BUONANNI (or BONANNI), Filippo
1703. Added engraved title & 40 engraved plates (three are folding). 1 p.l., 106 pp., one blank leaf. Small 4to, cont. English panelled calf (corners renewed, rebacked, some dampstaining in gutter at foot to first ten leaves). Rome: A. de Rubeis, 1703. First separate edition, originally published as the second part of the author's Observationes circa viventia (1691). Our edition - which is actually the original printing of the second part with a new title-page - is very rare with only one copy located by WorldCat. Buonanni (1738-1725), one of the most learned Jesuits of his time, was a pupil of Athanasius Kircher, and succeeded his master as teacher of mathematics at the Collegium Romanum. This work is one of the earliest Italian treatises on microscopy. It contains interesting observations on early microscopes and a precise description of Buonanni's own compound microscopes, which are illustrated on two plates. The rest of the plates show objects seen through the microscope, including a number of illustrations of insects. "The quality of his illustrations of various insects was excellent - particularly those of the fly, louse, mite, flea, and mosquito. Indeed, his drawings of the Culex pipiens (common house mosquito) are the best of the seventeenth century)."-D.S.B., II, p. 591. Very good copy. Duplicate from the British Museum with their duplicate stamp dated 1787. Armorial bookplate of Sir John Ingilby Bart. (1758-1815), M.P. and Fellow of the Royal Society. ? (GRAEVIUS, Joannes Georgius)
31 pp. 8vo, cont. calf-backed marbled boards. Leyden: P. van der Aa, 1703. First edition and rare. Graevius (1632-1703), German classical scholar and critic, was professor at Utrecht. He had a high reputation as a teacher and was a particular favorite of William III of England, who made him historiographer royal. His editions of the classics marked a distinct advance in scholarship. He is best remembered for his Thesaurus Antiquitatum Romanorum (1694-99), which is the first encyclopedic compilation of the knowledge of the ancient Roman world. His friend and colleague Jacobus Gronovius (1645-1716), Dutch classical scholar, published a complementary work - Thesaurus Antiquitatum Graecarum (1697-1702) - which dealt with ancient Greece. Both are compilations of earlier works by more than 120 contributors; they became standard reference tools throughout the 18th century. Following Graevius's death in early 1703, Peter van der Aa, the publisher of the two thesauri, decided to stimulate sales by issuing the present catalogue. It was designed to be a guide to the contents of each series. It lists the contributors and their texts found in the two thesauri. References to each series, volume, and page number are given. Fine copy.

SANSON D'ABBEVILLE NICOLAS.

Battelli, Giovanni Cristoforo
after May 1703].. Early 18th-century manuscript on paper, 273x197 mm. 179 leaves, including seven blanks. complete. Text written by two different Italian hands in brown ink, single column of 25 lines, with contemporary inked pagination. Contemporary vellum on pasteboards. Spine with raised bands, inked title ?Battelli Diario de Terremoti?. At the foot the number ?890? in brown ink; remains of a later paper label. Minor stains to lower cover. Excellent state, light finger-soiling, a few small ink stains and dampstaining. Numerous interlinear and marginal corrections, probably by Battelli himself. Unpublished and unstudied manuscript, a detailed chronicle of 1703 earthquake written by Battelli, secretary of the Apostolic Chancery of Briefs, and personal librarian of Clemens xi. The text is introduced by a long epistle to the readers, and the events are reported from the night of 14 January to 22 May 1703, i.e. the date of the last Pope?s brief transcribed by Battelli. Possibly the manuscript was later reworked with a view of its publication, as could be proved by the fact that on the first leaf Battelli?s previous title of ?Monsignore? has been modified in ?Arcivescovo?: Battelli was made archbishop of Amasea in 1716. Copies of this manuscript are not recorded in the Biblioteca Vaticana, but the title of a Storia di quanto occorse in Roma in occasione del terremoto l?anno 1703 is listed by Filippo Vecchietti among Battelli?s unpublished works (Biblioteca Picena ii, p. 112). BUONANNI (or BONANNI), Filippo.
Our edition -- which is actually the original printing of the second part with a new title-page -- is very rare with only one copy located by WorldCat. "The quality of his illustrations of various insects was excellent -- particularly those of the fly, louse, mite, flea, and mosquito. ❧ Clay & Court, The History of the Microscope, pp. 84-86. Garrison-Morton 264-(1st ed. of 1691). .

Michelot (Henry) :
Marseille, Pierre Mesnier, 1703 ; in-4 ; plein veau havane marbré, dos à nerfs bien décoré et doré, tranches mouchetées (reliure de l'époque) ; (12), 340, (4) pp. (Polak, 6701). EDITION ORIGINALE.

[Bayard, Nicholas]
London: Printed at New York by order of his Excellency the Lord Cornbury, and reprinted at London, 1703. 31,[1]pp. Antique-style half calf and marbled boards. Title-leaf neatly lined on verso, several small marginal tears carefully repaired, light overall browning. Else a very attractive copy. The first British (and earliest obtainable) edition of one of the earliest printed American judicial proceedings. Nicholas Bayard (1644-1707), nephew of Peter Stuyvesant, was mayor of New York and a member of the governor's council. When Jacob Leisler seized control of the government of New York in 1689, Bayard was a prime target, and he fled to Albany, where he was seized, brought back to the fort, and imprisoned. Finally Gov. Sloughter arrived from England and had Bayard released. In 1697 the new governor, Bellomont, accused Bayard of complicity with the previous governor in the encouragement and protection of pirates. Bayard was removed from office and later accused of encouraging sedition and mutiny and of being a Jacobite. Tried for high treason, he was sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. The present work contains the entire text of the 1701/2 proceedings, which were subsequently declared to have been illegal. The first edition, printed in New York in 1702, is known in only a few copies, in the usual institutions. This British edition, which contains additional text, is almost as scarce. HOWES B256, "b."
