The Tryal of Dr. Henry Sacheverell, Before the House of Peers, for High Crimes and Misdemeanours; Upon an Impeachment by the Knights, Citizens and Burgesses in Parliament Assembled , in the Name of themselves, and of all the Commons of Great Britain:

Begun in Westminster Hall the 27th Day of February /10; and from thence continu'd by several Adjournments until the 23d Day of March following London: Published by Order of the House of Peers Printed for Jacob Tonson 1710 First edition 1709 - folio, [4],327 [i.e.335],[1]p. This first edition is identified by title-page spellings of "continu’d" and "adjournments" as well as pagination. With an initial imprimatur leaf. The versos of pp. 77-84 are unpaginated. Some very light occasional spots, etc, bound in contemporary panelled calf, professionally and tastefully rebacked and extreme corner tips touched up, decorated spine in compartments with contrasting title label. A VG copy of the scarce first edition in a decent binding. "This folio edition was printed for members of the Houses only, an octavo edition being in preparation for public sale." (Madan/Speck). [ Maden/Speck 465; ESTC T152340]. Henry Sacheverell (1674-1724) was a popular preacher at Oxford University. His controversial printed sermons attracted attention in London. In 1709 he became chaplain at St Saviour’s in Southwark. In November of that year he made his most contentious speech to date, attacking Catholics and dissenters by comparing the Gunpowder Plot to the execution of Charles I. Despite an order banning the printing of the sermon by the Lord Mayor he independently published it prompting the Whig government to take action. Articles of impeachment for high crimes and misdemeanours were drawn up, to which Sacheverell gave an uncompromising reply. The trial began in Westminster Hall on 27 February 1710. As the case began there were riots on the streets and several chapels were attacked, confirming the Government's viewpoint that Sacheverell had encouraged violence. The rioting in turn led to the downfall of the government ministry later that year and the passing of the Riot Act in 1714. Despite a well executed defence, Sacheverell was found guilty although his sentence was lenient; he was prevented from preaching for three years. Black Rod would have attended trials in Westminster Hall, such as that of Henry Sacherevell. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Enchiridion Studiosi

Utrecht: at the shop of Gulielmum Broedelet,, 1709. Arabice. Octavo in half-sheets (155 × 95 mm). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title to spine in black ink, red speckled edges. Text in Latin and Arabic. Engraved printer's device to title page, 8 woodcut figurative initials and 5 similar floral headpieces to the text. Boards and spine very slightly rubbed and marked, minor tear with no loss of text to signature E, very small black ink-stain to K2, occasional faint damp-staining to bottom edge, very small number of faint spots as usual. An excellent copy. Rare editio princeps of Zarnuji's Ta'lim al-muta'allim - Tariq al-ta'allum (The Instruction of the Student - The Path of Learning), a medieval Arabic manual on study-skills; this copy from the library of Guillaume Frederic Pijper (1893-1988), noted University of Leiden Arabist, with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Pedagogical treatises first appeared in the Islamic world perhaps as early as the 9th century with texts such as the Kitab al-Mu'allimin of al-Jahiz and Ibn Sahnun's Adab al-Mu'allimin. However, knowledge of these works took much longer to reach Europe than the Ta'lim al-muta'allim, with a Latin translation by the Maronite Abraham Ecchellensis (al-Haqilani) published in Paris in 1646 as Semita sapientiæ, sive ad scientias. Towards the end of the century, Joseph Banesis (al-Bani), another Maronite studying in Rome at the college established by Pope Gregory XIII in 1584, assisted Danish scholar Frederic Rostgaard in preparing a new translation. Both of these renderings are collected in the present volume with additional notes by the editor, Adriaan Reland, and, for the first time, the original Arabic text. Reland (1676-1718) was a Dutch orientalist best remembered for his important work De Religione Mohammedanica (Utrecht, 1705), one of the first European attempts at an impartial study of Islam. Of Zarnuji himself little is known except a possible date of death (1223) and that he was a Hanafi jurist originally from Persia. Much of his advice here is quaintly prosaic, suggesting "that a serious student should always have a book in his sleeve and furthermore that the book should have some blank pages so that he might copy down anything worthwhile he comes across", that a student should obey his teacher, and so forth (Encyclopaedia Iranica). Yet he is evidently writing within a distinctly Islamic frame of reference in passages emphasising right motive (niyah) and the like - passages apparently reflecting the influence of texts such as Fatihat al-'Ulum (The Opening of the Sciences) by great Muslim theologian al-Ghazali (d. 1111) (see Totah, The Contribution of the Arabs to Learning, p. 86).

(Weil, 32/141) An English Language edition was done by Edmund Stone in 1823 and reprinted several times since. Bion was the Royal Engineer of mathematical instruments. "The 'Traite de la construction ... des instruments mathematiques' gives a fairly complete list of instruments normally constructed during the first quarter of the eighteenth century...some of the instruments described by Bion - such as astrolabes, marine astrolabes, the jacob staff, and the Davis quadrant - were no longer used ... All of his treatises were more for the user and the amateur than for the manufacturer." While well known in his time (partly because of the treatises he published as well as the instruments he made), few of Bion's instruments survive today. (DSB 1/2, p 132-33) Title (google translate): "Deals with construction and the Main uses of Mathematical Instruments With the necessary figures for the understanding of this Treaty. Dedicated to His Royal Highness, The Duke Bishop D'Orleans" Only the 1725 Paris edition found in the Printed Catalogues of the Library of the Royal Astronomical Society (Luther, Martino:2006).

Full calf binding with red spine label, raised bands and gilt decorations. Light rubbing to leather, stain to front leather lower right. Speckled edges. Full leather. A first edition of this collector favorite that went through five editions. Many beautifully illustrated plates (27 finely engraved plates plus an additional map plate). "The best illustrated account of the scientific instruments in use at the beginning of the XVIIIth centry, including the compass of proportion, surveying and astronomical instruments, the micrometer, a machine showing solar and lunar eclipses, etc. The whole of the VIIth [section] is on the construction and use of instruments for Navigation, includ. sea charts." (Weil, 32/141) An English Language edition was done by Edmund Stone in 1823 and reprinted several times since.

Aernout van Overbeke (1632-1674) was a wag. His Verses , which later on came to include his travelogue, were reprinted numerous times. The tenth edition appeared in 1719. His travel account is not based on a diary, as most of them are, but written in the epistolary style instead. Van Overbeke's 'letters' are helter-skelter, they allude to memories, contain allusions and double-entendres, they are larded with Latin quotations, and never stops showing how witty he is (Nieuwenhuys, Mirror of the Indies, p.19).Landwehr, VOC, 1540; Du Perron, De muze van Jan Companjie, p.69.

Zweite Ausgabe des ersten englischen Werkes über Optik.- "Molyneux wrote his best-known scientific work, the 'Dioptrica nova', the first treatise on optics published in English. Printed at London in 1692, it was intended as a complete and clear treatise of current optical knowledge independent of any hypothesis concerning the nature of light. Appended to it was Halley's famous theorem for finding the foci of lenses (SS. 295-301). A popular text, it was reprinted in 1709 and provided a scientific base for Berkley's 'Essay Towards a New Theory of Vision'. The book was widely distributed, and Molyneux personally sent copies to Newton, Halley, Locke, Hooke, Boyle, Flamsteed, and Huygens. Its publication ended his friendship with Flamsteed, who according to Molyneux, took umbrage at the lack of prominence accorded his work" (DSB). - Tafeln 39 und 40 doppelt vorhanden. - Papierbedingt stellenweise etwas gebräunt bzw. stockfleckig.         Discourses of the Ecclesiastical and Civil Polity of the Jews

1709. An Important Source of Information About Jewish Law and Custom in Seventeenth-Century England Abendana, Isaac [1650-1720]. Discourses of the Ecclesiastical and Civil Polity of the Jews. Viz. Of Their Courts of Judicature. Laws Concerning Tithes. Institution of the Priesthood. Their Liturgy. Their Schools. Their Feasts, Fasts, Coins, Weights, and Measures. Written by Isaac Abendana, A Learned Jew. Being Very Useful for Divines of all Perswasions. London: Printed for Samuel Ballard, 1709. [viii], 100 [i.e.200] pp. Octavo (6-1/2" x 3-3/4"). Contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled boards with later rebacking, front free endpaper and rear endleaves renewed, speckled edges. Moderate rubbing to boards and extremities, some chipping to spine ends, corners bumped, rear hinge starting, crack in text block between pp. 196 and 197. Moderate toning to text, faint dampspotting in a few places. Later annotations in pencil to rear endleaf, interior otherwise clean. Ex-library. Bookplate to front pastedown. A nice copy of a scarce title, very few copies of this edition in North America. * Second and final edition, a reissue of the first edition with a cancel title page. Born in Spain, Abendana, a member of the Sephardic community, was hakam (local rabbi) of the Spanish Portuguese Synagogue in London. He also pursued an academic career. He taught Hebrew at Cambridge University and went on to join the faculty of Magdalen College, Oxford. A prolific writer, he was England's authority on Jewish religion, culture and law. This reputation was due in part to his annual Oxford Almanack. In addition to the expected almanac topics, each issue contained information about Jewish customs, laws and other matters. The Discourses collect the Jewish-related material from his almanacs. Counting both editions, OCLC locates 4 copies in North American law libraries (at the Library of Congress, New York University and UC-Berkeley, which have the first edition, and Harvard, which has the second). English Short-Title Catalogue T32015.
