Big 12.5" x 8.5" x 2.75" Book. Wonderful shape for the age, See description for more pictures and details. A Companion to the Temple: Or, a Help to Devotion in the Daily Use of the Common Prayer in Four Parts By Thomas Comber Dean of Durham 1701 Publication, 4th Edition Corrected and Enlarged This is a devotional for the Book of Common Prayer with lots of helps and outlines. It looks like it covers all services of the Prayer Book: Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, Communion, Baptism, Litany, etc. See inside cover picture for the complete list. It is a large book at 12.5" x 5.5" x 2.75". The book is in what I think wonderful condition, but I do not have many books this old. This is the only one like this I have ever seen. I am really sad to part with this but I am retired and it is time to pass it on a good home. It has a nice book plate inside dated 1719, but the book was published 1701 as you can see in the photos. The pages are tightly bound, the spine is still flexible. There is slight brown spots on some pages (of course) and the one corner has the leather broken a way, see picture of it. See the many pictures. I am trying to disclose all the flaws and have a lot of pictures so you see what you are getting but overall this book is in great condition for its age. If you are really interested make me an offer. Size: It is 12.5" x 5.5" x 2.75". For more information on Prayer Book Editions go to flutesonline.com/classic.

SANTORIO, Santorio (Sanctorius).
First edition to be edited with a commentary by Dr. Martin Lister. With this book Santorio founded the physiology of metabolism, and introduced quantitative experimentation into biological science. He introduced exact methods of measurement, with himself as the subject. Using the balance as an instrument of weight control, the pulse-clock and the thermometer, he measured pulse-rate, respiration, body temperature and daily variations in weight relative to ingestion and excretion. Throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Santorio was regarded, with Harvey, as one of the greatest figures in the history of physiology. See G&M 573 (first edition of 1614); also Foster, Lectures on the history of physiology, pp. 145-147.

Folio atlas (560 by 420mm), double-page engraved allegorical title with coats-of-arms by Romeyn de Hooghe, 32 double-page engraved maps, all with fine original hand-colour, original red quarter calf over publisher's boards, rubbed. First and only edition of this splendid cadastral atlas. In 1695, the ‘Landen van Voorne' commissioned the surveyor Heyman van Dijck to map the territory of Voorne (South Holland). Romeyn de Hooghe was requested to decorate the maps, but would eventually only execute the title-page, which is a typical example of his rich allegorical imagery; decorated with the coats-of-arms of the administrators of Voorne, with the arms of the ‘Opperdijkgraaf', Jacob Frederik Baron van Beyeren van Schagen, prominently placed in the centre. Jan and Caspar Luyken adorned the highly detailed maps with the coat-of-arms of the region depicted, often against the background of a rustic scene. Brunet I, 1735 - Graesse 2, 102. Raro completo. 309/29

Villagutierre Sotomayor, Juan de
Lucas Antonio de Bedmar y Narvaez, [Madrid, 1701. [64],660,[34]pp. plus engraved frontispiece plate. Folio. Contemporary full limp vellum, manuscript spine title, modern leather cords and ties. Moderate wear and soiling, some old ink notations on front cover. Minor dampstaining and toning, early Spanish ownership signature and later inked stamp of Alfred Tozzer on titlepage. Overall good plus. Lacking colophon leaf and front free endpaper. A handsome copy of this story of the Itza people in what is now northern Guatemala, who finally succumbed to Spanish forces in 1697. Although the author never set foot in the New World, his high position in the Consejo de Indias and other royal councils gave him access to much important documentation for the writing of this prized history of the conquest of the Izta Maya and the attempted conquest of the Lacandón Indians during the last decades of the 17th century; the conquest of Petén and the misadventures of Roque de Soberanis y Senteno and Martín de Urzúa, two governors of the Yucatán, make for very exciting reading. This is the first published book dedicated solely to the history of the Yucatán and the Maya, here offered in its first edition, second issue (with the corrected catchword "glas" at the foot of the recto of preliminary leaf F2). Bedmar y Narvaez printed the titlepage in black and red and the text is in double-column format. This copy contains both the engraved "frontispiece" and the black and red titlepage, but, as usual, not the very rare colophon. Some browning to two leaves in the first index (signature e,1-2). ¶ First edition. The work is, in effect, an enlarged edition of the "Thesaurus geographicus" (1695) omitting all except one of the small town plans but with additional maps marked as "New""(Shirley T.MOLL-1b, where the worldmap is missing). In 1701 he published A System of Geography, the first of his own publishing. Although it contained no fundamental changes in the presentation of his previous work, it helped him to assert himself as a freelance cartographer. Over the years, the work itself as well as individual maps were of influence on other publishers, as they were frequently copied and re-issued.
