Gregoire Leti
Amsterdam-Henri Schelte, 1703. Book. Two decorative volumes of biographical work on Cromwell, in French. Both have an engraved frontispiece. Scarce. With a dedication to Madame Yolande Beatrix, Grand Princess of Tuscany. Oliver Cromwell (25 April 1599 3 September 1658) was an English military and political leader and later Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland. Born into the middle gentry, Cromwell was relatively obscure for the first 40 years of his life. After undergoing a religious conversion in the 1630s, he became an independent puritan, taking a generally tolerant view towards the many Protestant sects of his period. Condition: In quarter calf bindings with mottled paper covered boards, and gilt title and design detailing to the spines. Externally, generally very smart with a little rubbing and shelfwear. The hinges are slightly strained. Internally, generally firmly bound, with only the end papers loosening in volume I. The pages have some age toning, spotting and handling marks. Both have an ex libris stamp to the second endpaper, dated 1962. Overall: VERY GOOD. Very Good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
