San Juan de la Cruz born Juan de Yepes y Álvarez 1542-1591)
Francisco de Leedfdael, Sevilla, 1703. xvi+120; 511+[blank]; 23 unnumbered pages with 2 plates and 59 engravings. Folio (12 3/4" x 9") bound in contemporary vellum. (Palau 292.649) 12th impression. Juan de la Cruz was a Carmelite friar and priest of Marrano origin, and is a major figure of the Spanish Counter-Reformation, a mystic and Roman Catholic saint. He is one of thirty-six Doctors of the Church. He is known especially for his writings. He was mentored by and corresponded with the older Carmelite, Teresa of Avila. Both his poetry and his studies on the development of the soul are considered the summit of mystical Spanish literature as of all Spanish literature. He was canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726. He is considered one of the foremost poets in Spanish. Although his complete poems add up to fewer than 2500 verses, two of them, the Spiritual Canticle and the Dark Night of the Soul, are widely considered masterpieces of Spanish poetry, both for their formal style and their rich symbolism and imagery. His theological works often consist of commentaries on the poems. All the works were written between 1578 and his death in 1591. Condition: Front ties in place but broken and lacking back ties, some staining to cover, front inner hinge cracked, former owner's marginalia to front end paper which is rough at the edges, title with edge wear and some small edge tears else a good copy, internally very good. HEYLYN Peter
1703. Folio (387 x 253 mm); letterpress title-page printed red and black, engraved frontispiece, 5 unsigned folding engraved maps: the world and four continents. A very good, large-paper, copy. Bookplates of John Peyto Verney and Robert John Verney, both Lord Willoughby de Broke, probably the 15th and 17th of that title. Contemporary speckled calf, five raised bands and red morocco label to spine. Extremities rubbed, headcap missing, joints split but binding still holding. London : Edward Brewster (et al.), The five maps are generally (but probably incorrectly) attributed to Robert Morden (d. 1703), based on an early advertisement announcing this edition. The map of America gives an interesting delineation of the western part of North America, with the Mississippi flowing into the Gulf of Mexico through Texas, California depicted as an island, a legendary inland sea, ?The Great Lake of Thongo or Thoya?, and a long curved imaginary coastline north from California. References: ESTC T107951; Worms & Baynton-Williams, on Morden.

His Notitia Orbis Antiqui was first published in Leipzig in 1701. When John Owen, Printer to the University of Cambridge, undertook a new edition, he copied the maps for volume I from the Leipzig edition. He advertised this first volume in The Post Man, 17th-19th December 1702, at 15s. in sheets, although the title-page, as usual for books published late in a year, is dated 1703. A subsequent advertisement added ? The Book contains 115 sheets and 21 half sheet maps, which for the price is reckoned but 1 penny per sheet, and the maps at 3d. each, it being printed with new Characters and on very good French Demy Paper.? (idem, 5th-7th January, 1703). The project appears not to have been a success for Owen. The second volume was printed in Amsterdam, using the printing plates f … [Click Below for Full Description]

BROUGHTON, John.
W. B. for T. Bennet and John Bosvile, London, 1703. TP + [i]-[xi] = Dedication + [xiii]-[xxxv] = Preface + [xxxvi] = Errata + [xxxvii] = detailed half title for Part I with advertisements on verso + 1-418 + [419]-[432] = Contents, Octavo. First Edition. In 1702, William Coward published Second Thoughts concerning Human Soul in which he maintained, partly based on theories found in Locke's Essay, that there is no such thing as a separate soul, but that immortal life would be conferred upon the whole man at the resurrection. The first part of Psychologia demonstates "by rational argument the established doctrine of an immaterial and hence immortal substance united with the human body" while the second part argues for this position, attacking Coward's position, point by point and accusing him of being a follower of Democritus, Lucretius, Spinoza and Hobbes - atheists all. But, most particularly, Boughton traced Coward's position back to the Essay Concerning Humane Understanding (1690) in which Locke claimed that God could give matter the capacity to think. Boughton attacked this belief claiming that the concepts of thought and extension were incompatible and that this incompatibility proved the existence of an immaterial substance in humans, i.e. an immortal soul. Anthony Collins described Boughton's book to his friend Locke as "a discourse on nothing, or on something about which no one knows anything." In his reply, Locke admitted that merely reading the fifth section of the book had convinced him that it was not worth bothering with the rest since it was written by an author … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fascinating map of the North Pole by Heinrich Scherer (1628-1704) for his Atlas Novus exhibens orbem terraguem per naturae opera, historiae navae acveterus monumenta, artistique geographicae leges et praecepta...published in eight volumes from 1702-1710 in Munich. Scherer, a devout Jesuit, produced this geographical compendium to depict the Catholic hierarchy and the spread of Jesuit missions throughout the world. The map itself presents typical cartography for the period, leaving open the possibility of both a Northeast and Northwest Passage to the Far East. The map is literally filled with images of sea monsters, whaling, hunting and exploration. The title cartouche is engraved onto the hide of a polar bear with two hunters, and at right is a vignette of the people of Lapland. Copper etching, some light stains, otherwise in good condition.

Sinclair, Archibald, Sir, 1664-1719
[Edinburgh]: 1703. First Edition. Softcover. Together two volumes, small quarto. 12 pp., COMPLETE. Stitched in old blue paper wrappers at a recent date. Contemporary (or near-contemporary) author attributions in ink on title-pages, faint blind-stamps on first and final leaves of both pamphlets. Very good. BOTH editions of Sinclair's pamphlet recommending Scottish parliamentary reform, such as a triennial act, as well as toleration for dissent. The pamphlet demonstrates a royalist thread in Country discourse that can be linked to Episcopalian interests. ¶ Two editions appeared in 1703, both sina loca (but Edinburgh). The first edition is ESTC T57077. The second edition is distinguished by the title: 'Some thoughts *upon* the present state of affairs' (ESTC T155643). Priority is here established for the first time, afforded by careful examination of both editions side-by-side; it seems probable that ESTC T155643 was printed from ESTC T57077: compare the catchword on p. 2: in ESTC T155643 this catchword is typographically defective and seems to tumble outside the margin, whereas in ESTC T57077 the catchword, all all associated justification, is quite perfect. ¶ Sir Archibald, knight, (Baronet of Longformacus) was M.P. for Kirkwall, Orkney, and served in the Scottish Parliament for Wick from 1690-1702. He was admitted to Advocate in 1695, and was invested as a Knight ca. 1697 (cf. Burke's Peerage, 1847, p. 905, and Cokayne's Baronetage, reprinted 1983, vol. III, p. 351). Hanson, 261. Kress, S-2273. His work is considered one of the first comprehensive descripions of the western part of the continent. HOWES L25. "Lahontan's narrative, of considerable value when confined to his actual sojournyings in the Lake region, was unfortunately disfigured by his inserting an account of a pretended trip west of the Mississippi, about as convincing as the legends of the sea-serpents."
