Herbert, George
Jeffery Wale, 1703, Hardcover (Full Leather), Book Condition: Good Condition, Reprint. The book came to me in its constituent parts, and has been reassembled by a bookbinder in dark brown leather, with all the faults inherent in the book still present. Page edges darkened, occasional marginalia, several pages have short tears repaired on their external margin. But surprisingly bright and clean, with a lack of foxing that more modern books have a tendency to. Please forgive the fingers and the photographs, but being freshly rebound, it is somewhat tight. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Quantity Available: 1. Category: Poetry; Inventory No: 0271772.

MAGNITSKII, Leontii Filipovich].
Moskva Sinodalna, 1703. Folio (28 x 17 cm). ll. 326, including title, printed in Cyrillic letters in red and black within typographic borders, with engraved frontispiece and plate by Mikhail Karnovskii and 3 folding letterpress tables, numerous woodcut figures in text; some leaves remargined and with tears mostly to inner margin, occasionally with minor loss of text, lacking 1 plate (last plate), red wax seals to upper fly leaf, title and first page. Near contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine with blind tooled decor in compartments; worn. One of the most important books printed during the reign of Peter the Great. Leontii Magnitskii (1669 – 1739), a prominent Russian scientist and professor at the School of Mathematics and Navigation, compiled the present work as a kind of encyclopaedia of exact sciences on the orders of Peter the Great, issued in February 1701. Magnitskii included the most up to date information on arithmetic, algebra, geometry, astronomy and navigation with the aim of 'educat[ing] Russian young men and people of all the ranks and ages.' Even more significantly, it was here that he introduced Arabic, rather than traditional Cyrillic, numbers for the first time. Lomonosov himself used this work in his studies, referring to it as 'the gates of knowledge.' Published in an edition of 2400 copies, it was used widely as a textbook for almost a century, and is something of a rarity, especially when complete. Magnitskii's work reflects the progressive thinking that started to dominate during the reign of Peter the Great. Drage 390; Sopikov 99; Fekula 4 … [Click Below for Full Description]

PUFENDORF, Samuel.
Oxford: printed by L. Lichfield, for A. and J. Churchil, & 10 others, 1703. Folio (313 x 200 mm). Contemporary panelled speckled calf, rebacked to style, red morocco spine label, raised bands, compartments decorated and ruled in gilt, boards ruled and decorated with fleurons in blind, edges sprinkled red. With the errata leaf bound at the end of the introduction. Some minor wear to extremities and marks to boards, occasional foxing, otherwise a bright, fresh copy in excellent condition. 19th-century ownership inscription of William Hodges Tylden Pattenson to front pastedown, dated 1857. First edition in English, first published as De jure Naturae et Gentium libri octo in 1672. The legal theorist, historian and theologian Samuel von Pufendorf (1632–1694) was the first professor of the Law of Nature and of Nations in a German university at Heidelberg. In his works on political science "he attempted to strike a middle path between the rationalism of Grotius and the voluntarism of Hobbes. He envisaged the state of nature as a war of all against all, from which men would wish to save themselves by joining in a society whose laws were imposed by the ruler's will. But he also argued that such laws must conform to natural law, whose duties he maintained, unlike Grotius, were imposed on man by God's will In preference to Grotius's a posteriori method, he adopted a sociological form of inquiry into man's condition in society" (The New Palgrave III, p. 1074). NEVE, Richard.]
London: printed for D. Brown, 1703 - 8vo, (xlviii), 96, 8, 97-240 pp., title-page a little browned, some headlines trimmed close, contemporary sheep, neatly rebacked. A reissue of the sheets of the first edition, published under the title of Apopiroscopy in 1702; the title-page is a cancel, printed on inferior paper to the remainder of the book. Neve was a popular English conjurer, remembered for his Merry companion, a book of magic tricks first published in 1721 and reissued as Hocus Pocus: or the cabinet of legerdemain. This book of secrets draws from a number of sources, and Neve has helpfully provided a list of 56 books which he used. He includes much on building and the choice of materials, the staining and dying of woods, carving, gilding, and varnishing. A large part of the book is taken up with matters agricultural and horticultural, including watering, pruning and grafting, fruit growing, and controlling plant diseases. Also of considerable interest is a section on preserving meat and fish, fruit, liquors and juices, vegetables, wines and so on. The final section is devoted to "Experiments and observations ludicrous," describing 37 tricks, parlour games and illusions, from "cutting a drinking glass like a screw" to "charming of serpents" and "roasting three capons. on one spit, and one shall be roasted, the other boiled, and the third raw," and including "putting a lighted candle, &c. under water," "putting one's hand into melted lead," "burning aqua vitae in the hand without burning it" and so on. A very good copy, with the bookplate of the Earls of Macclesfield. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lenton, John, composer (1657-1719).
[London, 1703]. Oblong 8vo. Musical manuscript in English, on paper written in a single cursive hand in brown ink, four staves to a page. 12 leaves: blank, title, dedication, 11 pp. of music on 6 leaves, 3 blanks. Dedication to Queen Anne on second recto. In a contemporary morocco binding, exuberantly tooled and gilt by Robert Steel, arguably the finest binder in England at the time; board edges gilt, marbled endleaves, all edges gilt. An exquisite musical manuscript, composed and bound for royal presentation on New Years' Day (then celebrated on Lady Day, March 25). Inscribed to Queen Anne of England. Signed "J.L." at the end, the pieces are marked "Overture", "Minuett" (bass), "Minuett" and "Scotch Air", one passage to be played "slow". - The violinist, singer and composer Lenton joined the ensemble of royal musicians, known as the King's Musick, in 1681 under Charles II and played at the coronations of James II and of William and Mary (cf. New Grove X, 665). As violinist, Lenton accompanied William to Holland in 1691 and contributed to the royal musical repertoire. He wrote incidental music for some dozen plays between 1682 and 1705 and accumulated the offices of Gentleman Extraordinary at the Royal Chapel (1685) and Groom of the Vestry (1708). The binder Robert Steel (fl. 1668-1711) apprenticed with Samuel Mearne and took possession of his tools after his death in 1686. In turn, one of Steel's workmen, Thomas Elliott, secured Mearne's tools and became a principal binder for the Harleian Library. - In fine condition: the splendid binding shows a repeated flower-and-folia … [Click Below for Full Description]

GRIMALDI Costantino
Bell'esempl. (timbro nel margine bianco del titolo).
