Seinen Anmerkungen … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRUNUS, Gabriel
Gothic type, in double columns. Woodcut illustration of St. Jerome at his devotions on title. Sixteenth - century boards, rebacked; staining throughout, mostly marginal. From the library of César de Missy (see provenance below), with additional signatures and annotations throughout, including a long manuscript notation on the verso of title. A complete copy of this rare and esteemed edition of the Latin Vulgate with marginal concordances, St. Jerome?s prefaces, and augmented by the revised alphabetical tables of Gabriel Brunus, as well as the ?Interpretationes Hebraicorum nominum.? Brunus? tables summarize the contents of each of the books of the Bible. The printer, Johann Reinhard, though originally from Grüninger, trained in Venice before founding his own printing press in Strassburg. In addition to the Latin classics, he also printed works of the humanists of his time. The best known works from his studio were a Brunschwig medical text and a translation into Latin of Sebastian Brant?s Ship of fools. Provenance: This interesting association copy was in the possession of the great writer and scholar, Cesar de Missy (1703 - 1775), theologian, chaplain to George II, scholar of the New Testament, and book collector. De Missy was famous for his invaluable work in preserving original manuscripts that enriched religious and philosophical understanding and moral debates on the issues of the day. His collection of books and manuscripts was acquired by well - known physicians William Hunter and then Matthew Ballie before being donated to Glasgow University in 1807.

Gutes Expl. Sinclair, Archibald, Sir, 1664-1719
[Edinburgh], 1703. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. Together two volumes, small quarto. 12 pp., COMPLETE. Stitched in old blue paper wrappers at a recent date. Contemporary (or near-contemporary) author attributions in ink on title-pages, faint blind-stamps on first and final leaves of both pamphlets. BOTH editions of Sinclair's pamphlet recommending Scottish parliamentary reform, such as a triennial act, as well as toleration for dissent. The pamphlet demonstrates a royalist thread in Country discourse that can be linked to Episcopalian interests. Two editions appeared in 1703, both sina loca (but Edinburgh). The first edition is ESTC T57077. The second edition is distinguished by the title: 'Some thoughts *upon* the present state of affairs' (ESTC T155643). Priority is here established for the first time, afforded by careful examination of both editions side-by-side; it seems probable that ESTC T155643 was printed from ESTC T57077: compare the catchword on p. 2: in ESTC T155643 this catchword is typographically defective and seems to tumble outside the margin, whereas in ESTC T57077 the catchword, all all associated justification, is quite perfect. Sir Archibald, knight, (Baronet of Longformacus) was M.P. for Kirkwall, Orkney, and served in the Scottish Parliament for Wick from 1690-1702. He was admitted to Advocate in 1695, and was invested as a Knight ca. 1697 (cf. Burke's Peerage, 1847, p. 905, and Cokayne's Baronetage, reprinted 1983, vol. III, p. 351). Hanson, 261. Kress, S-2273.

PUFENDORF, [Samuel, Freiherr von]
Eight books. Written in Latin by the Baron Pufendorf, Counsellor of State to His late Swedish Majesty, and to the present King of Prussia. Translated into English, from the best edition. With a short introduction.Samuel von Pufendorf (1632-1694), a distinguished German jurist, had moved to Lund in 1670 and there published De jure Naturae et Gentium libri octo (1672). "In the De jure Naturae et Gentium libri octo Pufendorf built on the work of Grotius and extended and developed it. It is a complete system of law public, private, and international, based on natural law. Against Hobbes's view he contended that the state of nature was one of peace, not war, and he urged the view that international law was not confined to Christendom but existed between all nations. His work, though for long inadequately appreciated, is of great importance. He presented the basis of a universal legal science on the basis of natural law." [Oxford Companion. p.1017].folio, title printed within double-ruled border, (8) + 27 + (21) + 239 + (1) + 273 - 400 + 104 + 107 - 231 + (1) + 143 - 262pp., this copy with the errata leaf at the end of the introduction, contemporary panelled calf, sometime sympathetically rebacked, spine gilt with raised bands and a label. A fine, crisp, copy, from the mid-19th century library of William Hodges Tylden Pattenson (1857) with his ownership inscription on front pastedown., 1703. First edition in English. [DANCKERTS, ALLARD, VISSCHER, DE WIT, MORTIER and others].
Cf. Koeman, Dan 4. A splendid composite atlas in a beautiful and well-balanced colouring, probably from a single professional workshop, including the work of Johannes Danckerts, Justus Danckerts, Theodorus Danckerts, Cornelis Danckerts, Carel Allard, Abraham Allard, Nicolaas Visscher I & II, Frederik de Wit, Pieter Mortier, Caspar Specht) and even a map of North America by Alexis-Hubert Jaillot in Paris. The makeup of the atlas resembles that of one published by Theodorus and Cornelis III Danckerts sometime between 1703 and 1713 (Koeman, Dan 4). Not only do 13 of the present 20 Danckerts maps and plates appear in that atlas, but it also apparently begins with the same allegorical title-page, drawn by Gerard van Houten and engraved by Petrus Schenk I and ends with the same plate of flags. Both include Cornelis Danckerts's Nieuw Aerdsch Pleyn, a world map in an equidistant polar projection. Although nearly half the maps in the present atlas are by the Danckerts family, several of the most recent maps in the atlas are by Pieter Mortier, but given the strong French flavour of his atlases, the present does not seem to fit into his oeuvre. With the title-page somewhat tattered and with a restoration affecting the end of the banderole, but generally in good condition, with occasional minor tears and folds. A composite atlas apparently assembled and coloured by an Amsterdam map publisher ca. 1706.A complete list of the maps is available on request.

WINTER, Georg Simon
1703. WINTER, Georg Simon. Tractatio nova et auctior De Re Equaria... Neuer und vermehrter Tractat von der Stuterey oder Fohlen-Zucht... Engraved title-page, [22], 223, [5] pp. Illustrated with 46 engraved equestrian plates. Folio, 331 x 210 mm, bound in near-contemporary German marbled boards. Nuremberg: Wolfgang Moritz Endters, 1703. |~||~| One of the few equestrian books of the Baroque period to be published in four languages. "In addition to offering counsel on choosing horses, their various qualities, their hygiene, their upkeep, etc., and of the necessities of the Riding Master and his employees, Winter enlightens us on all sorts of amulets and preservatives against sorcery... these singular principles on the upkeep of the horse were omitted from the first edition of the work [1672], but, happily, were included in later editions [1687 and 1703]" (Mennessier de La Lance). The text, in Latin, German, Italian and French, appears in parallel columns and is illustrated with 46 full or double-page equestrian plates of high quality, all of considerable interest to breeders, trainers, and veternarians. Of special interest are the plates of horse-monsters including a horse with two human feet and a long mane; a horse with a vast tail; a horse with eight hooves; a horse with a human head; a horse with front hooves upturned; a horse with six hooves; a monstrous horse-dog with three legs, including one human leg and foot; and several hermaphrodites. One double-page plate repaired, one full-page plate with corner torn away. Second flyleaf torn, perhaps with the loss of an early in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sets with all ten parts complete plus the menagerie are rarely found. With bookplate on paste-down. In good condition, with some marginal browning and a few tears repaired. Binding worn, spine damaged and some restorations. A magnificent series of 102 views of the Belvedere at Vienna and the animals in its menagerie.

Vialart, Charles (Carl; Bishop of Avranches); Lucas Holsten
Amsterdam: Franciscus Halma, 1703. Eighteen inch elephant folio in 18th century leather boards (slightly scuffed, slight worming inner hinges, but basically sound), with 6 banded gilt-decorated leather spine. (8), 332, 72 pp. Internally very clean with very little browning or foxing. Includes half title, dedication to Cardinal Richelieu, decorative and allegorical fronntispiece (by G. Vander Gouwe after G. Hoet) and 2 engraved dedication plates (inlcuding Holsten's tomb) after H. Eland and Goere. All 10 b&w engraved maps are in excellent condtion with crisp images. There are maps of England, Turkey, France, Greece, Italy, Europe, Spain, Arabia, North Africa and Palestine, with designations for the Holy Sees.Lucas Holsten (Luc Holste) was a geographer and theological writer, and his text was not in Vialart's original publication in 1641. The notes included with this 1703 edition were first published in 1666, but it is with this current offering that they first appeared together with the maps. There is an owners signature (Walter Bowman?) penned neatly on the verso of the frontispiece, and some hand written notes indicating the presence of a (12 leave) prospectus bound separately at the end, by Richard Pococke, and titled: Dissertatio de geographia Egypti, Londoni, 1743. These latter leaves were obviously bound in a bit later, with separate margins, and may have been the prospectus to his "A description of the East, and some other countries..", published from 1743-45 in 3 volumes. It is not clear why they were bound with Vialart's work, although there is another owner's not … [Click Below for Full Description]

WINCKLER, Johann Heinrich (ed.)
1703. First and only edition of a collection of papers about whether animals can be said to possess the power of 'reason', edited and introduced by the Leipzig scientist and friend of J.S. Bach, Johann Heinrich Winckler (1703-70). The contributors are Johann Gottlob Werner, Martin Gottlieb Pauli, Ernst Salomon Hausdorf, Christoph Jeremias Rost, Benjamin Groddeck, Christlieb Traugott Bierling, Christhold Mylius (Lessing's cousin), Carl Gottlob von Penzig, Johann Christian Körner, Ernst Christian Wagner and Friedrich Heinrich Wagner. Their consensus, against the Cartesians, is that certain animals must be called reasonable creatures because (a) they can connect one judgement with another, (b) they sometimes plan for the future, (c) they use a sort of language, and (d) they seem to exhibit some kind of moral sensibility. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Small 8vo, title vignette of a bear in the wilderness, 93 pp., plain twentieth-century binding, some spotting and browning, a sound copy of a very scarce book.
