing of flowers and bulbous roots, for which the Dutch have long been famous, but also includes another branch of gardening in which they have shown excellence, namely the cultivation of fruit trees."Many pages in van Oosten's book are devoted to the tulip, which he says, 'is justly called the Queen of flowers, and the chief jewel of Flora'" (Henrey p. 394)./"Although his book shows clear evidence of personal experience in grafting and sowing, the part on orange and lemon trees is translated from J. de la Quintinye's 'Traité de la culture des orangers' (The Anglo-Dutch garden n. 158, p. 303).//Hernrey 1198.

Esemplare in buone condizioni conservative.

        A Roman Story

London: s.n, "Printed in the Year 1711. Price Two Pence" - A Whig satire on Harley, Lord Oxford, and on the Tory opposition to Marlborough, using Livy's story of the rivalry of M. Manlius and Camillus as a framework, with Harley as Manlius ("a turbulent, bold, and crafty Nature"); Marlborough as Camillus ("the great Saviour and Restorer of his Country"), and the Gauls, of course, the French. In 1711, Harley was appointed Lord Treasurer, and Marlborough dismissed from all offices. The attribution to Steele is likely, as he was allied with (and profited from) the Whigs. A rare and important pamphlet at critical time in English history, when the Tories were negotiating a peace with France to end the War of the Spanish Succession First edition. 8vo. Title page with typographical ornaments. 16pp. Self wrappers, untrimmed. Title and final page a bit soiled, otherwise a very good, sound copy.       1711 - Amstelaedami [Amsterdam], Excudit Franciscus Halma, 1711.

Joh. Friedrich Gleditsch und Sohn, Leipzig 1711 - Three parts in one thick volume with an appendix and an index. 4to. [21.5 x 17 cm], engraved portrait frontispiece, [22], including title printed in red and black, 236, 422, 474, 84, [56] p., with 16 additional engraved plates and one woodcut vignette. Bound in contemporary stiff vellum, covers a bit soiled, spine spotted. Some minor fingersoiling on title and light even toning throughout, but generally a fresh copy, with good impressions of the plates. Scarce first and only edition of the first full-fledged study of the Greek Orthodox Church, extensively illustrated, and an important addition to the nascent German tradition of studying the history of religious traditions without partisan intent. Of particular interest for the theological underpinnings of church architecture. Heineccius was a Lutheran, and he pursues his object of study as an antiquarian and historian, not as a controversialist. The work deals with the foundation and early history of the church as well as contemporary religious practice, treating such topics as the calendar, architecture and ecclesiastical ranks and dress. Organized in three parts, the first covers early history; the second theology; and third contemporary practice. The numerous plates picture architectural ground-plans for churches, ecclesiastical accoutrements, costume, and a bird¿s-eye view of the patriarch¿s residence at Constantinople. Johann Michael Heineccius (1674-1722) was a well-known jurist, historian, preacher, and theologian, originally Dutch but living in Halle. Best known for the present work, he also made one of the first systematic study of seals (De veteribus Germanorum aliarumque nationum sigillis, 1710). * OCLC record. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

London: Printed for D Brown, 1711 [ii],xxix,[vii],191,[1]blank, 223 pages with 1 of 3 large fold out maps and 15 of 19 engraved fold out plates. Octavo (8" x 5") bound 3/4 leather with marbled boards. Edited by Sir Tancred Robinson. 2d edition. First published in 1694, which contained only two maps, The book is important because it contains on of the earliest English accounts of Abel Janszoon Tasman's famous voyage of 1642 from Batavia, during which he discovered Tasmania and New Zealand and vited Tonga and Fiji (Hill 1475). Rear Admiral Sir John Narborough, RN was an English naval commander of the 17th century, who served with distinction during the Anglo-Dutch Wars and against the Barbary Coast pirates. He was descended from an old Norfolk family. He received his commission in 1664, and in 1666 was promoted lieutenant for gallantry in the action with the Dutch fleet off the Downs in June of that year. After the peace he was chosen to conduct a voyage of exploration in the South Seas. He set sail from Deptford on November 26, 1669, and entered the Straits of Magellan in October of the following year. In 1670 he visited Port Desire in Argentina and claimed the territory for the Kingdom of Great Britain, but returned home in June 1671 without accomplishing his original purpose. A narrative of the expedition was published at London in 1694 under the title An Account of several late Voyages and Discoveries to the South and North. During the Third Anglo-Dutch War Narborough was second captain of the Lord High Admiral's ship the Prince, and conducted himself with such conspicuous valor at the battle of Sol (Southwold Bay) in May 1672 that he won special approbation, and shortly afterwards was made rear-admiral and knighted. In 1675 he was sent to suppress the Tripoline piracies, and by the bold expedient of dispatching gun-boats into the harbor of Tripoli at midnight and burning the ships he induced the them to agree to a treaty. Shortly after his return he undertook a similar expedition against the Algerians. In 1680 he was appointed commissioner of the Navy, an office he held till his death. He was buried at Knowlton church, Kent, where a monument has been erected to his memory. The island of Fernadina, the youngest and westernmost island of the Galapagos Archipelago, was originally named 'Narborough Island' in his honor by the 17th century buccaneer William Ambrosia Cowley.         Sphaera Armillaris Copernicana.

Amsterdam, 1711 - Fine broadside illustrating the so-called "Leiden Sphere" Hand-coloured engraved broadsheet. Fine broadside illustrating the so-called "Leiden Sphere," engraved by Pieter Vander Aa in Leiden. The Leiden Sphere, a mechanical armillary sphere or orrery, was built around 1670 by the clockmaker Steven Tracy, for the mayor of Rotterdam. It is among the earliest and most elaborate mechanical planetaria to be operated by a clockwork mechanism. The device depicts the Copernican solar system, in which the Earth and the other planets revolve around a stationary sun. In order of distance from the sun, the Sphere includes Mercury, Venus, the Earth (with its moon), Mars, Jupiter with the four Galilean satellites, and Saturn. The mechanism in the base of the Sphere regulates an accurate representation of the orbital periods of each of the planets and their inclined orbits around the sun. In 1710, this magnificent piece was given to the University of Leiden, where it could be seen in operation for more than a century. Tracy incorporated 2 vertical brass rings (1.5 meters in diameter), which support a wide zodiac-band (28.6 cm) composed of embossed constellation figures cur from sheet brass and mounted in rectangular frames. The Sphere sits on a wooden cube (84 cm tall). A 13 cm clock-face at the top of the pedestal displays the time and slot apertures indicated the day, month and year. Among the notable features of the Sphere, it was the first such device to incorporate a geared model of Jupiter's system. The basic design is similar to that of the Romer - Horrebow ceiling planetarium, but with a number of important additions, including the incorporation of offset cams to give the model planets a Keplerian motion similar to those on the Rittenhouse orreries. The Saturn cam is inclined, whereas the other planets (other than earth), the cams are horizontal. Following receipt, the Sphere was thoroughly overhauled by the Den Haag clockmaker Bernard van der Cloesen. The Leiden Sphere still resides in Leiden in the Rijksmuseum. The illustration provides an excellent depiction of the sphere, although it omits the eccentric collars, but adds a ring for the celestial equator and a spindle that passes upwards through the sun. There are apparently two editions of the broadside, one in French and Dutch (the present example) and one in English and Dutch. Both are exceedingly rare. The original English translation of the text is as follows: THE AUTOMATICK OR SELF-MOVING SPHERE, Mended and repair'd by THRASIUS, Which was done by the Invention and direction of Mr. ADRIAN VROESIUS, according to the Calculation of NICOLAS STAMPIOEN. Which was given to the Publick use by the Widdow and Heirs of Mr. SEBASTIAN SCHEPERS, Late SENATOR of the City of Rotterdam, &c. &c. &c. Now improv'd and put in better order by BERNARD CLOESEN. Which the CURATORS of the University of LEYDEN, and BURGERMASTERS of the City have presented for the benefit and encouragement of Learning & Astronomy, in the Year MDCCXI. Description of the Armillary Copernican Sphere. THE whole Sphere is made of brass and likewise the greater Circles, (viz.) the ?Üquator, the two Colures, and the Eclyptick, which divides the Zodiack in two equal parts with respect to its latitude, hence the Zodiack has ten degrees of latitude on each side, the twelve signs upon the Zodiack are done with chas'd work and their names mark'd upon the Eclyptick. The Eclyptick 3 is divided into degrees and half degrees, the Diameter of each of these Circles and consequently of the whole Sphere is five Rhinland feet. The Sphere stands upon a Pedestal of three feet high, in which is enclos'd a Clock with its Pendulum and weights which goes nine days without winding up, and may be made to goe longer at pleasure, it not only shews the years, the months, the days, the hours and minutes, but likewise the motions of all the Planets both primary and secondary, in which the Earth is reckon'd, accoording to the Copernican Systeme, if you

"Chardin’s massive work, along with many other accounts of travel to exotic lands, contributed to formation of one of the great streams of European knowledge leading to what Paul Hazard called "la crise de la conscience européenne" and hence to the Enlightenment. Some of his ideas, for example, on the influence of climate on man, had a considerable impact, and his work was read and commented on favorably by a number of great 18th-century figures like Charles-Louis de Montesquieu, Edward Gibbon, Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and William Jones." (Emerson). Atabey, 219. Chahine, 912. Emerson, cit. Giuseppe Caraci in Enciclopedia Italiana, IX, 936: "La prima edizione completa fu stampata ad Amsterdam nel 1711". . Ghani, pp 70-73. Diba, p. 238. Schwab, 87. Wilson, p. 40. Signature and date to title page: "Joseph Jaquette. June 20th. 1825." Some age browning and welling to pages not affecting text. Magnificent translation of one of the tracates of the "Mishne Torah," a code of Jewish law by one of the most important Jewish authorities, Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon, better known as Maimonides or by the Hebrew abbreviation RaMBaM (1135-1204). The Mishneh Torah was compiled between 1170 and 1180, while he was living in Egypt, and is regarded as Maimonides' magnum opus. This tractate deals with the "Parah aduma" or red cow aka red heifer, a cow that is sacrificed and whose ashes are used for the ritual purification of people who came into contact with a corpse. In Hebrew and Latin. Overall in good condition. R. Moses Maimonides (Rambam) was a 12th century Jewish philosopher and halachic legal scholar. A highly controversial figure, both during his lifetime and after his death, but generally acknowledged as the preeminent Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages. He was born in Córdoba, Spain but fled as a child from the Almohad persecution. He eventually settled in Egypt where he served as a rabbi, physician and philosopher. His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah, his only work not in Arabic, still carries canonical authority, particularly within the Yemenite Jewish community, as the codification of Talmudic law. His other work includes a commentary on the Mishnah entitled Kitab al-Siraj, Kitab al-Fara'I, a book on precepts, and the philosophical work Dalalat al-Ha'irin, known in Hebrew as the Moreh Nevukhim, The Guide to the Perplexed. The major premise is an attempted philosophical/theological reconciliation of the Hebrew Bible and Greek knowledge. This work came to play a central role in all subsequent major controversies over philosophy within the Jewish community during the Middle Ages. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

LA THEORIE ET LA PRATIQUE DU JARDINAGE. Ou L'On Traite A Fond Des Beaux Jardins appellà s communà ment Les Jardins De Propretà , Comme sont Les Parterres, Les Bosquets, Les Boulingrins, &c.

The Hague: Chez Pierre Husson 1711 - First Dutch edition of the most influential work on garden design of the eighteenth century. It effectively codified the design principles of the French formal garden and continued in print for at least six decades. "France did not become mistress of Europe in garden art merely because of such of her examples as could be copied; of almost equal importance was the wide popularity of a book which first appeared anonymously in France in 1709 under the title THEORIE ET PRATIQUE DU JARDINAGE. Never before did a book lay down the principles of any style so surely and so intelligibly in instructive precepts." (Gothein, HISTORY OF GARDEN ART, volume II, pg 111.) This edition, published in Holland, is the first of many pirated editions to appear outside of France. It carefully follows the original Paris edition, even in its pagination, and the plates are nicely engraved by J. Lamsvelt with strong dark impressions. 4to (25.8 x 20 cm); (xii) + 208 pp. with numerous engraved text illustrations and ornaments + 32 folding plates (chiefly garden plans). Recent quarter vellum with red leather spine label and gilt lettering; marginal foxing of a few plates, but generally a clean and attractive copy.

Trajecti ad Rhenum : ex off. G. Vande Water. [Utrecht], 1711..
