He had previously been Governor of Auvergne and of the French Antilles (1666 and 1667, then temporarily until 1669) He was originally an administrator, who then became an officer in the French Navy. Having replaced the frustrated Comte de Frontenac, LaBarre set out to permanently establish the fur trade in the west (in and around what is now Kingston, Ontario). In 1683 he, along with a few hundred soldiers (Troupes de la marine), made camp at the future site of Oswego, New York to wait for the Iroquois to attack. After a while, over a hundred of LaBarre's men fell ill and supplies ran out. LaBarre and his men elected to return to Montreal and abandon the west. They left Oswego and Fort Frontenac (Kingston) to the Iroquois. As punishment, the French government handed LaBarre's governorship to Jacques-René de Brisay, Marquis de Denonville, a tough, pious cavalry officer. In 1687 de la Barre was again Governor of Cayenne Jean-François de la Barre, known as the Chevalier de La Barre, was his descendant. Quoted from Wikipedia. [Attributes: First Edition]

BAYARD, NICHOLAS)
1703. (BAYARD, NICHOLAS). An Account of the Commitment, Arraignment, Tryal and Condemnation of Nicholas Bayard Esq; for High Treason, in Endeavouring to Subvert the Government of the Province of New York in America, by his Signing and Procuring others to Sign Scandalous Libels. London: Printed at New York by order of his Excellency the Lord Cornbury, and reprinted at London, 1703. Fol. 31, [1] p. Modern calf-backed marbled boards, very skillfully executed in period style. Final leaf H2 supplied from another copy, title lightly browned, else a very attractive copy. The first English (and earliest obtainable) edition of one of the earliest printed American judicial proceedings. Nicholas Bayard (1644-1707), nephew of Peter Stuyvesant, was a mayor of New York and a member of the governor's council. When Jacob Leisler seized control of the government of New York in 1689, Bayard was a prime target, and he fled to Albany, where he was seized, brought back to the fort, and imprisoned. Finally Governor Sloughter arrived from England and had Bayard released. In 1697 the new governor, Bellomont, accused Bayard of complicity with the previous governor in the encouragement and protection of pirates. Bayard was removed from office and later accused of encouraging sedition and mutiny and of being a Jacobite. Tried for high treason, he was sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. The present work contains the entire text of the 1701/2 proceedings. The unobtainable American edition, printed in New York by Bradford in 1702, is known by only a few copies, in the usual old institutions; t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Guillaume de L'ISLE
Parigi, 1703. Incisione in rame, colore originale, rinfrescato, in ottime condizioni. Map of Canada or New France and of discoveries which were made there: based on several observations and on a large number of printed or manuscript accounts by Guillaume de l'Isle of the Royal Academy of Science. Map of North America, from mid Illinois to the top of Canada, Baffin Bay, and Greenland. Of equal note, the map also includes one of the earliest references to the Rocky Mountains, the "Riviere Longue" and other features to the west. Shows coastline, mountains, lakes, rivers, trails, locations of Indian tribes and settlements. Copperplate with original outline colour, refreshed, in very good conditions. 650 500mm
