Robinson, J Lawrence et al, 1709. 2 parts in 1, 8vo, pp. [30] plus unpaginated lexicon in double column; [16] plus unpaginated lexicon in double column; both title pages printed in red and black; full contemporary paneled calf, slightly later red morocco label on spine slightly chipped; in all, a good, sound copy, or better. With the early ownership signture of John Wordsworth, Trinity College, Cambridge. John Wordsworth (1805-1839) was the William Wordsworth's nephew. "Between 1830 and 1833 he resided in Cambridge, and contributed a notable review of James Scholefeld's Aeschylus to the first number of the Philological Museum. In 1833 he made a long visit, by way of France and Switzerland, to Italy, where he collated the Medicean manuscript of Aeschylus at Florence with a view to a new edition. Some of this work was used by John Conington in his edition of the Choëphoroe (1857). On returning to Cambridge he took up the duties of an assistant tutor at Trinity, giving lectures that were noted for their diligence and erudition" (DNB). Also with the 19th century engraved bookplate of St. Ninians Library. John Wordsworth's brother Charles was connected with the Cathedral of St Ninian, Perth. Charles settled down finally at Perth and was thus brought into close connection with the cathedral of St Ninian. So this book of John's likely descended to Charles who made the donation at St. Ninians.

VALLEMONT, Pierre Le Lorrain de
1709. Paris: Jean Boudot. 1709. 12mo. Contemporary full brown morocco, spine with gilt raised bands, centre tools and red morocco gilt lettering piece; pp. [xii] + 422 + 34 + [7], engraved frontispiece and 23 plates; binding a little rubbed, very good. Provenance: front pastedown with bookplate of Edward Andrade (1887-1971), British physicist and poet. He is best known in scientific circles for his work with Ernest Rutherford on the wavelengths of gamma rays, proving that they were shorter and higher in energy than X-rays. He was also a popular broadcaster, becomign famous for his role on BBC Radio's The Brains Trust during the 1940s. Second French edition. The work was first published in 1693 in Paris with a second edition published in Amsterdam in 1696; this edition follows the Dutch version. This is the first French work on the divining rod, detailing how can help in the discovery of water, mines, treasure chests, thieves and murderers on the run. It is illustrated with some attractive engravings of divining techniques as well as scientific instruments and astrological charts. The author, better known as the Abbé de Vallemont (1649-1721), was a serious physicist who wrote works on magnetism and Copernican astronomy. While the science behind dowsing is, at best, questionable, Vallemont does display a rather modern conception of particles, contending that 'atoms' rose from subterranean water, hidden treasures and people that were so small that they were unaffected by wind and could be detected at some distance.

Valencia & Barcelona: Antonio Bordazar / Joseph Llopis / Rafael Figuero. Published 1709, 1693, 1701, 8vo, limp vellum, good set with some wrinkling and staining to vellum, the first volume with quite a bit of worming to last two thirds of the contents, mainly to inner margin but sometimes to text itself, second volume with much less worming, but some to outer margin of last 30 pages, hardly ever to text; third volume with moderate to heavy worming but not affecting text that horribly. (16) 351 (9) pp, followed by two blank leaves; (8) 467 (5) pp.; (128) 210 (5) pp. First volume has a 19th century engraving of the author crudely pasted to flyleaf. The second volume was first published in Sevilla the year before; this 1693 edition, done while the author was still alive, includes some works not in the first edition. The poet, known as the Mexican Phoenix, is now admired for her early proto-feminist works (her criticism of misogyny earned her the condemnation of the Bishop of Puebla, she was forced to sell her library and do charitable work, dying the year after, in 1695). The three volumes are not often found together, and were to be considered as separately published works. Early reprints of her works achieve steadily high auction records, especially in Mexico, where each of these volumes has fetched as much as 54,000 MXP (about $2800 each). The worming, while significant, does not impede the reading experience of these books very much. A very rare set of one of the finest Mexican authors of the golden age. Good.

SHAKESPEAR[E], William
[London: J[acob] Tonson], 1709. First illustrated edition. Van Der Gucht. 8vo, pp. 62. Removed from a bound volume, with a marvelous full page engraving of the ship wreck, by Van Der Gucht. Some moderate staining, but a very good copy. See Jaggard page 497. This is extracted from the collected works edited by Nicholas Rowe, issued in 6 volumes in 1709. from Wikipedia: "Nicholas Rowe (1674 -1718), English dramatist, poet and miscellaneous writer, was appointed Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom in 1715...Rowe published the first 18th century edition of Shakespeare in six volumes in 1709 (printed by Tonson) and is also considered the first editor of Shakespeare. His practical knowledge of the stage helped him divide the plays into scenes (and sometime acts), with the entrances and exits of the players noted. He also normalized the spelling of names and prefixed each play with a list of the dramatis personae. This 1709 edition was also the first to be illustrated, a frontispiece engraving being provided for each play. Unfortunately Rowe based his text on the corrupt Fourth Folio, a course which was followed by many later 18th century editors who followed in his editorial footsteps. Rowe also wrote a short biography of William Shakespeare, entitled, Some Account of the Life &c. of Mr. William Shakespear.[Attributes: First Edition]

[Honley, England? ; Corning, New York], 1709. Hardcover. Very Good. Octavo. 284pp. (142 unnumbered leaves [pp. 1-284]). Professionally bound in late 19th century quarter vellum and grey cloth over boards with wove paper endleaves, spine lettered direct in gold: "M.S. Sermons, 1709-11", edges stained light black. Early ownership signature in ink on the final leaf recto: "Will: Crofts, His Book, 1758". Gift presentation in ink on the front free endpaper (dated 1944): "To my friend Roger Alling, Christ Church, Corning, N.Y." It is signed by a U.S. Army Major (Air Corps), whose name is illegible. Light soiling to the vellum and first leaf, small tear to the bottom margin of the first two leaves, near fine. An early manuscript collection of expository sermons, densely written in a small but very legible hand. The first leaf, the only leaf written on the recto only, lists 33 sermons identified by biblical citations and a short verse excerpt. Thereafter the manuscript is written continuously on the rectos and versos of every leaf, with catchwords at the foot of most pages. Though when carefully rebound in vellum the binder titled the volume on the spine "M.S. Sermons" it appears more likely that this collection of "sermons" was intended to serve both as a commentary on the scripture, and a manual for those answering the call to serve the cause of Christ as minister of the gospel. Most are dated throughout the body of the text according to the Lady Day calendar, from March, 1709 through April, 1711. Additional biblical verses are quoted throughout the text, all of which appear t … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Sacheverell, Henry)
London [mostly]: [various imprints], 1709. 21 pamphlets, 8vo. Bound together in contemporary sprinkled calf, ruled in blind, morocco label to spine (reading 'Pamphlets Vol. III'), manuscript table of contents to front endpapers. Paper of variable quality with some browning and spotting, one pamphlet with a small wormtrack in blank margin, a few small stains and edge-tears. Binding a little rubbed at extremities, slightly marked, spine darkened. Early inscription to title-page of first work. A contemporary pamphlet collection relating to religious controversies, primarily the impeachment of Henry Sacheverell (1674-1724) after his November 5th sermon which compared dissenters to Catholics, denying the accepted comparison between the Glorious Revolution and the failure of the Gunpowder Plot. Among the texts are the two sermons for which Sacheverell was impeached, the speeches he made during the impeachment, Gilbert Burnet's response to the impeachment and reponses to that, and further reflections on Sacheverell's sermons by other authors. The collection then moves to Roger Maynwaring (1589-1653), who had been impeached by the House of Commons in 1628 for preaching in favour of the royal prerogative; these are reprints contemporary to Sacheverell, to whom Maynwaring is compared on one title-page. The last few pamphlets pick up the argument between Offspring Blackall (1655-1716), Bishop of Exeter, and Benjamin Hoadly (1676-1761) over their understanding of the validity of the Glorious Revolution and resistance to a reigning sovereign, with contributions by … [Click Below for Full Description]
