Braunschweig : Gedruckt durch Johann Georg Zilligern, Hochfürstlich privilegierter Hof Buchdrucker, 1709. 169, 160 und 216 Seiten : Anton Ulrich von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (Porträt von Bernhard Francke) Anton Ulrich von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (* 4. Oktober 1633 in Hitzacker; † 27. [Click Below for Full Description]

William Shakespear [William Shakespeare] and Nicholas Rowe (Editor)
London - Jacob Tonson, 1709. Six volumes of Tonson's dramatic works ofShakespeare. Volumes I-V are in uniform bindings as a set, with the pages trimmed down. Volume VI is bound in a different half calf binding with larger page sizes due to their not being trimmed as closely as volumes I-V. The sixth volume could be trimmed and bound to match. This is the first edition of this work, edited by Nicholas Rowe. It is the first edition of Shakespeare's works to be published in the eighteenth century and has been referred to as the first 'modern' edition of the plays. As stated to the title page of volume I this set was originally published as six volumes as seen here. A seventh volume was published by a different publisher, E Curll, a year later in 1710 whichaddedhis poetry and critical remarks on his plays by C Gildon and is sometimes seen bound together with this set. This set contains all six volumes of Shakespeare's dramatic works edited byRowe and isas originally published. Due to this work, Rowe is widely considered to be the first editor of Shakespeare. His practical knowledge helped him to divide the plays into both scenes and acts, including the entrances and exits of the players. He was also one of the first to prefix each play with a list of the dramatis personae and to write a 'life of the author'. The work is based on the somewhat textually corruptFourth Folio. To volume VI signature A4 under the 'here' of 'where. ' and to volume I signature 'A' under the 'G of Goodness'. This copy is not the lineatim reprint issued in the same year. Virgil, Mr [John] Dryden (Translator)
London-Jacob Tonson, 1709. Book. John Dryden's translation of Virgil's poetical works. The third edition of this popular translation. From the antiquarian library of Christopher Rowe. Christopher Rowe was a schoolmaster in Norwich and then in Bristol. Throughout his career he inspired many to love literature, history and music. He was a specialist on 17th century printer and bookseller, Humphrey Moseley and began his, unfortunately unfinished, PhD dissertation on him. With thirty-three plates to volume I, forty plates to volume II and thirty three plates to volume III. Collated, collation only available for volumes I and III, though as plates are numbered in continuation across all volumes can be assumed volume II is also thereforecomplete. All volumes are complete. John Dryden's translation of Virgil was a national event. It brought Dryden the hefty sum of 1, 400 and was first published by subscription in 1697. Although popular at its time of release, Dryden's translation of Virgil's poetry received some criticism, particularly from Wordsworth. Wordsworth complained that Dryden's descriptions of natural objects were inferior in comparison tothe original Latin. Virgil was an ancient Roman poet of the Augustan period. He wrote three of the mostfamous poems inLatin literature, the Eclogues, Georgics and his epic Aeneid, all of which are translated into English in these three volumes. Condition: In full calf bindings with blind stamped detailing to boards. Externally, worn. Heavy rubbing to the spines and joints of volumes I and III. Patches of slight rubbing to the extremitie … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOERHAAVE, Herman.
Arnold Arboretum I, p. 91; ESTC T130372; Henrey 463; Kuijlen & Wijnands 91. Third edition, with corrections and an expanded index, of Boerhaave's description of the plants in Leiden University's botanical garden. It gives an account of the various species, including the origins of the plants, their names, characteristics and possible medicinal properties. It includes trees, herbs, flowers, mushrooms and marine plants, including cannabis and various American, East Indian and other exotic species. Upon his appointment as professor of medicine and botany at Leiden University in 1709, Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738) automatically became head of the botanical garden. He published his first catalogue of plants, Index plantarum, in 1710, and added more than two thousand species by the second edition in 1720, reflecting Boerhaave's extensive additions to the garden. Although the present work bears Boerhaave's name, it is believed to have been prepared by one of his students with the aid of lecture notes. With a manuscript note in the fore-edge margin of the title-page, referring to the part-two title-page. Lacking the final blank leaf. With very slight browning, but otherwise in very good condition. The hinges are cracked and the spine label and extremities slightly damaged, but the binding is otherwise good. Revised edition of an important botanical catalogue, especially valuable for its insights into Boerhaave's teaching methods.

LABORDE, Alexandre de.
- BAL 1709; Berlin Kat. 3479; Ganay 165; Johnston 731; Millard I, 84 (pp. 221-223); cf. Springer, p. 80. First edition of a beautifully illustrated work containing descriptions and depictions of 29 French castles and their gardens built in the years just before the Revolution, followed by a more practical consideration of making a picturesque garden. It "is an invaluable record of each of the gardens illustrated, and of a type of garden design that has all but disappeared" (Millard). The work was composed by the writer Alexandere de Laborde (1773-1842), son of a prominent banker, after his illustrator Constant Bourgeois began to sketch views of Laborde's estate at Méréville and its surrounding area. Laborde's " melancholic nostalgia and love of nature belong to the last Rousseauian decades before the end of the ancient regime, However, his method is that of post-Revolutionary interest in social and natural conditions. His essay is related to the tendency to discuss social, chronological, and regional backgrounds, and to emphasize regional differences of style" (Millard).Owner's inscription on title-page, half-title foxed and with a few small tears along the edges, and a few occasional spots throughout. A very good copy with wide margins. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities and the spine (especially at the head and foot), but still good.

16 full-page woodcut illus. in the text. 69 folded leaves. Three parts in one. Large 8vo, orig. wrappers (somewhat soiled & rubbed, extremities of wrappers frayed, small hole in first leaf touching two characters), new stitching. Kyoto: Gonbei Yoshinoya, 1709. An early and very rare Japanese edition of one of the most important Chinese texts on acupuncture. Katsu "was a Chinese physician whose years are uncertain but who lived prior to the time of the Ming dynasty. He wrote a book on the introduction of the moxa system into Japan from China, the original Japanese edition of which was published in 1684 with the title Jushikei (or Jushikyo) hakki [Mestler is in error here; there were earlier editions]…A theoretical discussion, by Katsu, chiefly on acupuncture but equally applicable to moxa, not on how to cure but on the more fundamental nature of the subject, comprised the first part of that work. The first part discussed the fundamental belief of the Chinese and Japanese in a relationship between the internal organs and their diseases, and curative treatment for them at specific sites on the outside of the body. The second part, written by an unknown co-author, was subtitled Juishikei ketsu chi-ho and gave practical instruction. Several illustrations in this work show relationships between moxa or acupuncture sites and specific internal organs (e.g. between the hands and the lungs). Two drawings are especially interesting as showing external measurements of the human body, anterior and posterior aspects, referring to differences between lean and fat individuals and the inf … [Click Below for Full Description]

ELEONORA MARIA ROSALIA.
- Blake, p. 460; Brüning 3466; Schelenz, Gesch. Pharmazie, pp. 515-516. Rare true 1709 edition of an extremely popular "Household apothecary", an encyclopaedia of household medicinal recipes, written by Eleonora Maria Rosalia (1647-1704) in Silesia and Moravia, Herzogin of Troppau and Jägerndorf, with an appended cookery book. First published at Vienna in 1695, the Granat-Apffel went through about twenty editions in the next sixty years. Beginning with the 1697 edition (also published in Vienna), it included a cookery book as an appendix, described as compiled by an unnamed "Hoch-adelichen Persohn". While herbal medicine had often been practiced by (lower-class and noble) women over the centuries, the Renaissance increasingly brought them (and male authors of popular medical books as well) into conflict with the academic physicians and botanists who were developing new scientific methods. Noble women had the education, means and the security to publish books of household medicinal recipes. The Granat-Apffel was one of the most successful. Its numerous editions exerted an enormous influence on the art of healing and cooking for nearly two hundred years. With one or a few mostly marginal worm holes running through much of the book, affecting a few words of text only in a few leaves, with occasional slight browning, a small stain or other minor defect and with faint offsetting on a half-dozen leaves, but otherwise in good condition. The binding is slightly worn and has minor damage to the backstrip, but is otherwise good. An important source for the role of women in 17th-centur … [Click Below for Full Description]
