Mary de la Riviere Manley
London: John Morphew, J Woodward, 1709. Secret Memoirs and Manners of Several Persons of Quality, of Both Sexes. From the New Atlantis an Island in the Mediterranean. Manley, Mary de la Riviere. London: Printed for John Morphew...J Woodward, 1709. 2 Vols, Complete. Mary De La Rivere Manley (1670-1724) is perhaps best-known for this controversial work, Secret Memoirs and Manners of Several Persons of Quality of both Sexes, from the New Atalantis, an Island in the Mediterranean in 1709. In her time, Manley was a notorious character known for her scandalous past (a cousin seduced her into a bigamous marriage), her sensational writing (ranging from the aggressively political to the erotic), and her appearance (she was badly scarred from a bout of smallpox in her youth and known for being overweight). Manley should be included when discussing the central political and literary circles of the time: friends with Jonathan Swift as well as his successor as editor of The Examiner, satirised by Alexander Pope in The Rape of the Lock, and now usually mentioned alongside Aphra Behn and Eliza Haywood as "the fair triumvirate of wit." New Atlantis, the title she is best known for, was published anonymously and claims on its title to have been originally written in Italian. "Later critics read it as pornographic; still later critics co-opted it into the development of the novel; but that is not how its author or its original readers understood it. It is political scandal fiction (what was developed first in France as 'chronique scandaleuse'), with elements both of allegory and of propagand … [Click Below for Full Description]

Adam Friedrich ZURNER (1679 - 1742)
Incisione in rame, coloritura coeva, in ottime condizioni. Scarce Zurner Map of America -- California shown as an Island. Fine old color example of this scarce map of America, showing California as an island, published by Zurner and engraved by Pieter Schenk. Zurner's map is a fascinating compilation of up to date information and cartographic myths. The main body of North America reflects corrected information, including De L'Isle's treatment of the Mississippi River Valley and the Rio Grande River properly flowing into the Gulf of Mexico. In depicting California as an Island, Zurner uses the Second Sanson model, but makes the Nor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Zweite Ausgabe des ersten englischen Werkes über Optik. - "Molyneux wrote his best-known scientific work, the 'Dioptrica nova', the first treatise on optics published in English. Printed at London in 1692, it was intended as a complete and clear treatise of current optical knowledge independent of any hypothesis concerning the nature of light. Appended to it was Halley's famous theorem for finding the foci of lenses (SS. 295-301). A popular text, it was reprinted in 1709 and provided a scientific base for Berkley's 'Essay Towards a New Theory of Vision'. The book was widely distributed, and Molyneux personally sent copies to Newton, Halley, Locke, Hooke, Boyle, Flamsteed, and Huygens. Its publication ended his friendship with Flamsteed, who according to Molyneux, took umbrage at the lack of prominence accorded his work" (DSB). - Tafeln 39 und 40 doppelt vorhanden. - Papierbedingt stellenweise etwas gebräunt bzw. stockfleckig. A very good copy in contemporary binding. ---- Norman 1020; Wheeler Gift 232; Duveen p.282; Gedeon pp. 92-93. RARE FIRST EDITION OF 'ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT EARLY WORKS ON ELECTRICITY' (Duveen). Hauksbee was indebted to Isaac Newton for some of his theoretical ideas, while the results of his important experiments in electroluminescence, static electricity and capillarity in turn influenced Newton's revisions and additions to the new editions of his Principia and Opticks. Hauksbee was the first to demonstrate the optical effects produced by the passage of electricity through rarified air. "His demonstration of the efficacy of glass in producing frictional electricity opened the way for the work of Gray, Dufay and Franklin, and his discoveries in capillarity influenced Laplace nearly one hundred years later" (Norman). The improved airpump which Hauksbee described and illustrated was based on his discovery of the lateral communication of motion in air. His illustration of the optical effects of the passage of electricity through air was, in Duveen's view, "the starting point of modern researches, X-rays and the constitution of the atom." - Visit our website to see more imag … [Click Below for Full Description]
