SCHENK, Peter (1645-1715)
Amsterdam: ex formis Petri Schenck, [maps dated 1701-1706]. Folio. (21 x 12 3/4 inches). Engraved throughout: title, double-page table of comparative distances within Europe, 49 double-page or folding maps, all with contemporary hand-colouring. (General oxidization of the green to brown as usual, with resultant splits to 17 maps, 5 of these with losses to the engraved area, the table detached and loosely inserted with splits and losses). Old green cloth-backed marbled paper-covered boards (rubbed, extremities worn). An early issue of this composite atlas with original hand-colouring. Koeman notes that there is no set number of maps required for Schenk's Atlas, as it was essentially assembled to order according to the original purchaser's requirements, and the work of a number of cartographers was included. Koeman notes examples with 47, 86, 108, and 160 maps. The present copy includes Schenk's important world map "Diversa Orbis Terrae", G. Valck's double-hemisphere map of the poles, Schenk's "America septrionalis"; Africa, Asia, an interesting map recording the track of solar eclipse across Europe on 12 May 1706, then a series of maps of Scandinavia, Russia, Europe, the Mediterranean, and ending with an extraordinary map of Utopia "Accurata Utopiae tabula". cf. Defoe, Daniel
1701 - The second edition, published in 1701. One of Defoe's most significant - and satirical - efforts. The title page notes the 1701 publication, but omits any information relating to the publisher, or their location. There is a single blank to the beginning of the book, and seven blank leaves at the end. Sixty pages of text. This copy has been bound ( most probably nineteenth century ) by the noted Scottish firm of Kerr and Richardson incorporating the original titling band into the spine. Bound in calfskin which has been tooled in gold to the edges. A very good copy with some uniform rubbing and light worming to the lower forecorner of some of the pages. A work of some considerable significance. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
