Plato (with notes by M. Dacier)
London: Printed for A. Bell, at the Cross-Keys and Bible in Cornhill, near Stocks-Market, 1701. First English language edition. Two volumes, bound as one in contemporary full calf, expertly rebacked. Octavo (pages 194 x 124mm) collating: Title, Table of Dialogues, 328; Title, 3-336; complete. First title page extended at the inner margin, p. 2 with a few passages marked in pencil, otherwise a Very Good copy. Translated into English and abridged by Joseph Stennett. Two Dialogues: "The Apology of Socrates" and "Phaedo," had previously been translated into English by William Charleton and published in 1675, but the others: "Alcibiades 1 & 2", "Theages," "Euryphron," "Criton," "Laches," "Protagoras" and "The Rivals" are printed in English for the first time. With 22 copies held in institutions worldwide (OCLC), our assumption is that most were placed early on because only one copy shows in the auction records of ABPC and Americana Exchange. "Amidst a great diversity, both of subject and treatment, the dialogues are pervaded by two dominant impulses: a love of truth and a passion for human improvement. While nowhere is a definite system laid down, it has been truly said that the germs of all ideas can be found in Plato." ("Printing and the Mind of Man" # 27, for the 1484 Latin edition) Lowndes p. 1877.

GHERARDI Evaristo
Romeyn de Hooghe etched for the first volume 18 portraits and for the second volume other 10. The third volume was not illustrated and appeared in 1729. The portraits are full length. The frontispiece was inserted before the title page and represent a standing woman (Theology ?) surrounded by historical characters. The title is inscribed at the bottom: [HISTORIE / DER / KERKEN / EN / KETTEREN / DOOR / GODFRIED ARNOLD]. The second copy of the frontispiece has been modified: the signature of Romeyn de Hooghe has been cut possibly from the title-page (which includes a small etched plate signed by the artist) and pasted on the name 'Godfried Arnold'. Also the upper part of the text was hidden. The only text left out reads 'KETTEREN DOOR / (R. de Hooghe I.V.D. Coll. R)'. Etching on paper with margins; paltemark: 263 x 160 mm, total: 323 x 200 mm. Sage, John. Rev. Bishop (1652-1711) - Cyprian Works - Scotland
London: (1701). Wherein besides a great many things more briefly considered, the usefulness of fixing the principles of the Cyprianic age is succinctly represented; the main controversie between those of the Church and the Presbyterians is fully and distinctly stated; their main subterfuges are utterly overthrown; large supplements are added to the principles of the Cyprianic age; the Cyprianic Episcopacy is shewn to be inconsistent with a Papacy; and it is demonstrated that Episcopal government was universally delivered to be of Divine Right in the days of St. Cyprian. --- Printed by G. [MARTYN, Henry.]
London: A. and J. Churchill,, 1701. Octavo (191 x 116 mm). Recent full calf, double-rule blindstamped border to boards, spine ruled in blind, red morocco label. Extremities very lightly rubbed, upper margin of title with ragged edge, title and lower margin lightly soiled, leaf edges a little browned in places; a very good copy. First edition, republished in 1720 under the title of The Advantages of the East India Trade to England considered, described by McCulloch as "a profound, able, and most ingenious tract." He goes on to state that "the author is probably the first who has conclusively shown the advantage of employing machinery, and cheaper methods of production, in the manufacture of commodities; and who has shown that such employment is not injurious, but advantageous to the labourers as well as to the other classes of the community. He has, also, set the powerful influence of the division of labour in the most striking point of view, and has illustrated it with a skill and felicity which even Smith has not surpassed, but by which he most probably profited." (The Literature of Political Economy, p.100).
