Carte Reduite des Isles Britanniques - Dressée aux Depost des Cartes, Plans, et Journaux de la Marine.

Original, hand-coloured engraving. The engraving (the plate) itself 55.5 cm x 90 cm. Outer Margins 67 cm wide x 97 cm high. Original Map with a 4 cm tear (repaired). Only very mild signs of foxing. A very beautiful and large map of the British Isles. Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 21 March 1772) was a French hydrographer, geographer, and member of the French intellectual group called the philosophes. Bellin was born in Paris. He was hydrographer of France's hydrographic office, member of the Académie de Marine and of the Royal Society of London. Over a 50-year career, he produced a large number of maps of particular interest to the Ministère de la Marine. His maps of Canada and of French territories in North America (New France, Acadia, Louisiana) are particularly valuable. He died at Versailles. In 1721, at age 18, he was appointed hydrographer (chief cartographer) to the French Navy. In August 1741, he became the first Ingénieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine (the French Hydrographical Office) and was named Official Hydrographer of the French King. During his reign the Depot came out with prodigious amount of charts and maps among which was a large folio format sea-charts of France, the Neptune Francois. He also produced a number of sea-atlases of the world, e.g., the Atlas Maritime and the Hydrographie Francaise. These gained fame, distinction and respect all over Europe and were republished throughout the 18th and even in the succeeding century. Bellin also came out with smaller format maps such as the 1764 Petit Atlas Maritime (5 vols.) containing 580 finely detailed charts. Bellin set a very high standard of workmanship and accuracy thus gaining for France a leading role in European cartography and geography. Many of his maps were copied by other mapmakers of Europe. He was one of the Encyclopédistes, a group of 18th century intellectuals in France who compiled the 35-volume Encyclopédie which was edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert. Bellin contributed 994 articles. The Encyclopédistes, were part of the group called philosophes among whose members were the great minds of the Age of Enlightenment, e.g., Montesquieu, Voltaire, Rousseau, Baron d'Holbach. Bellin contributed a number of maps to 15-vol. Histoire Generale des Voyages of Antoine François Prévost or simply known l'Abbe Prevost. One of these maps led to a geographical blunder whose impact reverberates to this day. This was the map of the Philippines which Bellin copied from a world-famous chart produced in 1734 by the Spanish missionary to the Philippines, Fr. Pedro Murillo Velarde. Unlike many other European mapmakers of the time who outright appropriated Murillo's map, Bellin had the intellectual integrity to fully credit Murillo as his source, an open acknowledgement shown in the title cartouche of Bellin's map which came out the same year as the original work by Murillo. Shown in Bellin's map was an island named "Limasava", a word invented in 1667 by Spanish friar, Fr. Francisco Combés, S.J., to refer to the way station of the Armada de Molucca under the command of the Portuguese captain-general Fernao de Magalhaes during its navigation in Philippine waters. Combés, who had not read a single eyewitness account of the Magellan expedition relied on two sources, the hopelessly garbled Italian translation of the Antonio Pigafetta account by Giovanni Battista Ramusio and the secondhand account by Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas. Ramusio wrote the fleet anchored in MarchApril 1521 in Butuan in Mindanao, and from there sailed for Cebu with a brief stopover at "Messana". In the authentic Pigafetta account, the port was an isle named Mazzaua while the stopover isle was named Gatighan. Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas gave a faithful narration of the Mazzaua anchorage. Combés disregarded de Herrera's version and adopted Ramusio's. He wrote that Magellan's fleet had anchored at Butuan and from their sailed for Cebu making a stop at a way station he named Limasaua. Five years earlier than Combés, Fr. Francisco Colín wrote the Armada moored at Butuan from MarchApril 1521 where Magellan and his men together with the natives celebrated an Easter Sunday mass on 31 March 1521. From Butuan the fleet sailed for Cebu making a brief stop at a way station he called "Dimasaua", an invented word meaning "this is not the Mazagua of Antonio de Herrera where supposedly an Easter Sunday mass was held which I already said happened in Butuan." This episode was projected in the 1734 map made by Murillo who used Combés name, "Limassava" not "Dimasaua" which map Bellin copied. In 1789, Augustinian Carlo Amoretti, Italian Encyclopedist and librarian of Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, discovered the authentic Italian manuscript of Antonio Pigafetta among the scattered holdings of the library. Here it came out that the port of MarchApril 1521 was not Butuan but Mazaua. Amoretti, who himself had not read any of five eyewitness reports of the incident including two French versions of Pigafetta's account, asserted in a footnote that Mazaua was probably the isle named Limasava in Bellin's map, thus interchanging the real port of Mazaua with the way station Gatighan. Largely with the appearance of the eyewitness account of Ginés de Mafra, the only seaman in Magellan's fleet to return to Mazaua, whose testimony reveals a concrete, measurable description of Mazaua, the skein starting from the garbled version of Pigafetta by Ramusio to the mishandling by Combés to Bellin and finally to Amoretti has been unraveled: Pigafetta's Gatighan is Bellin's Limasava.         Delft.

Pieter Smith, [1703]., Amsterdam, - A true topographical monument Large engraved wall map, full original colour, on four sheets, joined, surrounded by 33 views of the city and its architecture, mounted on board, a few minor areas of loss skilfully repaired. This fine plan was produced under the stewardship of Dirck van Bleyswijck. Van Bleyswijck (1639-1681) was born into a prominent Delft family and would later become sheriff, orphan master and burgomaster. In 1667, at the tender age of seventeen he published the first volume of his Beschryvinge der Stadt Delft (The Description of Delft), the second volume of which would appear in 1680. The work detailed the history of the city, its monuments, and its most famous historical figures. So impressed were his fellow citizens by his work that he was made burgomaster of Delft in 1675, and was commissioned by them to coordinate the production of a large wall map of the city. The surveying for the plan was carried out by Jacob Spoors, with Johannes de Ram being engaged to engrave the map. The fine cartouches that adorn the plan were the work of the great Baroque artist Romeyn de Hooghe. The resultant work depicts Delft in birds-eye view with the houses, churches, public buildings, streets, and canals all beautifully rendered. Beyond the city walls lie a patchwork of fields, in which can been seen numerous cows, together with the occasional stork, which were encouraged to build nests in the city, as they were believed to bring good luck. The cartouches tell of Delft's maritime and trading might, from Neptune mounted on a sea horse to the upper left to citizens depicted surrounded by the city's most important products of faience and cloth, in the lower right. Above and below the plan are prospects of Delft and Delf Haven respectively. Also to the borders are 24 views of the city and its suburbs; the four coats-of-arms of the principal burgomasters; and a brief description of the city. The present work is the second issue of 1703 with the Armentarium, which had been built in 1692, depicted for the first time. Only two institutional copies of the map can be located: one at the National Gallery of Art Library, Washington DC, and the other at the Stadhuis, Delft. 1590 by 1760mm (62.5 by 69.25 inches); Framed: 1790 by 1990mm (70.5 by 78 inches).         Micrographia Curiosa sive Rerum minutissimarum Observationes, quae ope Microscopii recognitæ & expressæ curiosorum Naturæ Exploratorum utilitati proponuntur.

      - Added engraved title & 40 engraved plates (three are folding). 1 p.l., 106 pp., one blank leaf. Small 4to, cont. English panelled calf (corners renewed, rebacked, some dampstaining in gutter at foot to first ten leaves). Rome: A. de Rubeis, 1703. First separate edition, originally published as the second part of the author's Observationes circa viventia (1691). Our edition - which is actually the original printing of the second part with a new title-page - is very rare with only one copy located by WorldCat. Buonanni (1738-1725), one of the most learned Jesuits of his time, was a pupil of Athanasius Kircher, and succeeded his master as teacher of mathematics at the Collegium Romanum. This work is one of the earliest Italian treatises on microscopy. It contains interesting observations on early microscopes and a precise description of Buonanni's own compound microscopes, which are illustrated on two plates. The rest of the plates show objects seen through the microscope, including a number of illustrations of insects. "The quality of his illustrations of various insects was excellent - particularly those of the fly, louse, mite, flea, and mosquito. Indeed, his drawings of the Culex pipiens (common house mosquito) are the best of the seventeenth century)."-D.S.B., II, p. 591. Very good copy. Duplicate from the British Museum with their duplicate stamp dated 1787. Armorial bookplate of Sir John Ingilby Bart. (1758-1815), M.P. and Fellow of the Royal Society. ? First edition, one of two variant printings in 1703, this version not in the BL. Unlike the smaller glossaries that began to appear in some architectural works in the mid-17th century '... it is not a series of brief definitions or subjects discussed in a parent treatise but a complete work in itself in which the diversified material is brought together from many different sources and arranged alphabetically under catchwords'.

Georgii Graevii et Jacobi Gronovii, in Folio XXIV. Voluminibus reperiuntur, Ordine alphabetico digestus

31 pp. 8vo, cont. calf-backed marbled boards. Leyden: P. van der Aa, 1703. First edition and rare. Graevius (1632-1703), German classical scholar and critic, was professor at Utrecht. He had a high reputation as a teacher and was a particular favorite of William III of England, who made him historiographer royal. His editions of the classics marked a distinct advance in scholarship. He is best remembered for his Thesaurus Antiquitatum Romanorum (1694-99), which is the first encyclopedic compilation of the knowledge of the ancient Roman world. His friend and colleague Jacobus Gronovius (1645-1716), Dutch classical scholar, published a complementary work - Thesaurus Antiquitatum Graecarum (1697-1702) - which dealt with ancient Greece. Both are compilations of earlier works by more than 120 contributors; they became standard reference tools throughout the 18th century. Following Graevius's death in early 1703, Peter van der Aa, the publisher of the two thesauri, decided to stimulate sales by issuing the present catalogue. It was designed to be a guide to the contents of each series. It lists the contributors and their texts found in the two thesauri. References to each series, volume, and page number are given. Fine copy.

After publishing several general atlases himself he became the associate of Pierre Mariette, a publisher of prints. In 1647 Sanson accused the Jesuit Philippe Labbe of plagiarizing him in his Pharus Galliae Antiquae; in 1648 he lost his eldest son Nicolas, killed during the Fronde. Among the friends of his later years was the great Condé. He died in Paris on 7 July 1667. Two younger sons, Adrien (d. 1708) and Guillaume (d. 1703), succeeded him as geographers to the king.In 1692 Hubert Jaillot collected Sanson's maps in an Atlas nouveau.
