SAVAGE, JOHN
London: Printed for J. Hartley, et al., 1703, 1703. First edition. Lowndes 2194. Edges rubbed; hinges starting, but cords holding; tear in one margin, just touching the text (but with no loss); very good copy.. 8vo, contemporary paneled calf, red leather label, gilt decorated and lettered spine. A combination courtesy-manners-maxims book, using imaginary letters from the great minds of the Greeks and Romans as examples. Savage (1673-1747) was a prolific writer on antiquarian and historical subjects and a translator, particularly of foreign literature - the most notable example of which is the collaboration with Thomas Brown on the translation of Scarron's works.

ALBINOVANUS PEDO (C[aius]. Pedonis Albinovani).
12mo, bound in contemporary parchment, spine hand lettered. pp [46], 180, [27, index], [1, blank]; [2, blank], [6], 224, [24, index] + frontispiece illustration of a body being carried to a funeral pyre and 3 numismatic plates extra to the pagination in the first work; folding illustration to the second work of Mount Etna in eruption, with the city of Catana beneath and two ships in the harbour. Pencil marginalia on a few leaves; covers a bit darkened; ink name to blank recto of frontispiece; a fine, tight copy otherwise. Albinovanus Pedo was a Roman poet of the Augustan age who was a close friend of Ovid. All that certainly remains of his work is a fragment of his epic poem on Germanicus' voyage in A.D.16 to the northern ocean, which is preserved in the SUASORIAE of Seneca. "Three elegies were formerly attributed to Pedo by Scaliger; two on the death of Maecenas...and one addressed to Livia to console here for the death of her son Drusus...but it is now generally agreed that they are not by Pedo. The Consolatio has been put down as late as the 15th century as the work of an Italian imitator, there being no MSS. and no trace of the poem before the publication of the editio princeps of Ovid in 1471." - EB, 11th edition. The second work contains the poem "Aetna" attributed variously to Lucilius Junior (the 11th EB thinks him the probable author), Virgil, Cornelius Severus, and Manilius, as well as "De Aetna, ad Angelum Chabrielem, liber" by Cardinal Pietro Bembo (1470-1547). Our book was edited by J. Clericus using the pseudonym "Gorallus". Binding: Hardcover. .
