[Bayard, Nicholas]
London: Printed at New York by Order of his Excellency the Lord Cornbury, and reprinted at London, 1703. 31,[1]pp. Folio. Modern three-quarter green morocco and cloth boards, gilt cover title. Minor shelf wear, some spotting and sunning to boards. Tight binding obscuring some text near gutter. Minor tanning throughout, tidelines to upper edge of last half of text block. Overall very good. The first British (and earliest obtainable) edition of one of the earliest printed American judicial proceedings. Nicholas Bayard (1644-1707), nephew of Peter Stuyvesant, was mayor of New York and a member of the governor's council. When Jacob Leisler seized control of the government of New York in 1689, Bayard was a prime target, and he fled to Albany, where he was seized, brought back to the fort, and imprisoned. Finally Gov. Sloughter arrived from England and had Bayard released. In 1697 the new governor, Bellomont, accused Bayard of complicity with the previous governor in the encouragement and protection of pirates. Bayard was removed from office and later accused of encouraging sedition and mutiny and of being a Jacobite. Tried for high treason, he was sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. The present work contains the entire text of the 1701/2 proceedings, which were subsequently declared to have been illegal. The first edition, printed in New York in 1702, is known in only a few copies, in the usual institutions. This British edition, which contains additional text, is almost as scarce. HOWES B256, "b." San Juan de la Cruz born Juan de Yepes y Álvarez 1542-1591)
Sevilla: Francisco de Leedfdael, 1703. xvi+120; 511+[blank]; 23 unnumbered pages with 2 plates and 59 engravings. Folio (12 3/4" x 9") bound in contemporary vellum. (Palau 292.649) 12th impression. Juan de la Cruz was a Carmelite friar and priest of Marrano origin, and is a major figure of the Spanish Counter-Reformation, a mystic and Roman Catholic saint. He is one of thirty-six Doctors of the Church. He is known especially for his writings. He was mentored by and corresponded with the older Carmelite, Teresa of Avila. Both his poetry and his studies on the development of the soul are considered the summit of mystical Spanish literature as of all Spanish literature. He was canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726. He is considered one of the foremost poets in Spanish. Although his complete poems add up to fewer than 2500 verses, two of them, the Spiritual Canticle and the Dark Night of the Soul, are widely considered masterpieces of Spanish poetry, both for their formal style and their rich symbolism and imagery. His theological works often consist of commentaries on the poems. All the works were written between 1578 and his death in 1591. Condition: Front ties in place but broken and lacking back ties, some staining to cover, front inner hinge cracked, former owner's marginalia to front end paper which is rough at the edges, title with edge wear and some small edge tears else a good copy, internally very good.

HEYLYN Peter
1703. Folio (387 x 253 mm); letterpress title-page printed red and black, engraved frontispiece, 5 unsigned folding engraved maps: the world and four continents. A very good, large-paper, copy. Bookplates of John Peyto Verney and Robert John Verney, both Lord Willoughby de Broke, probably the 15th and 17th of that title. Contemporary speckled calf, five raised bands and red morocco label to spine. Extremities rubbed, headcap missing, joints split but binding still holding. London : Edward Brewster (et al.), The five maps are generally (but probably incorrectly) attributed to Robert Morden (d. 1703), based on an early advertisement announcing this edition. The map of America gives an interesting delineation of the western part of North America, with the Mississippi flowing into the Gulf of Mexico through Texas, California depicted as an island, a legendary inland sea, ?The Great Lake of Thongo or Thoya?, and a long curved imaginary coastline north from California. References: ESTC T107951; Worms & Baynton-Williams, on Morden.

Cambridge : John Owen & Amsterdam : Caspar Fritsch, Christoph Cellarius (1638-1707) was an important geographical writer and classical historian, generally credited with popularising the concept of ancient, mediaeval and modern periods in history. His Notitia Orbis Antiqui was first published in Leipzig in 1701. When John Owen, Printer to the University of Cambridge, undertook a new edition, he copied the maps for volume I from the Leipzig edition. He advertised this first volume in The Post Man, 17th-19th December 1702, at 15s. in sheets, although the title-page, as usual for books published late in a year, is dated 1703. A subsequent advertisement added ? The Book contains 115 sheets and 21 half sheet maps, which for the price is reckoned but 1 penny per sheet, and the maps at 3d. each, it being printed with new Characters and on very good French Demy Paper.? (idem, 5th-7th January, 1703). The project appears not to have been a success for Owen. The second volume was printed in Amsterdam, using the printing plates f … [Click Below for Full Description]

W. B. for T. Bennet and John Bosvile, London, 1703. TP + [i]-[xi] = Dedication + [xiii]-[xxxv] = Preface + [xxxvi] = Errata + [xxxvii] = detailed half title for Part I with advertisements on verso + 1-418 + [419]-[432] = Contents, Octavo. First Edition. In 1702, William Coward published Second Thoughts concerning Human Soul in which he maintained, partly based on theories found in Locke's Essay, that there is no such thing as a separate soul, but that immortal life would be conferred upon the whole man at the resurrection. The first part of Psychologia demonstates "by rational argument the established doctrine of an immaterial and hence immortal substance united with the human body" while the second part argues for this position, attacking Coward's position, point by point and accusing him of being a follower of Democritus, Lucretius, Spinoza and Hobbes - atheists all. But, most particularly, Boughton traced Coward's position back to the Essay Concerning Humane Understanding (1690) in which Locke claimed that God could give matter the capacity to think. Boughton attacked this belief claiming that the concepts of thought and extension were incompatible and that this incompatibility proved the existence of an immaterial substance in humans, i.e. an immortal soul. Anthony Collins described Boughton's book to his friend Locke as "a discourse on nothing, or on something about which no one knows anything." In his reply, Locke admitted that merely reading the fifth section of the book had convinced him that it was not worth bothering with the rest since it was written by an author … [Click Below for Full Description]
