[Click Below for Full Description]

Antique print, titled: 'Carte de L'Empire de Japon ( ).' - Map of the Empire of Japan. Centered on the Bay of Osaka, this map covers from Hirado (here identified as I. Firando) and Nagasaki to Akita (Aquita), to include most of Tokugawa (Edo) Era Japan. The island of Hokkaido is not included in this map. Various towns, harbors, bays, provinces, mountains and daimyo are noted, although many are speculative. Engraving / etching on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Jacques-Nicolas Bellin' after an anonymous artist. Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703 - 1772) was one of the most important cartographers of the 18th century. With a career spanning some 50 years, Bellin is best understood as geographe de cabinet and transitional mapmaker spanning the gap between 18th and early 19th century cartographic styles. His long career as Hydrographer and Ingénieur Hydrographe at the French Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine resulted in hundreds of high quality nautical charts of practically everywhere in the world. A true child of the Enlightenment Era, Bellin's work focuses on function and accuracy tending in the process to be less decorative than the earlier 17th and 18th century cartographic work. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Bellin was always careful to cite his references and his scholarly corpus consists of over 1400 articles on geography prepared for Diderot's Encyclopedie. Bellin, despite his extraordinary success, may not have enjoyed his work, which is described as "long, unpleasant, and hard." In addition to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Antique Map, titled: 'Regni Mexicani seu Nova Hispaniae Ludovicianus, N. Angliae, Carolinae, Virginiae et Pensylvaniae ( ).' - This superb map covers the region from the Great Lakes and Nova Scotia through Central America, the Caribbean and Venezuela, and from New Mexico (naming Taos and Santa Fe) to the eastern seaboard. The map is based largely on Delisle's map of 1703 (Carte du Mexique et de la Floride), depicting the social, political, and economic outcomes from the War of the Spanish Succession, also known as Queen Anne's War. The British colonies are shown confined east of the Appalachians and extending south almost to St. Augustine, deep into Spanish-claimed territory. The map itself is filled with settlement place names, Indian tribes and villages. In present-day Texas, Corpus Christi and El Paso (el passo) are noted. Sea routes of treasure fleets from Vera Cruz and Cartagena to Havana and Spain are outlined. Richly embellished, a fine title cartouche depicts two native figures with items to trade, such as hides and blankets. In the Atlantic, there is a large scene of extensive gold mining operations, with Indians bringing their treasures to fill the Europeans' chest. Off the Pacific coast of Mexico is yet another opulent engraving of a raging sea battle, reminiscent of the battles fought in Queen Anne's War. Engraving / etching with contemporary hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Homann Heirs' after an anonymous artist. [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: J. Boudot, 1703. [8],52,[4],21,[1]pp. plus forty engraved plates. Titlepage vignette. Quarto. Contemporary French mottled calf, spine richly gilt, raised bands, gilt leather label, a.e.g. Spine rubbed with some gilt flaking, spine ends expertly repaired. Old stain in fore- and upper edge of text and plates. Some foxing. A good copy. An important work of American botany by one of the outstanding early investigators of Caribbean plants. Father Charles Plumier (1646-1704) was a monk of the order of St. Francesco di Paula. Called "an important botanical traveller" by Hunt, he was a close friend and associate of the great botanist, Tournefort, before turning his attention to the Caribbean. He made at least two trips to the French Antilles and in 1693 published DESCRIPTION DES PLANTES DE L'AMERIQUE. The present work is the result of his third American trip overall, when he visited Guadeloupe, Martinique, and the coast of Brazil. Plumier describes and names 106 new genera of American plants herein for the first time. The finely detailed engraved plates depict the palm tree, magnolia, guanabanus, and scores of other tropical fruits and flowers. After Plumier's death in 1704, all of his drawings passed to the Cabinet des Estampes de Roi and served as the basis for the PLANTARUM AMERICANARUM FASCICULUS X (Amsterdam, 1715-60), in which he described hundreds of plants for the first time, including the Begonia. The binder Robert Steel (fl. 1668-1711) apprenticed with Samuel Mearne and took possession of his tools after his death in 1686. BUONANNI (or BONANNI), Filippo
Added engraved title & 40 engraved plates (three are folding). 1 p.l., 106 pp., one blank leaf. Small 4to, cont. English panelled calf (corners renewed, rebacked, some dampstaining in gutter at foot to first ten leaves). Rome: A. de Rubeis, 1703. First separate edition, originally published as the second part of the author's Observationes circa viventia (1691). Our edition - which is actually the original printing of the second part with a new title-page - is very rare with only one copy located by WorldCat. Buonanni (1738-1725), one of the most learned Jesuits of his time, was a pupil of Athanasius Kircher, and succeeded his master as teacher of mathematics at the Collegium Romanum. This work is one of the earliest Italian treatises on microscopy. It contains interesting observations on early microscopes and a precise description of Buonanni's own compound microscopes, which are illustrated on two plates. The rest of the plates show objects seen through the microscope, including a number of illustrations of insects. "The quality of his illustrations of various insects was excellent - particularly those of the fly, louse, mite, flea, and mosquito. Indeed, his drawings of the Culex pipiens (common house mosquito) are the best of the seventeenth century)."-D.S.B., II, p. 591. Very good copy. Duplicate from the British Museum with their duplicate stamp dated 1787. Armorial bookplate of Sir John Ingilby Bart. (1758-1815), M.P. and Fellow of the Royal Society.❧ Clay & Court, The History of the Microscope, pp. 84-86. Garrison-Morton 264-(1st ed. of 1691).
