Rebound in period-style binding of black cloth and marbled boards. "White-out" used for repagination and on "Advertisement" page. Small tear in page 6. Isaac de La Peyrere was a French theologian well-known for his geographical descriptions of Greenland and Iceland. "An Account of Greenland" was first written c.1645 while La Peyrere was secretary in the French embassy at Copenhagen. Originally in French, the work was requested by M. de la Mothe de Vayer, a member of the French Academy and tutor of King Louis XIV. The first English translation was published in "Churchill's Voyages" in 1704 (second edition 1732). The text includes geographical description as well as the manners of Greenland's people.

First edition, the coveted "Rue de Canettes" state from De L'Isle's preferred publisher. The first printed map to accurately depict the course and mouth of the Mississippi River. Bookplate on front pastedown, Very clean internally, very good overall. One of two issues, apparently distinguished only by the name of the bookseller in the imprint. At the age of fourteen Burchett became clerk to Samuel Pepys, then Secretary of the Admiralty and served under him for seven years. Burchett himself later became Admiralty Secretary, serving from 1695 to 1742, and the position allowed him access to the materials from which he wrote this and a subsequent naval history, both of which are very highly regarded. Several expeditions of American interest are described herein, including voyages to Newfoundland and the West Indies, with most of the engagements being against the French. These two old maps can be easily joined together to one large map of the river Po area. The 2 maps show the Po River, across northern Italy from its source in the mountains above Turin to the Gulf of Venice, based on Cerruti's six-sheet map published by De Rossi in Rome, 1703. Engraving / etching with contemporary hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Homann Heirs' after an anonymous artist. Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Homann Heirs'. Following the long period of Dutch domination, the Homann family became the most important map publishers in Germany in the eighteenth century, the business being founded by J.B. Homann in Nuremberg about the year 1702. Soon after publishing his first atlas in 1707 he became a member of the Berlin academy of Sciences and in 1715 he was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. After the founder's death in 1724, the firm was continued under the direction of his son until 1730 and was then bequeathed to his heirs on the condition that it trades under the name of Homann Heirs. The firm remained in being until the next century and had a wide influence on map publishing in Germany. Apart from the atlases the firm published a very large number of individual maps. This atlas or pilot is a wonderful French produced small sized work that depicted a great many parts of the known world. Artists and Engravers: Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Jacques Nicolas Bellin'. Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was a French hydrographer, geographer and member of The Philosophes. His career, spanning over 50 years, caused an enormous outut in maps, particular of maritime interest. He was appointed the first Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine, and also Official Hydrographer to the French King. In smaller format, he issued the Petit Atlas Maritime (1764), which contained 580 charts, as well as maps to illustrate l' Abbe Prevost's Histoire Generale des Voyages (1746-1757). Bellin also produced a substantial number of important separately issued maps. Condition: Good, given age. Light crease top left. Original middle fold as issued.
