Amsterdam, Jan ten Hoorn, 1709.Sm.8vo. Contemporary vellum. With engraved portrait of the author by H. Cause and several woodcut tailpieces. (14), 272,47 pp. First published in Amsterdam in 1678. - Including: Geestige en vermaekelijke reysbeschryving .. naer Oostindien uytgevaren voor Raed van Justitie, in den jare 1668. Aernout van Overbeke (1632-1674) was a wag. His Verses , which later on came to include his travelogue, were reprinted numerous times. The tenth edition appeared in 1719. His travel account is not based on a diary, as most of them are, but written in the epistolary style instead. Van Overbeke's 'letters' are helter-skelter, they allude to memories, contain allusions and double-entendres, they are larded with Latin quotations, and never stops showing how witty he is (Nieuwenhuys, Mirror of the Indies, p.19).Landwehr, VOC, 1540; Du Perron, De muze van Jan Companjie, p.69.

Zweite Ausgabe des ersten englischen Werkes über Optik.- "Molyneux wrote his best-known scientific work, the 'Dioptrica nova', the first treatise on optics published in English. Printed at London in 1692, it was intended as a complete and clear treatise of current optical knowledge independent of any hypothesis concerning the nature of light. Appended to it was Halley's famous theorem for finding the foci of lenses (SS. 295-301). A popular text, it was reprinted in 1709 and provided a scientific base for Berkley's 'Essay Towards a New Theory of Vision'. The book was widely distributed, and Molyneux personally sent copies to Newton, Halley, Locke, Hooke, Boyle, Flamsteed, and Huygens. Its publication ended his friendship with Flamsteed, who according to Molyneux, took umbrage at the lack of prominence accorded his work" (DSB). - Tafeln 39 und 40 doppelt vorhanden. - Papierbedingt stellenweise etwas gebräunt bzw. stockfleckig. Ein Blatt mit kleinem Ausriss im unteren weißen Rand, sonst gut erhalten. - DSB 9, 464 Scarce second edition of the first treatise on optics published in English. - Bound in recent half calf. Viz. Of Their Courts of Judicature. Laws Concerning Tithes. Institution of the Priesthood. Their Liturgy. Their Schools. Their Feasts, Fasts, Coins, Weights, and Measures. Written by Isaac Abendana, A Learned Jew. Being Very Useful for Divines of all Perswasions. London: Printed for Samuel Ballard, 1709. [viii], 100 [i.e.200] pp. Octavo (6-1/2" x 3-3/4"). Contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled boards with later rebacking, front free endpaper and rear endleaves renewed, speckled edges. Moderate rubbing to boards and extremities, some chipping to spine ends, corners bumped, rear hinge starting, crack in text block between pp. 196 and 197. Moderate toning to text, faint dampspotting in a few places. Later annotations in pencil to rear endleaf, interior otherwise clean. Ex-library. Bookplate to front pastedown. A nice copy of a scarce title, very few copies of this edition in North America. * Second and final edition, a reissue of the first edition with a cancel title page. Born in Spain, Abendana, a member of the Sephardic community, was hakam (local rabbi) of the Spanish Portuguese Synagogue in London. He also pursued an academic career. He taught Hebrew at Cambridge University and went on to join the faculty of Magdalen College, Oxford. A prolific writer, he was England's authority on Jewish religion, culture and law. This reputation was due in part to his annual Oxford Almanack. In addition to the expected almanac topics, each issue contained information about Jewish customs, laws and other matters. The Discourses collect the Jewish-related material from his almanacs. Counting both editions, OCLC locates 4 copies in North American law libraries (at the Library of Congress, New York University and UC-Berkeley, which have the first edition, and Harvard, which has the second).       Printed for John Morphew and J. Woodward. Second edition of the first part; first edition of the second part.. Water-stain to the front board and spine of volume 1; edges a little rubbed; very good copies.. McBurney 45a. Part I first appeared in May 1709, with this second edition in July; part II (here in first edition) was published in October. 2 vols, 8vo, contemporary Cambridge-style calf, small hand-lettered paper spine labels. The bindings are similar in style, but not identical. Engraved frontis in volume 2 (none called for in 1). A scandalous roman à clef about amatory and other adventures of the upper classes. Undaunted by serving time in jail for writing her novel, Manley soon completed a second part and an equally scandalous Memoirs of Europe (1709), all three anonymously written under the guise of translation. Secret Memoirs became one of the most famous books of its kind and went through numerous editions in the first half of the 18th century. Ms. Manley?s attempt to pillory those of rank left few unscathed: on the rear blanks and free endpaper of volume 1 are contemporary ink notations, identifying over 80 characters in the text by name and page number.

The Forgiving Husband and Adulteress Wife: Or, a Seasonable Present to the Unhappy Pair In Fanchurch-Street

London: H. Hills, in Black-fryars, near the Water-side, 1709. First edition. Wrappers. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing of this notable Poem in the Publisher's original wrappers and printed on laid paper (pages foxed, some chipping to the spine, tiny tear to the front wrapper's top edge, a few tiny corner chips, two small ink corrections to the text on page three, a small marignal bracket mark to the margin of page three and of page ten, pages with expected toning), printed and issued during the Reign of Queen Anne and in the same year that Samuel Johnson was born. Comprised of twelve pages, including the wrappers, this small pamphlet presents a single poem, presented in the form of a dialogue between the wife and her cuckolded husband. The rear wrapper presents "Moral Reflections on the forgoing Dialogue", also given in a poetic form. While published anonymously, the poem was the work of Edward "Ned" Ward, a prolific satirical and travel writer who also worked as a publican best known as the author of The London Spy -- which he described as a "complete survey" of the London scene. The copy herein described is a remarkable survivor on an exceedingly scarce to rare item. A Very Good copy. EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE TO RARE.

This treatise on love in its Christian / religious and its profane aspects is replete with classical, biblical and later references. The dedicatee, D. Francisco de Bragança (1691-1742), third son of D. Pedro II and his second wife, D. Maria Sofia of Neuburg, was a somewhat infamous character who broke completely with the royal family in 1715. Might this be a reason for the rarity of the present work?Included in the preliminary matter are several Baroque poems. Jeronymo Osorio de Castro, a fidalgo attached to the royal house and knight of the Order of Christ provides a sonnet and a @decima in praise of D. Francisco. The Rev. Antonio Pessoa de Andrade, conigo at the Cathedral of Guarda and Commissario do Santo Officio, wrote a neo-Latin epigram and two @decimas. Dr. Francisco Duram Mexia, Ouvidor do Crato, composed a sonnet in praise of the author. The Monteverde copy had on one of its endleaves a note by J.L. Not located in Innocêncio. Monteverde 3821 (collation agrees with our copy).
