1701. Der Wunderwurdige Juden- und Heidentempel, Darinn derselben Gottes- und Gotzen-Dinst eroffnet und gezeigt wirdAn early attempt at comparative religion, that discusses various world religions (by continent), sects and pagan idolatry. "The emphasis is still placed on the adventurous and the curious, but much material has been collected here. The viewpoint is, of course, Christian" (Faber du Faur). A rare work in which Nerreter uses Ross' 'Pansebeia' as a springboard. Nerreter especially added a wealth of information on Egyptian religion, and to the sections on Africa and the Americas. His final essay on idolatry was also a new addition in this edition.Nurnberg: Wolfgang Mortiz Endters, 1701. First edition thus.8vo. VRIES, Klaas de.
Very rare first edition of a standard practical manual on the art of navigation, by the virtually unknown Klaas de Vries, teacher of mathematics in Amsterdam. In the preface De Vries summarises the content of the book, which is profusely illustrated (mostly with diagrams) and includes letterpress tables of the tides, the time lag between the positions of the sun and moon for the years 1701-1710, the declination of the sun, etc., as well as 4 engraved plates of a compass rose, the use of the Jakob's staff, the "Platte Paskaart" and the "Wassende graadige paskaart". The work is concluded by sections on the winds one can encounter on the journey from Holland to the Dutch East Indies; how to sail to the East Indies in autumn, during monsoons, etc. Ad 2: The corrected Loots edition of tables of trigonometric functions and logarithms. The note to the reader explicitly states that the tables are based on those published by Adriaen Vlacq in 1665 (Tabulae sinuum ...), but that they have been corrected, in part based on comparisons with the folio editions of Pitiscus for the trigonometric functions and Henry Briggs for the logarithms. The present copy lacks the tables of logarithms, but its collation and signing otherwise agrees with the somewhat irregular ones given in Crone. Good copy, the Schat-kamer complete with the errata leaf. The Tafelen lacks the two tables of logarithms (45 leaves, 2A1-M1). Binding somewhat dirty and stained, with the head of the spine chipped and cracked.Crone Library 373 & 374; cf. Bierens de Haan 5196 (1727 ed.); Cat. 1701. Penn William William Penn Appoints Customs Officer for Kent County to Enforce Navigation Acts Manuscript Document Signed, "Wm Penn," 1 page, 16.75" x 9.25", Philadelphia, March 10, 1701, on parchment, an appointment for customs agent (with name left blank) for Kent County, Delaware. Folds with a few minor holes filled in, moderate soiling, a few spots of mild ink erosion, else very good condition with an intact paper seal affixed at top left. Citing several acts of Parliament concerning trade and customs, including "... an Act for the Encouragement of trade, and One Act of Parliament... an Act for the Encouragement of Trade, and one Act of Parliament... an act to prevent the planting of tobacco in England... and Act of Parliament ... for the encouragement of the Greenland and Eastland Trades and for the better Servicing the plantation Trade and one act of Parliament... for preventing frauds and Regulating Abuses in the plantation Trade...", Penn authorizes the appointment of a yet unnamed customs agent for the county of Kent. William Penn, who had established the colony of Pennsylvania in the 1680s, desired direct access to the sea for his fledgling settlements on the Delaware River. Penn's charter specifically excluded the town of New Castle or any of the lands within a twelve mile radius of the town which was then part of the Duke of York's 1664 grant. Prior to departing to America, Penn convinced the duke to lease him the western shore of Delaware Bay which became known as "the Lower Counties on the Delaware." … [Click Below for Full Description]

Le Bon Dieu
Liege, France: Jean-Francois Broncart, 1701. The text is in remarkable condition for being over 300 years old. There is some browning and staining on certain pages, but overall the pages are clear. The binding is sound, and although the leather is cracked in places and looks quite worn, it has been treated and is stable. Corners are dog-eared through years of use. Below is an accurate description of this Bible from an auction several years ago. It gives a better overview of this work than I could devise. All I can all is that this three volume Bible has just about everything a French or Latin Bible scholar would want in the way of information, Bible text and commentary, as well as several very fine maps in good condition. I have seen this Bible listed before, but usually there are volumes missing. Description: BIBLE IN FRENCH AND LATIN. La Sainte Bible traduite en François, le Latin de la Vulgate à côté . . . Nouvelle Édition. Engraved frontispiece; 4 folding engraved maps (3 of the Holy Land, one of the known world in the Gospel period); folding plate of multiple biblical subjects, including small maps of the Garden of Eden and the Exodus; etched divisional headpieces by Jacobus Harrewijn and G. Du Vivier. 3 volumes. Folio, 343x223 mm, contemporary calf gilt, spine ends chipped, one compartment missing from Volume 2 spine; small blank portions of the titles excised and restored, occasional toning, scattered minor stains. Liège: Jean-François Broncart, 1701 Notes: Port Royal version of the French text. The end matter includes a Gospel harmony, chronology, glossary of Heb … [Click Below for Full Description]

Second edition, revised by Henri Basnage de Beauval, of Furetiere's controversial complete scientific and technological dictionary, that rewarded him with an unprecedented expulsion from the Academie Francaise. Volume I includes the preface to the first edition by philosopher Pierre Bayle. "It is, however, for his work as a lexicographer that Furetiere is known today, and his Dictionnaire universel des arts et des sciences (1690) remains an indispensable tool for scholars of seventeenth-century French literature and culture. Furetiere conceived of his work as a dictionary of things, rather than of words, and so presented a variety of technical, medical, and scientific terms within its pages. As such, the Dictionnaire universel served as a precursor to the encyclopedic dictionaries of the eighteenth century. "At the same time that Furetiere was preparing his dictionary, members of the Academie Francaise were compiling material for their own dictionary, a project begu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Villagutierre Sotomayor, Juan de
Madrid: Lucas Antonio de Bedmar y Narvaez, 1701. Engraved "frontispiece," [32] leaves, 660pp., [17] leaves. Folio. 19th-century Spanish sheep ("pasta española"). Covers abraded, pinhole-type worming in spine, loss of lower inch of spine leather to insects. Text tanned (due to impurities in water during paper manufacture). Small insect damage to margins of first four leaves, not touching any text; similar small damage in inner margins of last four leaves. Overall, a decent copy of a scarce work. Although the author never set foot in the New World, his high position in the Consejo de Indias and other royal councils gave him access to much important documentation for the writing of this prized history of the conquest of the Izta Maya and the attempted conquest of the Lacandón Indians during the last decades of the 17th century; the conquest of Petén and the misadventures of Roque de Soberanis y Senteno and Martín de Urzúa, two governors of the Yucatán, make for very exciting reading. This is the first published book dedicated solely to the history of the Yucatán and the Maya, here offered in its first edition, first issue (with the incorrect catchword "gla" at the foot of the recto of the twenty-second preliminary leaf). Bedmar y Narvaez printed the titlepage in black and red, and the text is in double-column format. This copy contains both the engraved "frontispiece" and the black and red titlepage, but, as usual, not the very rare colophon. Although touted as "Primera parte" on the titlepage, there were no further parts; this HISTORIA... is complete, "all published." PALA … [Click Below for Full Description]

Aesop. Phaedrus.
1701. Amsterdam: Typographia Francisci Halmae, 1701. 4to, engraved general title, letterpress red & black title page with allegorical engraved vignette. 18 full-page copper-engraved plates by Jan van Vianen, each featuring six circular images, and 38 in-text reproductions, engraved decorative initials, and head- and tailpieces. With the oversize fold-out engraved portrait of Joannes Gulielmus, Prince of Nassau. Later polished calf c.1750, headcap repaired, upper hinge repaired. § Phaedrus (15 BC - AD 50, Italy), was a "Roman fabulist, the first writer to Latinize whole books of fables, producing free versions in iambic metre of Greek prose fables then circulating under the name of Aesop." (Ency. Brit.). This de luxe edition was especially created for the Prince of Nassau, profusely illustrated with fine engravings. Dibdin spoke highly of it in his Greek and Latin Classics (4th edition): "I have always considered this as a correct and very sumptuous edition. It is ornamented with a great number of small plates, or medallions, in which the subject of the fable is very ably and spiritedly executed. The type is peculiarly rich and bold, and is hardly equalled by any Dutch edition of a classic." (p. 285). Landwehr F163.

ALBERGATI LUDOVISI, Niccolò
1701. Mm. 275x205. [Click Below for Full Description]
