GRIMALDI Costantino
Bell'esempl. (timbro nel margine bianco del titolo).

CARLEVARIS, Luca.
Venice 1703 - Landscape folio (30 x 42.2 cm). Engraved title, dedication to Doge Luigi Mocenigo dated 27 May 1703, 103 numbered etched views by Carlevaris; puncture marks to the centre-verso of plate 103 running through to plate 95, with associated small holes to plates 100-103, occasional faint soiling and browning. Contemporary panelled calf, gilt spine with red morocco lettering-piece, speckled edges; rebacked preserving spine. Best work by the first distinguished painter of Venetian Veduta and one of the earliest practitioners of this painting type. Born in Udine, Carlevaris (1663 – 1730) moved to Venice at the age of sixteen. The present work, consisting of 103 engravings, is the most complete survey of the fabriche of the city ever produced and served as a model for Venetian view painters throughout the XVIII century. It is the first series of Venetian views conceived of as a whole and consists of predominantly frontal views of the most important buildings and squares of Venice, particularly the Piazza San Marco. It was intended as an accurate description of Venice's beauty for foreigners. Amongst the most striking views are those of the private palaces (plates 65-103). 'Carlevaris often achieves extraordinary clarity and appeal by the almost modern economy of his line, especially when illustrating the more modest structures that often flank the patrician palaces on which the series is focused. The large blank wall areas soaked with light, the planarity of his of his architectural rendering, and his sky and water, were to be influential not only on his immediate … [Click Below for Full Description]

NOLIN (Jean-Baptiste) & BAUDRAND (Michel Antoine).
Paris, J.B. Nolin, 1703.

Frattino Giulio Carlo dis. & Simone Durello inc
1703. Il titolo della carta è inserito in alto a destra in un decorativo festone sostenuto da un putto alato; vi si legge "STATO DI MILANO e Provincie Confinanti dalla Parte Orientale". A sinistra della carta si segnalano, entro un drappo sostenuto da un angioletto, delle curiose avvertenze al lettore: "Lettore / Se in questa Carta non / vedrai delineati tutti i / luoghi piccoli sappi che / l'intentione è stata di metterti per ora sotto gl'occhi i più principali, / con le strade, e Fiumi, / per darti poi a vedere / in altro più diffuso dis / segno minutamente cio, / che manca al presente, / e vivi felice". La carta fu sicuramente edita come foglio singolo; infatti, come si legge nella dedica al lettore, l'autore preannuncia l'uscita di una carta successiva più particolareggiata, di cui però non si hanno notizie. La carta del Frattino nacque in un momento particolare della storia del Ducato di Milano, in quanto contemporanea al passaggio tra il dominio spagnolo e quello austriaco avvenuto nel 1706. Fu considerata molto importante per la precisione con cui erano segnati i confini del Ducato di Milano verso il Piemonte, tanto che il governo austriaco nel 1739 ne sollecitò l'acquisto.Riferimenti: Davoli, Sanfelici, Zanasi Terre di Langobardia la Lombardia, il corso del Po' e il Ducato Estense nell'antica cartografia a stampa 1520 - 1796, pag. 108. L'ISLE (Guillaume de);
Tooley, p. 20, 35.

CERRUTI AGOSTINO
Domenico De Rossi, 1703.

è inserita a p. 30. MORDEN, Robert (d.1703) & Christopher BROWNE (fl.1684-1712)
London: Robert Morden & Christopher Browne, 1703. Copper-engraved map, with original outline colour, in very good condition overall. A very fine map of Savoy & Piedmont by two great English cartographers Robert Morden (d. 1703) was one of a new group of mapmakers who established the art of map publication in London on a permanent basis. As demonstrated in this excellent map of Savoy and Piedmont, Morden conveys the artistic and graphic standards of the late 17th century Dutch masters to English idiom. This is particularly true of the very fine engraving, evident here, that would not be typical of 18th century maps in general. Morden's early 18th century map of Savoy and Piedmont includes important topographical illustrations of this very mountainous region, but also, innovatively, main roads. The coats of arms of the House of Savoy, Piedmont and Tyrol are displayed around the title cartouche.

Erasmus, Desiderius.
Before his death, Erasmus (1466-1536) divided his writings into nine ordines (categories) for posthumous publication. This is the second edition of his collected works, first published in nine volumes by Froben in 1540. Like the original, this set includes additions by authors from the Dutch humanist's international circle and portraits of the same, as well as => myriad engravings after Holbein. The printer, Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733), was an apprentice of Daniel van Gaasbeeck (fl. 1655-92) and primarily known for maps and travel books. The text in all volumes is in Latin with some Greek, printed in roman and italic, mostly double-column with sidenotes and many large woodcut initials and tailpieces, as well as some engraved headpieces. Vol. I has both a general title-page and a volume title-page; each of the volume title-pages is printed in red and black and features a large engraved vignette signed by the illustrator J. Goeree and the engraver J. Baptist; some volumes also have sectional title-pages. There are many engraved plates: vol. I features an added engraved title-page, a double-page plate, and one full-page plate; in vol. III, part one, there are => 18 full-page engraved portraits of contemporaries of Erasmus including Melanchthon, Alciatus, Charles V, and Bembo, as well as two more full-page portraits in vol. III, part two. In Praise of Folly, in vol. IV, is illustrated with => 75 single-column-width engraved vignettes (3.5" sq.) and six double-column-width engravings (4.25" x 7.25") after the famous Holbein originals, and a full-page engraved portrait … [Click Below for Full Description]
