LEIBNIZ, Gottfried Wilhelm
First edition. Ravier 472. Nouveaux essais sur l'entendement humain takes up almost all (520 pages) of this volume. Written in 1703-05 in reaction to John Locke's Essay concerning Humane Understanding, Leibniz delayed publication when he heard of Locke's death because he thought it unfair publicly to attack someone who could no longer defend himself. Immanuel Kant read the text closely four years after publication: 'the year '69 gave me great light' (Reflexionen 5037, 18:68). The title is something of a misnomer: the essais are couched in the form of a dialogue between Locke's spokesman Philalethes, who quotes from Coste's translation of the Essay, and Theophiles who replies for Leibniz. Modern commentators consider this text a high-water mark: Catherine Wilson calls it 'undoubtedly Leibniz's best composition: the richest, the most tightly argued, the most fertile ' ; and Peter Remnant and Jonathan Bennett say in the introduction to their Cambridge edition 'any attentive reader of the New Essays must receive a dominant impression of being in the presence of a powerful, restless, superbly sharp intelligence'. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 4to, half-title, [ii], xvi, [i], 540, [17] pp., contemporary half calf, a little rubbed and slightly stained, certain signatures with mild age-toning, otherwise just a few isolated spots, a fine copy. Leipzig & Dresden: Johann Christoph Miethen, 1703. [iv], 210, 287, [1] pages. Titles in red and black, woodcut frontispiece in part 1 showing a cockerel - repeated on verso of the last leaf, 1 folding table, diagrams and numerous tables in the text. Modern half calf, titled in blind over marbled boards. 8vo. Binding: 167 x 107 mm. Small repair to 1 leaf in part 2, with loss of page number and 1 letter only. However, a good copy overall. This is the first complete edition of this curious book - part 1 only was first published in 1695. The title states that the name of the author is contained in the A B C, and most probably it is there in all the anagrams and puzzles in the book, but his name has not been discovered. A rare work on the significance of the letters of the alphabet - mystical, musical, historical and alchemical. The book is full of puzzles, anagrams, ciphers, codes etc., and it has been the subject of scholarly study particularly relating to Bach's music and whether he was influenced by this book.

Antique print, titled: 'Carte de L'Empire de Japon ( ).' - Map of the Empire of Japan. Centered on the Bay of Osaka, this map covers from Hirado (here identified as I. Firando) and Nagasaki to Akita (Aquita), to include most of Tokugawa (Edo) Era Japan. The island of Hokkaido is not included in this map. Various towns, harbors, bays, provinces, mountains and daimyo are noted, although many are speculative. Engraving / etching with hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Jacques-Nicolas Bellin' after an anonymous artist. Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703 - 1772) was one of the most important cartographers of the 18th century. With a career spanning some 50 years, Bellin is best understood as geographe de cabinet and transitional mapmaker spanning the gap between 18th and early 19th century cartographic styles. His long career as Hydrographer and Ingénieur Hydrographe at the French Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine resulted in hundreds of high quality nautical charts of practically everywhere in the world. A true child of the Enlightenment Era, Bellin's work focuses on function and accuracy tending in the process to be less decorative than the earlier 17th and 18th century cartographic work. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Bellin was always careful to cite his references and his scholarly corpus consists of over 1400 articles on geography prepared for Diderot's Encyclopedie. Bellin, despite his extraordinary success, may not have enjoyed his work, which is described as "long, unpleasant, and h … [Click Below for Full Description]

BUONANNI (Filippo).
Romae, typis Antonii de Rubeis in Platea Cerensi, 1703. in-4. 1f. 106pp.

John Churchill Duke of MARLBOROUGH
