VIVIANI, Vincenzo
Florence, Brigonci, 1701. Folio (330 x 235 mm), pp [xxiv] 12, with two folding engraved plates and an engraved portrait of Galileo bound at end; a fine large, clean copy in contemporary carta rustica with blue paper spine.A large-paper copy of final published work of Viviani, representing the culmination of his efforts to reconstruct a lost manuscript by Aristaeus the Elder on the exposition of curves. Nearing the end of his life, Viviani also took the opportunity of the present work's publication to offer a final tribute to his mentor, Galileo: in 1693 Viviani had commenced the transformation of his own home into a veritable shrine to that figure, and here provides for the reader three engravings illustrating his 'Casa Deo Data'.'Viviani's first project was an attempted restoration of a work by Aristaeus the Elder, De locis solidis secunda divinatio geometrica, which Viviani undertook when he was twenty-four. Aristaeus' work is believed to have been the first methodical exposition of the curves discovered by Menaechmus; but since it has been entirely lost, it is difficult to estimate how close Viviani came to the original work' (DSB). A rudimentary version of Viviani's effort was printed in Florence in 1673; the present volume is the full work as corrected and expanded by the author (as explained on the title page).Historiographically speaking, the work makes quite an effort to resuscitate the reputation and standing of Galileo; Viviani proudly notes that he is the student of 'magni Galilaei' on the title page and devotes a curious section at the end of the work entirely t … [Click Below for Full Description]

EULER, Leonhard.
"First edition of the work, which enunciated for the first time the principles of hydrostatics, with outstanding provenance: the copy of the great explorer and mathematician Charles Marie de La Condamine (1701-1774). A very good and entirely unrestored copy, in contemporary binding, of Euler's first large work on fluid mechanics. "Together, these [two volumes] are second among the great treatises on rational mechanics by which Euler created the field as we now know it... [in this work Euler] builds a 'mansion of analysis' that includes all the elementary parts of hydrostatics as we know them today." (Enetröm).

Provenance: La Condamine was a French explorer, geographer, and mathematician. "He spent ten years in present-day Ecuador measuring the length of a degree latitude at the equator and preparing the first map of the Amazon region based on astronomical observations... Newton had posited [in his Principia] that the Earth is not a perfect sphere, but bulges around the equator and is flattened at the poles. Newton's opinion had raised a huge controversy among French scientists. Pierre Louis Maupertuis, Alexis Claude Clairaut, and Pierre Charles Le Monnier traveled to Lapland, where they were to measure the length of several degrees of latitude orthogonal to the arctic circle, while Louis Godin, Pierre Bouguer, and La Condamine were sent to South America to perform similar measurements around the equator... The scientific results of the expedition were unambiguous: the Earth is indeed a spheroid flattened at the poles as was believed by Newton." (Wiki … [Click Below for Full Description]

Matthäus SEUTTER (1678 - 1757) Augsburg circa 1745. Copper engraving with original colour, 49,5 x 57 cm (22 x 19 inches).
- Map shows south of Spain, embracing the area between Motril in the province of Granada in the east, Gibraltar in the south and Cadiz and Sanlúcar de Barrameda in the west. In-set maps show Menorca, Ceuta and views of Malaga, Gibraltar and Cadiz. The map shows the area after the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714), when Gibraltar was given To Britain in 1713 in the Treaty of Utrecht to secure Britain's withdrawal from the war. The note in the in-set map of Ceuta mentiones it was a part of Morocco under Moulay Ismail from 1694 to 1727. Minorca temporarily became a British possession in 1708 until 1756, when France captured the island after the Siege of Fort St Philip during the the Seven Years' War. Matthäus Seutter (1678-1757) was one of the most prominent German publishers of the 18th century. He started his apprenticeship under the most famous engraver of the time Johann-Baptist Homann. In 1732 he received a title of Imperial Geographer by German Emperor Charles VI. After Matthäus’ death his son took over the firm for mere five years, until his death in 1762. After that the firm was divided between the printing firm Probst and Seutter’s son-in-law Tobias Conrad Lotter. The map can be dated after 1741, when Seutter received a privilege, mentioned in the cartouche under the title.

Villagutierre Sotomayor, Juan de.
Lucas Antonio de Bedmar y Narvaez, 1701. Although the author never set foot in the New World, his high position in the Consejo de Indias and other royal councils gave him access to much important documentation for the writing of this prized history of the conquest of the Izta Maya and the attempted conquest of the Lacandón Indians during the last decades of the 17th century; the conquest of Petén and the misadventures of Roque de Soberanis y Senteno and Martín de Urzúa, two governors of the Yucatán make for very exciting reading. => This is the first published book dedicated solely to the history of the Yucatán and the Maya, here offered in its first edition, first issue (with the incorrect catchword "gla" at the foot of the recto of the 22nd preliminary leaf). Bedmar y Narvaez printed the title-page in black and red and the text is in double-column format. This copy bears both the engraved "frontispiece" and the black and red title-page, but, as usual, not the very rare colophon. Although touted as "Primera parte" on the title-page, there were no further parts; this Historia is complete, "all published."

Some textengravings, some wood-engravings in the text. With all 43 engraved maps interspersed in the text. A bit of corner of one leaf (pp.313-14) gone affecting a small part of the frame on the last map (Chili, Magellans-Land). Printed on good paper, a few scattered brownspots, mainly in first part. Some browning to two leaves in the first index (signature e,1-2). ¶ First edition. The work is, in effect, an enlarged edition of the "Thesaurus geographicus" (1695) omitting all except one of the small town plans but with additional maps marked as "New""(Shirley T.MOLL-1b, where the worldmap is missing). In 1701 he published A System of Geography, the first of his own publishing. Although it contained no fundamental changes in the presentation of his previous work, it helped him to assert himself as a freelance cartographer. Over the years, the work itself as well as individual maps were of influence on other publishers, as they were frequently copied and re-issued.
