A nice copy of a scarce title, very few copies of this edition in North America. * Second and final edition, a reissue of the first edition with a cancel title page. Born in Spain, Abendana, a member of the Sephardic community, was hakam (local rabbi) of the Spanish Portuguese Synagogue in London. He also pursued an academic career. He taught Hebrew at Cambridge University and went on to join the faculty of Magdalen College, Oxford. A prolific writer, he was England's authority on Jewish religion, culture and law. This reputation was due in part to his annual Oxford Almanack. In addition to the expected almanac topics, each issue contained information about Jewish customs, laws and other matters. The Discourses collect the Jewish-related material from his almanacs. Counting both editions, OCLC locates 4 copies in North American law libraries (at the Library of Congress, New York University and UC-Berkeley, which have the first edition, and Harvard, which has the second).         The Forgiving Husband and Adulteress Wife: Or, a Seasonable Present to the Unhappy Pair In Fanchurch-Street

London: H. Hills, in Black-fryars, near the Water-side, 1709. First edition. Wrappers. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing of this notable Poem in the Publisher's original wrappers and printed on laid paper (pages foxed, some chipping to the spine, tiny tear to the front wrapper's top edge, a few tiny corner chips, two small ink corrections to the text on page three, a small marignal bracket mark to the margin of page three and of page ten, pages with expected toning), printed and issued during the Reign of Queen Anne and in the same year that Samuel Johnson was born. Comprised of twelve pages, including the wrappers, this small pamphlet presents a single poem, presented in the form of a dialogue between the wife and her cuckolded husband. The rear wrapper presents "Moral Reflections on the forgoing Dialogue", also given in a poetic form. While published anonymously, the poem was the work of Edward "Ned" Ward, a prolific satirical and travel writer who also worked as a publican best known as the author of The London Spy -- which he described as a "complete survey" of the London scene. The copy herein described is a remarkable survivor on an exceedingly scarce to rare item. A Very Good copy. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE TO RARE.

This treatise on love in its Christian / religious and its profane aspects is replete with classical, biblical and later references. The dedicatee, D. Francisco de Bragança (1691-1742), third son of D. Pedro II and his second wife, D. Maria Sofia of Neuburg, was a somewhat infamous character who broke completely with the royal family in 1715. Might this be a reason for the rarity of the present work?Included in the preliminary matter are several Baroque poems. Jeronymo Osorio de Castro, a fidalgo attached to the royal house and knight of the Order of Christ provides a sonnet and a @decima in praise of D. Francisco. The Rev. Antonio Pessoa de Andrade, conigo at the Cathedral of Guarda and Commissario do Santo Officio, wrote a neo-Latin epigram and two @decimas. Dr. Francisco Duram Mexia, Ouvidor do Crato, composed a sonnet in praise of the author. The Monteverde copy had on one of its endleaves a note by J.L. Not located in Innocêncio. Monteverde 3821 (collation agrees with our copy).

Cologne: Pierre Marteau, 1709 A very good early copy of this work, first published in 1685. 3 volumes in 2 with 4 engraved plates, 2 of which are folding. Mr Dellon, a physician, left France in 1668 travelling the coast of Malabar and practicing medicine. He was arrested by the Inquisition and sent for trial in Goa in 1674, suffering 2 years of imprisonment and torture, before being sentenced to 5 years in the galleys. Luckily he was released at the start of this sentence. His detailed account of the Inquisition has apparently been found to be accurate and provides a rare contemporary description of an Auto da Fe, and particularly interesting insights on the fate of the Portuguese New Christians. In contemporary speckled calf bindings with elaborately gilt tooled spines with raised bands and title and volume labels. Red page edges. The bindings have wear to top and bottom of the spine and spine joints, and corners, but are sound and in good to very good condition. Marbled endpapers with large bookplate of Bath reference library. The books were donated in 1920 by Mrs Miles, the widow of Colonel Samuel Barrett Miles, in memory of her husband. Also a small bookplate of Librairie Ecclesiastique. There are small blind stamped library marks at various points but these are not particularly noticeable. Library notes and ink signature of Colonel Miles to reverse of feps. Text with decorative head and tailpieces. Vol I: blank; title page; Dedication 8pp; Preface 9pp; Errata 1p; Text pp 1-476; 2 blanks; e/ps. Paper has light brown toning, more noticeable on some sections than others, but generally very good condition. Vol II: 2 blanks; title page; 4 plates (2 folding) with blind stamps; text - Relation de l"Inquisition pp 1-249; Table de Chapitres 10pp; title page Histoire des Dieux qu'adorent des gentils des Indes avec une addition considerable a l'histoire de l'Inquisition de Goa Tome Troisieme; Table de Chapitres 2pp; text pp 1-270 including list of names of those released from the Inquisition. A rare set with interesting provenance - Colonel Miles was a diplomat - his notes were published posthumously by his wife as 'The Countries and Tribes of the Persian Gulf' in 1919.
