SAUVEUR, Joseph
A manuscript treatise in two parts, on astronomy, and on cosmography and longitude. The first and larger part is on the movement of the earth, the sun, stars and planets, the positions and orbits of which are shown in the exquisitely finished coloured plates, where the systems of Ptolemy, Copernicus and Tycho Brahe are also compared. The second part, Book II, is on latitude and longitude, the geography of the earth and its zones and climates. This part is illustrated with the last three plates. It includes the problems of finding the latitude, longitude, and exact time of a particular place. While navigators had been able to find their latitude with some accuracy, this is a very early study of longitude. As in England, it was perhaps prompted by the loss of part of a squadron of British naval ships on the Scilly Isles in 1707. Joseph Sauveur (1653-1716) was educated at the famous Jesuit school at La Flèche, where he was born, and later went to Paris to study medicine and, his real interest, mathematics. Despite a congenital speech defect he was a good teacher and became a tutor to nobility at the court of Louis XIV. He worked on hydraulic experiments with Mariotte and undertook research for a treatise on fortification, but his greatest work was on harmonics. He obtained the chair of mathematics at the Collège Royal in 1686, and became a member of the Académie Royale des Sciences in 1696. This manuscript, which is unpublished, can be dated to between 1703 and 1716 as Sauveur is described on the title-page as Examinateur des Ingenieurs de France, a position he obtained in 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

THORNTON, John
London,: John Thornton Hydrographer, at the England, Scotland and Ireland, in the Minories, 1703. London,: John Thornton Hydrographer, at the England, Scotland and Ireland, in the Minories,, 1703. From Cape Comarine to Japan, with all the Adjacent Islands. [1703]. Engraved chart on a laminated sheet, trimmed to upper neatline. The first state of Thornton's chart of the East Indies, published in his 'English Pilot: The Third Book... the Oriental Navigation', the first printed sea atlas devoted to Southeast Asia and the East Indies. The great 'English Pilot' project had been started by John Seller in 1671, with a fragmentary edition of the 'Oriental Navigation (Third Book)' published in 1675. Seller's financial troubles, however, precluded any further editions, and it was not until four years after his death, in 1701, that another fragmentary 'Third Book' was reissued by Thomas Mount and William Page, whom had probably acquired the plates and text from Seller's one time business partner William Fisher. It would not be until 1703, when John Thornton published a rival edition, that a complete seaman's guide and set of printed charts for navigation to and in Southeast Asia was bought to market. Thornton was part of the consortium that had overseen the publication of the first edition of 1675, and his position as hydrographer to the East India Company (E.I.C.) meant he had a ready supply of charts of the area. In fact we know that Thornton had access to some of the most up-to-date charts of the region, due to a collection of 17 manuscript charts signed by him, now housed in the B … [Click Below for Full Description]

NOLIN (Jean-Baptiste).
Paris, J.B. Nolin, 1703. 425 x 489 mm.

BIRON, Claude
Paris, Jean Moreau, 1703. 8vo, ff. [3], 23, [1], pp. 282, [4], with eight engraved plates, one folding; old collector’s stamp to outer margin of title; four leaves at the beginning a bit stained in the margins; a very good copy in contemporary French calf, spine gilt, red leather label. FIRST EDITION, RATHER RARE, OF BIRON’S ACCOUNT OF HIS TWO VOYAGES TO THE LESSER ANTILLES AND TO INDIA, INCLUDING OBSERVATIONS OF CURIOSITIES, BOTH NATURAL AND MAN-MADE, AND ONE OF THE WORKS KNOWN TO HAVE BEEN WITH SIR JOSEPH BANKS ABOARD THE ENDEAVOUR. The first, brief log gives a synopsis of his journey to the West Indies, notably La Martinique and Guadeloupe, with special reference to samples of sulphur collected at La Soufrière on Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe, for analysis back in Paris. This is followed by a long letter received by Biron from the French physicist, numismatist and writer Pierre Le Lorrain, Abbé de Vallemont, prior to his second, longer journey encouraging him to thoroughly study the three realms of nature, with the specific request of recording anything of medical interest or application. The section that follows describes the voyage around the Cape towards India aboard the French East India Company vessel Maurepas, accompanied by three other ships, the Pondichéri, the Bourbon, and the Marchand des Indes, with some detail on the various stops along the journey. The remainder of the work describes a number of curiosities, herbs, stones, fruit, animals, man-made artefacts, etc. some of which are shown in the plates. There are notes on ‘Terre de Patna’, used in India to produce a … [Click Below for Full Description]

BUONANNI (Filippo).
Romae, typis Antonii de Rubeis in Platea Cerensi, 1703. in-4. 1f. 106pp.

1703. Pratica Di alcuni Esercizi Spirituali Di S. Ignazio Propost A Dal P. Sebastiano Izquierdo Deesa Compagnia De Giesu. In Firenze, per Michele Nestenus, MDCCIII. 1703. Hard cover. Some wear to spine, stratches on back cover (see pictures). A few library stamps on title page (this comes from a former Passionist Seminary library in New York. A repaired missing corner on title page, otherwise pages are in quite good condition. Happy to provide additional photos or information upon request. Sebastiano Izquierdo was also the author of Pharus scientiarum, a treatise on a methodology to access knowledge, conceived as a single science. In this work, he assimilated Aristotelian and Baconian logic, and he expressed some original ideas on mathematics and logic that have earned their author a reputation as an outstanding mathematician. Not just like his Spanish contemporaries John Caramuel or Tomás Vicente Tosca , but also significant foreign mathematicians as Athanasius Kircher , Gaspar Knittel or Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz , the latter, in particular, cited with, his Disputatio of Combinatione, in Combinatorial Art (1666). NESTENUS, John Michael. - Son of George and Elizabeth of Piero Bandini, was born in Florence in the second half of the seventeenth century. The father probably belonged to the group of families of the guards at the turn of the Grand Duke. A brother Nestenus, John Sebastian, was in fact "under handset Guard Stops Corazze Alemanne the Glorious Memory of Giovan Gastone first" (Morelli Timpanaro, 1999, p. 470); another brother, Pier Francesco, born Jacopo Alessandro, … [Click Below for Full Description]

DAMPIER, William.
London: James Knapton, 1703. Octavo, with a folding frontispiece map, four maps and ten plates and tables; publishers advertisements at end; in original eighteenth-panelled calf, spine renewed. The important and rare first edition of the first deliberate English voyage to Australia, one of very few classic pre-Cook voyages to the continent. Dampier was the first Englishman to visit Australia when he stopped on the west coast in 1688, but he remained only a short time (publishing an account in 1697). In 1699, he set sail again on this voyage to New Holland. His account represented a third volume of adventures, and although the title page refers to the work as volume three, it was in fact published quite separately. The engraved plates - birds, fish and plants - are among the very earliest depictions of Australian natural history. 'Dampier's 1699 voyage was the second expedition of the English to Australia. He furnished accurate information and surveys, and wrote concerning Australia: "It is not yet determined whether it is an island or a main continent; but I am certain that it joyns neither to Asia, Africa, nor America." His description of the Aborigines of Australia probably inspired Jonathan Swift to write about Gulliver among the Yahoos' (Hill). Widely regarded as the greatest English explorer and navigator before Cook, Dampier was also a popular and exciting writer. His books went through many editions - indeed he is still in print in one form or another - but copies of the first edition of this voyage to New Holland are now uncommon. As James A. Williamson wrote in his … [Click Below for Full Description]
