Cerruti Agostino
Bibliografia: Davoli - Sanfelici - Zanasi, 2003, n° 84; Cintori 2016, p. 55. Aliprandi, vol. DAMPIER, William.
London: James Knapton, 1703. Octavo, with a folding frontispiece map, four maps and ten plates and tables; publishers advertisements at end; period style calf. The important and rare first edition of the first deliberate English voyage to Australia, one of very few classic pre-Cook voyages to the continent. Dampier was the first Englishman to visit Australia when he stopped on the west coast in 1688, but he remained only a short time (publishing an account in 1697). In 1699, he set sail again on this voyage to New Holland. His account represented a third volume of adventures, and although the title page refers to the work as volume three, it was in fact published quite separately. The engraved plates - birds, fish and plants - are among the very earliest depictions of Australian natural history.'Dampier's 1699 voyage was the second expedition of the English to Australia. He furnished accurate information and surveys, and wrote concerning Australia: "It is not yet determined whether it is an island or a main continent; but I am certain that it joyns neither to Asia, Africa, nor America." His description of the Aborigines of Australia probably inspired Jonathan Swift to write about Gulliver among the Yahoos' (Hill).Widely regarded as the greatest English explorer and navigator before Cook, Dampier was also a popular and exciting writer. His books went through many editions - indeed he is still in print in one form or another - but copies of the first edition of this voyage to New Holland are now uncommon. As James A. Williamson wrote in his introduction to the 1939 Argonaut P … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frattino Giulio Carlo
Henrick SCHERER (Dilingen 1628 - Monaco 1704)
Map of the world, shown on a north polar projection and showing the entire world except the South Pole, California is shown as an island and the track of Magellan's voyage around the world is noted. There is a distorted portion of Australia noted as Nova Hollandia. On the left is an illustration of Victoria, the only remaining ship from Magellan's Armada de Molucca that sailed from Seville in 1519 in search of a westward route to the Spice Islands. 1703. Fascinating map of the North Pole by Heinrich Scherer (1628-1704) for his Atlas Novus exhibens orbem terraguem per naturae opera, historiae navae acveterus monumenta, artistique geographicae leges et praecepta...published in eight volumes from 1702-1710 in Munich. Scherer, a devout Jesuit, produced this geographical compendium to depict the Catholic hierarchy and the spread of Jesuit missions throughout the world. The map itself presents typical cartography for the period, leaving open the possibility of both a Northeast and Northwest Passage to the Far East. The map is literally filled with images of sea monsters, whaling, hunting and exploration. The title cartouche is engraved onto the hide of a polar bear with two hunters, and at right is a vignette of the people of Lapland. Copper etching, some light stains, otherwise in good condition. Bellin, Jacques Nicolas. (1703 - 1772).
Original, hand-coloured engraving. The engraving (the plate) itself 55.5 cm x 90 cm. Outer Margins 67 cm wide x 97 cm high. Original Map with a 4 cm tear (repaired). Only very mild signs of foxing. A very beautiful and large map of the British Isles. Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 21 March 1772) was a French hydrographer, geographer, and member of the French intellectual group called the philosophes. Bellin was born in Paris. He was hydrographer of France's hydrographic office, member of the Académie de Marine and of the Royal Society of London. Over a 50-year career, he produced a large number of maps of particular interest to the Ministère de la Marine. His maps of Canada and of French territories in North America (New France, Acadia, Louisiana) are particularly valuable. He died at Versailles. In 1721, at age 18, he was appointed hydrographer (chief cartographer) to the French Navy. In August 1741, he became the first Ingénieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine (the French Hydrographical Office) and was named Official Hydrographer of the French King. During his reign the Depot came out with prodigious amount of charts and maps among which was a large folio format sea-charts of France, the Neptune Francois. He also produced a number of sea-atlases of the world, e.g., the Atlas Maritime and the Hydrographie Francaise. These gained fame, distinction and respect all over Europe and were republished throughout the 18th and even in the succeeding century. Bellin also came out with smaller format maps such as the 1764 Petit Atlas Maritime (5 vols.) conta … [Click Below for Full Description]

BLEYSWIJCK, Dirck van
Pieter Smith, [1703]., Amsterdam, - A true topographical monument Large engraved wall map, full original colour, on four sheets, joined, surrounded by 33 views of the city and its architecture, mounted on board, a few minor areas of loss skilfully repaired. This fine plan was produced under the stewardship of Dirck van Bleyswijck. Van Bleyswijck (1639-1681) was born into a prominent Delft family and would later become sheriff, orphan master and burgomaster. In 1667, at the tender age of seventeen he published the first volume of his Beschryvinge der Stadt Delft (The Description of Delft), the second volume of which would appear in 1680. The work detailed the history of the city, its monuments, and its most famous historical figures. So impressed were his fellow citizens by his work that he was made burgomaster of Delft in 1675, and was commissioned by them to coordinate the production of a large wall map of the city. The surveying for the plan was carried out by Jacob Spoors, with Johannes de Ram being engaged to engrave the map. The fine cartouches that adorn the plan were the work of the great Baroque artist Romeyn de Hooghe. The resultant work depicts Delft in birds-eye view with the houses, churches, public buildings, streets, and canals all beautifully rendered. Beyond the city walls lie a patchwork of fields, in which can been seen numerous cows, together with the occasional stork, which were encouraged to build nests in the city, as they were believed to bring good luck. The cartouches tell of Delft's maritime and trading might, from Neptune mounted on a sea horse to … [Click Below for Full Description]
