This is the scarce Aesop Fables collection by the French scholar, Jean Baudoin; the small-format etchings carry on a much-celebrated woodcut history for the Fables ... As early as 1593, these woodcut templates had been processed into a cycle of etchings, and the work of Pieter van der Borcht, which is used again here in Baudoin's presentation of the Fables. - Rare edition, contains 117 fables. A remarkably preserved copy, fine internally, amazingly bright with no significant wear. "The life of Aesop" (30 Texcupfer, p. 11-93).

Reliure à la fanfare de type tardif en maroquin rouge aux petits fers filigranés, dos à nerfs orné d'entrelacs et fers filigranés avec une fleur de lys dans le médaillon central, roulette intérieure et sur les coupes, tranches dorées. Cette reliure présente quelques fers, au dos et sur les plats, identiques à celle reproduite par G.B. Hobson, Les Reliures à la Fanfare, 1935, Pl. XXII b, aux armes de la duchesse d'Orléans, également sur une Semaine Sainte imprimée par Dezaillier en 1701. C'est Esmerian, dans ses Douze tableaux synoptiques sur la reliure au XVII siècle, qui a rapproché une quinzaine de reliures aux fers similaires sous l'appellation de l'Atelier des Caumartin en référence aux armes de cette famille frappées sur plusieurs d'entre-elles. Cet atelier est repéré d'abord vers 1652 puis de 1685 à 1701. Mors épidermés, menus frottements, petits trous de vers en pied du dos, 2 coins avec manque de cuir, la p. de titre est défraîchie avec manque de papier angulaire et inscriptions anciennes au verso, perte de quelques lettres à la p.1 de la préface, p. 287 en partie détachée.

Gervaise, who spent four years as a missionary in Siam, returned to France in 1685 with two orphaned sons of "Daën Ma-Allé," a refugee prince of Makassar who had died at Siam. Im vorliegenden Exemplar fehlen die Blätter mit dem "Kurtzgefassten Inhalt eines jeden Capitels" ab Kapitel XX des 1. Buches. Ebenfalls fehlt das erste Textblatt (A1). Mit separatem Titelblatt für das 6. Buch sowie für "Simplicissimi Pralerey und Gespräng" - Titelauflage des ersten Bandes der 2. Gesamtausgabe von 1785 (vgl. Goedeke III, 254, 25), die in 3 Bänden erschien. Die Anzahl Kupfer variiert, scheint hier aber am vollständigsten zu sein. - Exemplar aus der Bibliothek von "Albrecht Friedrich von Erlach,Schloss Hindelbank (Wegmann 1840) und von Bernhard von Steiger (Wegmann 6804). Zusätzlich auf dem Vorderdeckel das Wappensupralibros der von Erlach. - Einband beschabt, Rückenschild mit kleiner Absplitterung. Papier wie immer durchgehend mässig gebräunt und zu Beginn etwas fingerfleckig. Das erste Kupfer alt hinterlegt, einige Kupfer mit Einrissen und kleinen Eckausrissen.

Romae, ex Typographia Ioannis Francisci de Buagnis 1701 - COSTANTINI, Francesco Maria. - Nacque in Venarotta (Ascoli Piceno) il 19 febbr. 1639 da Giovan Domenico, patrizio di antica nobilté marchigiana, e da Dea Massini, cugina del famoso giureconsulto ascolano Serafino Massini. Primogenito di dieci figli, ricevette in famiglia la sua prima educazione e frequenté poi le scuole secondarie nella vicina Ascoli. Nel 1658 fu ammesso al collegio Montalto di Bologna, ove compé brillantemente gli studi di diritto, manifestando subito la sua non comune perspicacia giuridica; nel 1661 si addottoré in utroque e ritorné ad Ascoli ove inizié la pratica legale presso lo zio Francesco Costantini. Nel 1667 si trasferé a Roma ove si fece presto conoscere ed apprezzare per la qualité della sua oratoria forense, per la perizia nel diritto e per la limpida onesté professionale.
