Seymour, Gov. John: [Penn vs. Baltimore Dispute]
Maryland, 1709. [6]pp. on folded folio sheets. With transcript. Old fold lines. Bright and clean. Very good plus. An especially noteworthy and very lengthy manuscript letter from John Seymour, governor of the Maryland Colony from 1704 to 1709, to one of the Lords of Trade, detailing the tumult in the colony, namely the conflicting attitudes of Catholics and Protestants, and discussing the developing border dispute between William Penn and Lord Baltimore. Of the Catholics and Protestants, the governor writes in part: "The first by his Lordships favour in lands not only - makes a considerable Interest with many of ye Inhabitants& Delegates, but also gains many Proslites, their Priest being encouraged and supported on all Occasions so that One of them had the Confidense to tamper with One of my Domestiques; and when they checked for these Abuses, the whole party is in a flame, and ready to raise a considerable Contribution for their Defense & Protection & with the extreamest Spite and Malice exclaimed against the severity, as they terme it, of her Majesty's Instructions..." With mention of the Penn-Calvert dispute: "My Lord I should be glad to have her Majesty's Command about running the Northern Lyne of this Province, or to heare my Lord Baltimore and Wm. Penn had adjusted that Difference between themselves...the Borders in both Provinces being hardly restrayned from committing violence on each other...in the mean tyme take the best Care I can to prevent it." Seymour closes the letter with a notably early and rare mention of slaves: "Having in my last to the Lords of Trade s … [Click Below for Full Description]

POLENI, Giovanni (1683-1761). -
Venezia, Pavino, 1709. In-4 (215 x 153 mm.). Solida legatura coeva in pelle marrone; piccole mancanze alle cuffie. Con 9 tavole ripiegate incise in rame. (8), 56 pp.; fresco esemplare. DSB XI, p.65. Riccardi II, 290. First edition of Poleni's first publication. It contains a description of his arithmetical calculating machine, which proved to be the first calculating machine with gears with a variable number of teeth (so called pin-wheel), a great improvement on the proto-computers of Pascal and Leibniz. The Miscellanea also includes dissertations on barometers, thermometer … [Click Below for Full Description]

POLENI, GIOVANNI. - ["THE FIRST DETAILED PRINTED DESCRIPTION OF A MECHANICAL CALCULATING MACHINE"]
Venice, Aloysius Pavinus, 1709. 4to. Completely uncut in the original stitched blank boards. Some brownspotting. Untouched and unrestored in completely original condition. A magnificent copy. Engraved title-vignette. (8), 56 pp. + 9 folded engraved plates. ¶ The very rare first edition of Poleni's first published work, containing - among other things - his seminal treatise on his arithmetic machine, which constitutes the first constructed calculating machine with gears with a variable number of teeth (i.e. pin-wheel). "Poleni designed a machine organized around a new principle for the multiplying mechanism: the variable cogwheel. A large, wooden structure, Poleni's machine looked like a clock. He published in 1709 a detailed, illustrated description of the internal mechanism, the first detailed printed description of a mechanical calculating machine." (Matthew L. Jones, Reckoning with Matter, p. 130). The plates in the "Miscellanea" depict the calculator and constitute the only original presentation of it that still exists, as none of the two models that Poleni himself built (and mentioned in the preface to his work) have survived."Having heard and read of the machines of Pascal and Leibniz, Poleni designed a calculating machine based on the principle of the pinwheel to overcome the shortcomings of these earlier calculators. He built a hardwood model, intended as a gift for the emperor, but decided to destroy it when he learned that a Viennese mechanic named Brauer had anticipated him by presenting the Emperor with a somewhat simpler machine." "Grande interesse destava in quel tempo la personalità di Apollonio di Tiana, filosofo neo-pitagorico del I sec., ambigua figura di sapiente o di mago in fama di santità per la vita che aveva condotto... Filostrato vuol presentare in Apollonio il tipo ideale dell'asceta neo-pitagorico, liberando la sua figura dalle accuse di magia che i suoi oppositori solevano muoverle. Shakespeare William
for Jacob Tonson and E. Curll, 1709. Rare Large Paper Copy of the First Octavo Edition, First Scholarly Edition, First Eighteenth Century Edition and an extract from the First Rowe edition. With engraved decorations to the title and last leaf and with a large decorated initial at the beginning of Act1 Scene1. Large 8vo, bound into protective wraps, with tipped on title label to the upper cover. [79]pp. paginated within the Rowe text. A fine and well preserved copy. The text clean and sound. An excellent copy of this highly important printing, which represents a number of "firsts": the first octavo printing, the first illustrated edition, the first scholarly edition, the first eighteenth century edition, the first to introduce act and scene divisions where they had been lacking in the folio editions, the first manual edition, from the first collection to present a biography of the poet, the first to bear an editor's name and from the first complete collection of the works available other than the said four folios. To quote Colin Franklin, who so eloquently discusses the eighteenth century editions in his book, SHAKESPEARE DOMESTICATED (1991), "This remains a very attractive reading edition, witness to Tonson's first intention in planning it. To that extent and for its innovations Jaggard the bibliographer's comment is true: 'In importance and interest this edition ranks second perhaps to the editio princeps.'"
