Circle of Knowledge #13, also citing Moreri: "The title does not convey the full import of Moreri's work, which contains also much geographical and biographical material. His book is arranged alphabetically, with articles on places, people, books, and general subjects intermixed. Encyclopaedias modeled on it were published in Germany, Switzerland, and England; Peter the Great is supposed to have commanded a Russian translation, and an Italian translation was projected." Lund, Johann (1638-1686)
Hamburg: G. Liebernickel, 1701. Quartio. . Half-title, frontispiece, 1090 pages, 68 leaves, plans, plates, portrait, (title continues: und funff unterschiedenen Buchern....) The plates were engraved by Johann Wilhelm Michaelis (d. 1737) and they depict the great furniture and altars of ancient Judaism from the Tabernacle to the Temple of Solomon. He detailed the service of the Levites and many fine points of the law. Modern scholarship as evidence by Jacob Deutsch's work on Judaism in Christian eyes; which emphasized a study of the Hebrew Bible with references to the early post-biblical period of Jewish practice. Johann Lund was felt exact representations from a scientific aspect would add to the remarkable spiritual aspects of the temple. After his death his son Thomas Lund began to underwrite the expense of his works which dealt with the public service, the nature of both the Levitical High Priest and the regular priests, as well as the worship and habits of these sacred places. Of particular interest are the vivid engravings including that of Moloch. Bound in original vellum, the title page is in red and black, leaves display some toning. A very nice copy with wonderful engravings.

SARROVIRA (Miquel).
Barcelona, per Rafel Figuero`, 1701. Petit in-4. (1f.blanc). 4ff. 51pp. (1f.blanc). Brunet I, 1735 - Graesse 2, 102. Raro completo. 309 / 29 315

Early inscription to title-page. Scarce first edition of this standard work, one of the most important histories of the Egyptian Kingdom of the Ptolemies (323 B.C. to 30 B.C.), considered one of the most influential works on this complicated and perplexed part of ancient history. The work quickly became the main reference-work on the subject. It is especially noteworthy in its inclusion of Ptolemaeic coinage and is one of the first modern histories of the Ptolemies to not merely treat the subject chronologically; it is the first to explain this period by help of coins. The Ptolemaic Kingdom was a Hellenistic kingdom in Egypt. It was ruled by the Ptolemaic dynasty that Ptolemy I Soter founded after the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC-which ended with the death of Cleopatra VII and the Roman conquest in 30 BC. The Ptolemies were the Greek Rulers … [Click Below for Full Description]

Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, and engraved title-page, and a profusion of medals depicting the emperors. 8vo, contemporary paneled calf, the covers with blind ruled borders surrounding central panels tooled and decorated in blind at their borders, the spine with compartments decorated with double ruled panels an central gilt devices, red-brown morocco lettering label gilt. [16], viii, 591,[1 ads. [4] pp. A handsome and well preserved copy of this rare book. Some wear to the edges and hinges, but a sound a pleasing survival in its original state. RARE FIRST EDITION OF THIS FINE HISTORY OF THE ROMAN EMPERORS BEGINNING WITH THAT OF MARCUS AURELIUS ANTONINUS and carrying through with Commodus and on to Severus. Marcus Aurelius Antoninus was the last great proponent of Stoicism. His Meditations are read still to this day and aside from the first book, in which he pays his respects to his teachers and influences, the work has no formal structure, which gives it the character of a diary or journal and makes its reflections more personal and immediate. The meditations were written by the Emperor while on military campaigns during the last ten years of his life. The journal entries "record his thoughts about the meaning of world-order and the relationship of man...they show him to be disillusioned and despondent, seeking fortitude against the fear of death, the cares of this world and the misdeeds and injustices of others." Those that followed Aureliu … [Click Below for Full Description]

OTTO VAN VEEN
Henrico y Cornelio, Amberes, 1701. [Click Below for Full Description]
