ELEONORA MARIA ROSALIA.
Blake, p. 460; Brüning 3466; Schelenz, Gesch. Pharmazie, pp. 515-516. Rare true 1709 edition of an extremely popular "Household apothecary", an encyclopaedia of household medicinal recipes, written by Eleonora Maria Rosalia (1647-1704) in Silesia and Moravia, Herzogin of Troppau and Jägerndorf, with an appended cookery book. First published at Vienna in 1695, the Granat-Apffel went through about twenty editions in the next sixty years. Beginning with the 1697 edition (also published in Vienna), it included a cookery book as an appendix, described as compiled by an unnamed "Hoch-adelichen Persohn". While herbal medicine had often been practiced by (lower-class and noble) women over the centuries, the Renaissance increasingly brought them (and male authors of popular medical books as well) into conflict with the academic physicians and botanists who were developing new scientific methods. Noble women had the education, means and the security to publish books of household medicinal recipes. The Granat-Apffel was one of the most successful. Its numerous editions exerted an enormous influence on the art of healing and cooking for nearly two hundred years. With one or a few mostly marginal worm holes running through much of the book, affecting a few words of text only in a few leaves, with occasional slight browning, a small stain or other minor defect and with faint offsetting on a half-dozen leaves, but otherwise in good condition. The binding is slightly worn and has minor damage to the backstrip, but is otherwise good. An important source for the role of women in 17th-cen … [Click Below for Full Description]

MESNARD Philippe

Monier, woodcut device on title page, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, large folding double-page facsimile, 58 full-page engravings in the pagination (15 double-page), plus several smaller woodcut illustrations; bound with: Librorum De re Diplomatica supplemtetum..., Luteciae-Parisiorum: Caroli Robustel, 1704, pp. viii, 116; woodcut device on title page, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, 8 engraved folding facsimiles and 2 full-page engraved facsimiles in the pagination, 6 smaller engravings and 5 woodcuts in the text; contemporary full calf, gilt-decorated spine, new red morocco label; occasional spots and stains throughout, leaves occasionally wrinkled, some neat restoration at the joints and corners; in all a good, sound, and complete copy. First published in 1681, "this work established the study of diplomatics. Written as a refutation of Daniel Papebroch's questioning of the authority of several of the charters in the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Pres, the work established new principles for the study of documents, and was well received by, amongst others, Colbert and his successor Le Tellier. At the behest of the latter, Louis XIV, sent Mabillon in 1685 to Italy, where he acquired some 3000 books and manuscripts for the royal collection. The Supplementum of 1704 was written in response to the Jesuit Germon's attempt to disprove Mabillon's theories" (Macclesfield 4590).

According to Vicaire, "cette édition est assez estimée". The first edition with Lister's commentaries was printed in London in 1705. This revised edition is edited by Theodor Jansson Almeloveen. The nice frontispiece, which depicts cooking in a kitchen, is signed J. Goeree. The Roman gourmet Marcus Gavius Apicius has supposedly lent his name to this collection of recipes, "Apicius", which has been reprinted numerous times in different versions and revisions. The present edition is annotated by the English physician and scientist Martin Lister (1639-1712). François Xavier Bon (1678-1761) in Montpellier is known for his attempts to make silk out of the cocoons of spiders. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Hill, Aaron
London: for the author and to be sold by John Mayo , 1709, First Edition. Folio –– 35.5 cm. [xxviii], 339 pp. Period style sprinkled calf with de-bossed stamped panel boards, spine in six gilt decorated compartments with gilt-lettered red-oxide morocco label to second, page-edges wavy and uncut. Engraved portrait frontispiece and 7 plates each with facing explanatory leaf, Errata at contents page, pages clean with no prior ownership markings. An excellent copy of the Very Scarce first edition. Aaron Hill was 15 when he visited his distant relative Lord Paget, English ambassador to Constantinople. From Turkey he travelled to Greece, Egypt, Palestine, Jordan and Arabia before returning to England three years later in April 1703 with Paget. "Hill's Ottoman Empire was a luxury publication designed to establish its author's social and literary credentials at nearly 350 pages it was an impressive achievement for a 24-year-old. Hill's primary model was the diplomat Sir Paul Rycaut's Present State of the Ottoman Empire of 1668. He borrows many of Rycaut's observations on the political, institutional, and religious history of the Turks yet he is undoubtedly more interested in projecting himself into the picture as an adventure hero Hill dramatizes himself struggling with knife-wielding Arabs, finally stabbing one to death, going underwater pearl-diving, braving storms and dangerous tempests on his sea journey to Samon and, finally, enduring 'A Strange Accident which befel the Author in a Vault among the Mummys' --Gerrard. Cieza de Leon, Pedro de
London, 1709. [viii]+244+[12] pages with engraved map, folding plan and four engraved illustrations in text and index. Quarto (9 ¾" x 7½") bound in period calf with modern rebacking, original gilt spine leather laid down and ruled gilt edges to cover. Translated by Joh Stevens. First English Edition. This is a highly regarded chronicle of the conquest and colonization of Peru by Spaniards in the latter part of the 16th century and is lauded for its (at the time) objectivity. Cieza de Leon's Chronica was to appear in 4 sections, this translation being the first part only, all that was available of the history until the latter part of the 19th century. Pedro Cieza de León was a Spanish conquistador and chronicler of Peru. He is known primarily for his history and description of Peru, Crónicas del Perú. He wrote this book in four parts, but only the first was published during his lifetime; the remaining sections were not published until the 19th and 20th centuries. Cieza de León was born to a family of Jewish conversos[1] around 1520 in Llerena, a town in southeastern Extremadura, less than 60 mi from Portugal. Although recently converted from Judaism to Catholicism, the family enjoyed good social standing in the region because of their networks and business dealings. His father, Lope de León, was a shopkeeper in the town, and his mother, Leonor de Cazalla, was a native of Llerena. There is scant documentary evidence of the young Cieza de León’s childhood, and little is known of his early life before his voyage to the Americas. Given the fact that he left home at 13, it is unl … [Click Below for Full Description]

MESNARD, Philippe.

VALENTINI, Georg Wilhelm von.
Atabey 1265; cf. Blackmer 1709 note (1828 French ed.). First edition of the French translation of volume 3 (Der Türkenkrieg, 1824) of Die Lehre vom Krieg (1820-1824) by the Prussian general Georg Wilhelm Freiherr von Valentini (1775-1834). Valentini had participated in the war against the French from 1792 to 1794 and had served in Turkey. This part of his book describes the military capacities of the Ottoman Empire and suggests ways to defeat it. With occasional minor foxing, but otherwise in fine condition. The binding has a couple minor scuff marks and slight damage at the foot of the spine, but is otherwise also fine.

Seymour, Gov. John: [Penn vs. Baltimore Dispute]
Maryland, 1709. [6]pp. on folded folio sheets. With transcript. Old fold lines. Bright and clean. Very good plus. An especially noteworthy and very lengthy manuscript letter from John Seymour, governor of the Maryland Colony from 1704 to 1709, to one of the Lords of Trade, detailing the tumult in the colony, namely the conflicting attitudes of Catholics and Protestants, and discussing the developing border dispute between William Penn and Lord Baltimore. Of the Catholics and Protestants, the governor writes in part: "The first by his Lordships favour in lands not only - makes a considerable Interest with many of ye Inhabitants& Delegates, but also gains many Proslites, their Priest being encouraged and supported on all Occasions so that One of them had the Confidense to tamper with One of my Domestiques; and when they checked for these Abuses, the whole party is in a flame, and ready to raise a considerable Contribution for their Defense & Protection & with the extreamest Spite and Malice exclaimed against the severity, as they terme it, of her Majesty's Instructions..." With mention of the Penn-Calvert dispute: "My Lord I should be glad to have her Majesty's Command about running the Northern Lyne of this Province, or to heare my Lord Baltimore and Wm. Penn had adjusted that Difference between themselves...the Borders in both Provinces being hardly restrayned from committing violence on each other...in the mean tyme take the best Care I can to prevent it."
