A proposal to man the Navy Royal of Great Britain, and raise a nursery for sea-men; which will, 1. Save and get to Her Majesty £300,000 per annum, or thereabouts, during this, or any other war. 2. Save and get to the merchants, during this, or any other war, £500,000 per annum at least, and preserve many of Her ships from perishing. 3. Gain to the nation in general, over and above what is before mentioned, about £200,000 per annum. No man will be a loser, most men gainers: he that hath most land will get most; and where there is now one sailor a scholar, this will make twenty. In some cases, poor men will be great gainers. 4. Proceed all by encouragement, without violence, in the most pleasing manner, and will fill the Navy with the best of sailors, when once it is put in practice. 5. The longer the War continues, the better, and more seamen it will raise, sufficient to man all the ships belonging to Great Britain and its territories. Humbly dedicated to the Lord High Admiral of Great Britai

London: printed, and are to be sold by John Morphew. 1709. 4to., (4) + 28pp., foremargins of several text leaves cropped or cut close with loss or partial loss of last letter of each line on several leaves, some headlines and catchwords also shaved with loss, the sense nowhere compromised however, well bound in mid-20th century black half roan over marbled boards, spine gilt lettered. Only edition. An interesting proposal for a 'soft' or liberal approach to recruiting boys (and men) to the Royal Navy without recourse to the use of the press gang. The author was the chaplain on H.M.S. Lyme, a 20-gun 6th rate ship launched in 1695.

(København), 1709. Folio. In contemporary full calf Cambridge-style binding with blindstamped borders. Light wear to extremities. Seven leaves with minor repairs to margins, one leaf with a 15 cm long closed tear, and one leaf with an 30 cm long closed tear, all professionally executed and with no loss of imprint. Margins slightly soiled. 19 leaves, -text and frames engraved. The broad frames that all differ from each other ornamentally depict animals and plants as well as the different trades of the country. A nice copy printed on thick, heavy paper. Housed in a cardboard box.Provenance: From the collection of Danish book collector Viggo Lohse. The present copy was exhibited at 'Dansk Bibliofil-Klubs 50 års Jubilæumsudstilling' in 1992 (The 50 year anniversary exhibition for the Danish Society of Bibliophiles), no. 94. First edition of this landmark work of Danish book production and the constitution of the Danish absolute monarchy. The Royal Law established the absolute right of the Monarch to rule, and it defined the line of royal succession. It was more rigorous than the other monarchal laws of Europe at the time. The text which is written by Peder Griffenfeld is engraved in copper throughout, in order to prevent the possibility of re-printing, pirated editions and text-counterfeiting. Frederik Rostgaard, the King's state archivist who was famous for his excellent taste in books, was in charge of the editing and issuing of the work. In front of the actual law text a leaf is inserted with the portrait of King Frederik III on his horse, and everything, except for the head of the king which was engraved after his death-mask, is executed in the beloved flourishing- or scroll- manner of the time. The titles and the text are engraved throughout by Michael Røg.

A collection of the several statutes and parts of statutes now in force, relating to High treason, and misprision of high treason.

London: Pr. by Charles Bill, & the Executrix of Thomas Newcomb, 1709. 12mo (15.5 cm; 6.125"). 113, [1] pp., [7] ff.; 44 pp., [2] ff. Publication of this treatise on high treason followed hard on the heels of the Treason Act 1708 (7 Ann c 21), by which Parliament "harmonized" the laws of high treason in "Great Britain" following the union in 1707 of England and Scotland, each of which had different and sometimes quite distinct concepts of "high treason."    The final part of this small volume bears a title-page reading "A form and method of trial of commoners, in cases of high treason, and misprision of high treason," with the same imprint information at the main title. (A woman tried and convicted, seeking a stay of execution because pregnant, may pray "a Jury of [12] Matrons or Motherly Women" confirm and attest the same; other data are equally particular and evocative.) While the pagination and signature markings of this final part are not continuous from A collection of several statutes, it is clear that the "two" were printed as a whole and are not separate works, although they are sometimes catalogued as if they were and are even sometimes sold as such.    Printed mostly in roman type with some italic, this has headings in gothic and some long passages also in gothic.    Provenance: 18th-century ownership signatures at top of main title-page of J.W. Tarleton and J. Skynner (both lined through), and 19th-century signature of Wm. Saunders. Oldham Free Public Library (Lancs.) stamp on verso of same.         ESTC T136807; Sweet & Maxwell 12.Ia.6 and 12.Ia.10. Late 20th-century quarter brown calf with brown stone-pattern marbled paper sides; all edges gilt. Slim waterstain in upper margin of last four leaves; same leaves foxed. Overall a very good copy.

Contemporary tanned sheepskin.

Blake, p. 460; Brüning 3466; Schelenz, Gesch. Pharmazie, pp. 515-516. Rare true 1709 edition of an extremely popular "Household apothecary", an encyclopaedia of household medicinal recipes, written by Eleonora Maria Rosalia (1647-1704) in Silesia and Moravia, Herzogin of Troppau and Jägerndorf, with an appended cookery book. First published at Vienna in 1695, the Granat-Apffel went through about twenty editions in the next sixty years. Beginning with the 1697 edition (also published in Vienna), it included a cookery book as an appendix, described as compiled by an unnamed "Hoch-adelichen Persohn". While herbal medicine had often been practiced by (lower-class and noble) women over the centuries, the Renaissance increasingly brought them (and male authors of popular medical books as well) into conflict with the academic physicians and botanists who were developing new scientific methods. Noble women had the education, means and the security to publish books of household medicinal recipes. The Granat-Apffel was one of the most successful. Its numerous editions exerted an enormous influence on the art of healing and cooking for nearly two hundred years. With one or a few mostly marginal worm holes running through much of the book, affecting a few words of text only in a few leaves, with occasional slight browning, a small stain or other minor defect and with faint offsetting on a half-dozen leaves, but otherwise in good condition. The binding is slightly worn and has minor damage to the backstrip, but is otherwise good. An important source for the role of women in 17th-century medical practice.

Originalet utgavs postumt i Haag 1708. London [printed in the Netherlands], "sumptibus Societatis" [the Royal Society?], 1738. 2 volumes bound as 1. Large 12mo. 18th-century calf, gold-tooled spine.

      - Arnold Arboretum I, p. 91; ESTC T130372; Henrey 463; Kuijlen & Wijnands 91. Third edition, with corrections and an expanded index, of Boerhaave's description of the plants in Leiden University's botanical garden. It gives an account of the various species, including the origins of the plants, their names, characteristics and possible medicinal properties. It includes trees, herbs, flowers, mushrooms and marine plants, including cannabis and various American, East Indian and other exotic species. Upon his appointment as professor of medicine and botany at Leiden University in 1709, Herman Boerhaave (1668-1738) automatically became head of the botanical garden. He published his first catalogue of plants, Index plantarum, in 1710, and added more than two thousand species by the second edition in 1720, reflecting Boerhaave's extensive additions to the garden. Although the present work bears Boerhaave's name, it is believed to have been prepared by one of his students with the aid of lecture notes. With a manuscript note in the fore-edge margin of the title-page, referring to the part-two title-page. Lacking the final blank leaf. With very slight browning, but otherwise in very good condition. The hinges are cracked and the spine label and extremities slightly damaged, but the binding is otherwise good. Revised edition of an important botanical catalogue, especially valuable for its insights into Boerhaave's teaching methods.

A collection of the several statutes and parts of statutes now in force, relating to High treason, and misprision of high treason.

Pr. by Charles Bill, & the Executrix of Thomas Newcomb, 1709.

Adeisidaemon sive Titus Livius a superstitione vindicatus. Annexae sunt Origines Judaicae.

Thomas Johnson, 1709 - Hagae-Comitis (La Hague), Thomas Johnson, 1709. In 8 de 18 ff. n. ch. A Treatise Shewing, That there is nothing in the Gospel Contrary to Reason, Nor Above It: And that no Christian Doctrine can be properly called A Mystery'' (1696), ''Life of Milton'' (1698), ''Letters to Serena'' (1704), ''Pantheisticon, sive formula celebrandae sodalitatis socraticae'' (1720). Il traduisit également Giordano Bruno. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Hill was only 15 when he was sent by his grandmother to visit his distant relative Lord Paget, English ambassador to Constantinople. From Turkey he travelled to Greece, Egypt, Palestine, Jordan and Arabia before returning to England three years later in April 1703 with Paget. "Hill's Ottoman Empire was a luxury publication designed to establish its author's social and literary credentials at nearly 350 pages it was an impressive achievement for a 24–year-old. Hill's primary model was the diplomat Sir Paul Rycaut's Present State of the Ottoman Empire of 1668. He borrows many of Rycaut's observations on the political, institutional, and religious history of the Turks yet he is undoubtedly more interested in projecting himself into the picture as an adventure hero Hill dramatizes himself struggling with knife-wielding Arabs, finally stabbing one to death, going underwater pearl-diving, braving storms and dangerous tempests on his sea journey to Samon and, finally, enduring 'A Strange Accident which befel the Author in a Vault among the Mummys'" (Gerrard, Aaron Hill: The Muses' Projector, 1685–1750, p. 22). Complete copies are genuinely scarce in commerce, with just three seen at auction in the last 30 years. Atabey 580; Arcadian Library 16882; Blackmer 817 for the second edition (1710); not in Burrell.         The Works of Mr William Shakespear

London - Jacob Tonson 1709 - Six volumes of Tonson's dramatic works ofShakespeare. Volumes I-V are in uniform bindings as a set, with the pages trimmed down. Volume VI is bound in a different half calf binding with larger page sizes due to their not being trimmed as closely as volumes I-V. The sixth volume could be trimmed and bound to match. This is the first edition of this work, edited by Nicholas Rowe. It is the first edition of Shakespeare's works to be published in the eighteenth century and has been referred to as the first 'modern' edition of the plays. As stated to the title page of volume I this set was originally published as six volumes as seen here. A seventh volume was published by a different publisher, E Curll, a year later in 1710 whichaddedhis poetry and critical remarks on his plays by C Gildon and is sometimes seen bound together with this set. This set contains all six volumes of Shakespeare's dramatic works edited byRowe and isas originally published. Due to this work, Rowe is widely considered to be the first editor of Shakespeare. His practical knowledge helped him to divide the plays into both scenes and acts, including the entrances and exits of the players. He was also one of the first to prefix each play with a list of the dramatis personae and to write a 'life of the author'. The work is based on the somewhat textually corruptFourth Folio. To volume VI signature A4 under the 'here' of 'where. ' and to volume I signature 'A' under the 'G of Goodness'. This copy is not the lineatim reprint issued in the same year. [ESTC T138296]Rowe basing his edition on the Fourth Folio paved the way for eighteenth century editors of Shakespeare, as subsequently they tended to use theFourth Folio as their basis. This includes Alexander Pope. Jacob Tonson was an eighteenth-century English bookseller and publisher best known for having obtained a copyright on the plays of William Shakespeare by buying the rights of the heirs of the publisher of the Fourth Folio after the Statue of Anne came into effect, the first statute to provide for copyright regulated by the government rather than private partiesEach play has a separate title page with the imprint 'printed in the year 1709'Volume I The Tempest, Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Measure for Measure, The Comedy of Errors, Much AdoAbout Nothing, Love's Labour's Lost. Volume II: A Midsummer Night's Dream, Merchant of Venice, As You Like It, Taming of the Shrew, All's Well that Ends Well, Twelfth night, The Winter's TaleVolume III: King John, King Richard II, King Henry IV Part I, Henry IV Part II, King Henry V, King Henry VI Part I, King Henry VI Part II. Esemplare nitido. Assai raro. Cat. Platneriana, pag.361; Mira II, pag.50; Narbone II, pag.52.

The Works of Mr William Shakespear

London - Jacob Tonson, 1709 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. Six volumes of Tonson's dramatic works ofShakespeare.
