Henrick SCHERER (Dilingen 1628 - Monaco 1704)
1703. Tratta dal "Atlas Marianus". Incisione in rame, in ottime condizioni. Rara. Interesting and original engraving taken from "Atlas Marianus" by Scherer, which devoted allegorical attention to sea-going nations at a time when much of the world had been discovered and Europeans were swarming out like bees to learn details of hitherto unknown continents, taking possessions and bringing back whatever was new to them as well as not only taking blessings to the people they met on their adventures. Heinrich Scherer was a devout Jesuit, and professor of mathematics in Munich. Designed by Johannes Degler and expertly etched by Joseph à Montaglegre of Nuremberg. Copperplate, fine example. Vincenzo da Filicaia

Louis Ellies Du Pin; William Wotton
A. and J. Churchill, Tim. Child, 1703-01-01. Hardcover. Good. 2 volume set. Folio. 33 cm. Bound in full contemporary leather. 7 spine compartments. Some attenuation to joints. Wear/rubbing to cover. Corners bumped, worn. Marbled end pages. Internally very good, with clean, unmarked pages.

Provenance: William Green, 1707 signed with flourish on front end page. Later, Bishop Michael J. O'Farrell, of the Trenton Diocese. O'Farrell's book plate on front end page. Seminary library book plate on verso.

An early English translation of DuPin's Nouvelle bibliotheque des auteurs ecclesiastiques. In this work, Du Pin attempted to cover early church biography, literary criticism, and the history of church dogma. Du Pin corresponded with William Wake, the English Archbishop about the possible unity of the English and French churches (Du Pin was a Gallican). He also worked on a plan to unify the Roman and Greek churches while in residence at Czar Peter I's French estate. It would be interesting to consider what effect Du Pin's synthesis of early Christian teachings had on his yearning for an united Christendom. The influence of Du Pin's work was not limited to a French audience, and was an important work for the Anglican Church. See Di Mauro's 2012 dissertation, Gallican Vision, Anglican Perspectives: The Reception of the Works of Louis Ellies Du Pin into England.

Stahl, Georg Ernst; Räsch, Gottfried Samuel
Halae Magdeb., Literis Christiani Henckelii, 1703, Kl.4°, 40, 12 pp., orig. Broschur. Erste Auflage!
