Aa X, pp. 240-241; ad 4: not in Knuttel; Picarta; WorldCat. Collection of 4 extremely rare broadsheets with elegies on the death of Willem IV (Willem Karel Hendrik Friso), Prince of Orange (1711-1751), the first hereditary stadtholder of the Netherlands. At least three of the four were reprinted a year later in Dichtkundige cypressenbladen, a collection of elegies on the death of Willem IV.Ad 1: Second copy located of an elegy by the poet Jan Meijer, who wrote several occasional poems under the motto "omnia conando, docilis solertia vincit", including an earlier poem welcoming the Prince into the city of Amsterdam (Onverwagte welkomst-begroetinge aan W.C.H. Friso uit naam der burgeren van Amsterdam). The main poem in the present broadside consists of 7 verses, the first of 6 lines and the rest of 8 lines, and is followed by another 4-line poem at the foot.Ad 2: Second copy located of an elegiac sonnet by the poet Adriaan van Ommering, who openly accused himself of murdering William IV in the line "Ik, ... sidder lezer. Ik, ik heb dit feit bedreven" (I, ... tremble reader. I, I have committed this deed).Ad 3: Only copy located of an elegy by the physician and later burgomaster of Culemborg, Cornelis Albertus Kloekhof, consistsing of 14 verses of six lines.Ad 4: Only copy located of an elegiac sonnet by an anonymous poet, written under the motto "ante monet beatitas".These rare, large broadsheets, each printed on a large whole sheet of paper (1mo) are also of typographic interest, in part because they use large initials and types that are not so often used for books aside from occasional heading in large types. All in very good condition, especially considering the ephemeral nature of these publications, with only the ends of a few old folds reinforced. Ad 2 is trimmed close to the outermost edges of the widest line of type at left and right, but they otherwise have generous margins. Rare broadsheets on the death of the Prince of Orange.

Originally published in John Thornton's (1641-1708) "English Pilot the Third Book, describing the Sea Coasts...in Oriental Navigation" in 1703.         Relation du Voyage de l'Isle d'Eutopie.

Delft: Henry van Rhin, 1711. Duodecimo, speckled calf, First edition: a theocratic republic on a South American Island. The author of this utopia remains unknown, but the preface is signed E.R.V.F.L. A fertile island with the capital Macarie had been sliding into corruption and godlessness until society was 'gradually reformed by men's reasoning their way to discover the best procedures' (Gibson). The society they create shares many of its basic tenets with Plato's Republic, most obviously the fact that children are taught and shared communally to avoid the excessive indulgence of parents. All of the people are descendants of the marriage between a French merchant and his wife Marie, who had ten children. The comparison is made with the tribes of Israel: 'Comme le peuple juif descendoit d'un seul Abraham, les Eutopiens descendent tous d'un seul homme.'Meant as a direct comment on the state of European society, the work avers that the piety and strict religion of the Island provide a good and practical example. Worn at extremities, spine chipped with some loss at head, joints starting; internally quite good.

Sha'ar Bat Rabim Mahzor Helek Rishon: ke-minhag kahal kadosh Ashkenazim [Machzor in Hebrew]

1711. (JUDAICA—LITURGY). Sha'ar Bat Rabim Mahzor Helek Rishon: ke-minhag kahal kadosh Ashkenazim [Machzor in Hebrew]. Venice: Stamparia Bragadina [for Joseph and Jacob Hai Kohen], [1711-15]. Two volumes. Folio (10-1/2 by 15-1/4 inches), early full elaborately gilt-decorated calf boards rebacked. $3500.Lovely early 18th-century Venetian Ashkenazi prayer book (two of three volumes), printed on thick and high-quality paper with very wide margins. Two folio volumes in handsome contemporary full calf-gilt bindings.""An even larger, grander edition of the Ashkenazi mahzor, containing the liturgy for 'the Sabbath, the Holidays, the New Month as well as for Purim, Tisha B'Av Â… the wedding ceremony and circumcision,' was published in three large volumes in Venice in 1711. Its title page is ornate, in the grand Italian style. Its publishers, Joseph and Jacob Hai Cohen, announce that their prayer book is published for the congregations in Venice: the Ashkenazi, the Sefardi and the Italian; as well as for those of Padua, Rovigo, Verona, Mantua and Casale Monferrato, Gorizia, and their environs. The special authorizations are printed in very large letters on the first two pages; that of the Padua authorities stipulates that as many copies as were published in 1600 may now be published, and the other grants a copyright for twelve years. Approbation by leading rabbis affirms the 12-year period during which no other editions may be published. The publishers had spent a huge sum of money for so grand a publication and wanted to protect their investment"" (Karp, 185-88). Volume I covers through the end of the Pesach machzor; Volume II is siddur for everyday and Shabbat, Selichot, and Rosh Hashana prayers. The third volume (not present) contains Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) and the Yom Kippur prayers. Three leaves in Volume I with margins trimmed away, possibly to remove the illustrations of the zodiacs in the margins of the prayer for rain. Without Volume III (sometimes this large machzor is seen bound in four volumes, with two title pages, as in Steinschneider). Text in Hebrew, with imprint in Latin. Karp, From the Ends of the Earth: Judaic Treasures in the Library of Congress, 185-88. Steinschneider 2529 (describing two volumes each in two parts; the present copy conforms with the first part of each volume, i.e., with both engraved title pages present, but without Part 2 of Volume I and Part 2 of Volume II). Vinograd, Venice 1596. Zedner, 467. Early owner ink inscription on title pages. A few neat ink marginalia, a few neatly calligraphed emendations to the Hebrew text.Volume II title page trimmed a little closely. Wine and wax stains and signs of ceremonial usage throughout. A very good copy, beautifully bound, clearly used extensively for ceremonial purposes yet very nicely preserved.

The main poem in the present broadside consists of 7 verses, the first of 6 lines and the rest of 8 lines, and is followed by another 4-line poem at the foot.Ad 2: Second copy located of an elegiac sonnet by the poet Adriaan van Ommering, who openly accused himself of murdering William IV in the line "Ik, . sidder lezer. Ik, ik heb dit feit bedreven" (I, . tremble reader.
