- Edition originale. (28). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

He symbolizes the triumph of craft over brute strength, usually personified by Isengrim, the greedy and dull-witted wolf. Some of cyclic stories collected around him, such as those telling of the wolf or bear fishing with his tail through a hole in the ice, are found throughout the world; others, like that of the sick lion cured by the wolf’s skin, are derived from Greco-Roman sources. The cycle arose in the area between Flanders and Germany in the 10th and 11th centuries when clerks began to forge Latin beast epics out of popular tales The main literary tradition of Reynard the Fox descends from the extant French ‘branches’ of the Roman de Renart (about 30 in number, nearly 40,000 lines of verse). The facetious portrayal of rustic life, the camel as a papal legate speaking broken French, the animals riding on horses and recounting elaborate dreams all suggest the atmosphere of 13th-century France" (Merriam-Webster’s Encyclopedia of Literature)."Caxton’s immediate successors as printers of the Historye of Reynart the Foxe, Wynkyn de Worde and Richard Pynson, both published illustrated editions using the same woodcuts.         Historie der Sevarambes. Volkeren die een Gedeelte van het darde Vast-land bewoonen, gemeenlyk Zuid-land genaamd

Amsterdam: Willem de Coup, Willem Lamsvelt, Philip Verbeek, and Joannes Lamsvelt, 1701. Small quarto, four parts in one volume, engraved frontispiece by J. Lamsvelt (dated 1701) and 16 plates, paper a little fragile, repairs to the fore-edges of 12 pages and 1 plate, some staining; otherwise a good copy in early vellum, new endpapers. The "Vlamingh edition" Very rare: the "Vlamingh edition" of this fully illustrated account of an imaginary voyage to western Australia, based on the story of the wreck of the VOC ship Vergulde Draeck in 1656. This work was part of a suite of three separately issued works which related to Dutch experiences in Australia. The companion volumes were Willem Vlamingh's exceedingly rare Journaal wegens de Voyagie of 1701, and a second imaginary account of the same region, the tale of the shipwrecked sailor Jacques Sadeur by Gabriel Foigny. At the time of their publishing Vairasse d'Alais, Foigny and Vlamingh were some of the only contemporary works which related to Dutch ambitions in western Australia. Taken as a group, the three works would have been considered an essential introduction to what was known or hypothesised about the Great South Land, and it is certain that the wild imaginings about fabulous lands contributed as much to the enthusiasm for voyages of exploration as the more sober factual accounts. In this sense, the "history" of the Severambes is particularly important, because it is the only one of the three that is illustrated, with marvellous depictions of the imaginary Australian coast.

Third Edition.A grossly mis-numbered printing (and with the author's name misspelled as "Standley" on both dedication pages) includes the lovely frontispiece of the author by Faithorne along with twenty-six 8" high, full-length portraits of different philosophers scattered throughout the text (for examples, see the portraits of Socrates, Xenophon and Diogenes below). The first edition of this work appeared in 1655-1662 in four parts and the second edition of 1687 was the first to contain all four parts together in one volume. This third edition follows the format of the second. Stanley - whose Life of the Author is printed here for the first time - was one of the foremost classical scholars of his day, here presenting the progress of thought in Ancient Greece in the form of a series of critical biographies of the philosophers. Stanley's aim was to provide the necessary information concerning all "those on whom the attribute of Wise was conferred." He "adopted the general structure, the biographical emphasis, the doxographical method characteristic of Diogenes [Laertius]. Stanley's history ran into four editions in England between 1655 and 1743 and was translated into Latin and published in that language at Amsterdam in 1690, Leipzig in 1711, and Venice as late as 1733." [Encyclopedia of Philosophy, VI, p. 227] ¾ leather using contemporary marbled boards. Pages unevenly foxed (and grossly mis-numbered) throughout. Still, a very pretty copy of this fascinating early work on the history of philosophy. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Geometrica Demonstratio Theorematum Hugenianorum

Florence: P A Brigonei, 1701 First Edition. A very good copy; printed on thick paper; occ. spotting; frt. jt. starting. 4to.,. The text is illus. throughout. Grandi's excellent book demonstrating the theorems of Huygens associated with the Logistic Curve. Grandi was a professor at the Univ. of Pisa. The book offered here is a general expression of the solution of a particular problem posed by Vincenzo Viviani in the late 17th century. The solution of the problem - dealing with circular dome construction - was soon forthcoming, provided by Leibniz using the infinitesimal calculus. Huygens had already addressed the mathematics and solution in a general way and impressed his name upon the issues of this particular equation and the curve described by it. It was left to Grandi to provide the rigorous demonstration of the solution and its general properties in this work. Appended is an interesting communication to the mediocre Jesuit mathematician Tomasso Ceva who taught at the Jesuit College in Milan. In it Grandi rebuffs Ceva's admonitions not to fall under the sway of Descartes ( the Society had issued one directive after the other through the mid-seventeenth century proscribing most of the propositions ). Grandi was not simply defending Descartes. The book and the appended response, in the context of ongoing Jesuit proscriptions and hostility to the challenges of mathematical certainty in physics ( e.g., accelerated motion - a key part of Galileo's work ) and astronomy, make a strong opposition argument against the prevailing world view of the church.

Nieuwe Reize na het Zuid-Land... door Jaques Sadeur

Amsterdam: Willem de Coup, Willem Lamsvelt, Philip Verbeek, Jan Lamsvelt, 1701. Small quarto, pages a little dusted, some wear to the title-page including a small chip in the top corner; a very good copy in an attractive period-style binding of full calf, spine banded, red morocco label. The "Vlamingh edition" Rare: the "Vlamingh edition" of Foigny's famous imaginary voyage to Australia. This edition was one of a trio of separate "Southern Continent" works published simultaneously by the enterprising publishers in 1701: the other two were another imaginary voyage, the Histoire des Sevarambes by Vairasse d'Alais, and the account of the very real voyage of Vlamingh, the Journaal Wegen een Voyagie, a great rarity of Australian exploration books. Gabriel de Foigny (ca. 1630-1692) was a Franciscan priest who was defrocked for his scandalous behaviour, upon which he emigrated to Switzerland and converted to Protestantism. First published in 1676, this work is 'perhaps the most famous of all the fictitious accounts of Terra Australis' (Mackaness), and has clear links to the history of voyages and a strong connection with Quiros. The protagonist Jacques Sadeur endures a series of shipwrecks before being plucked from the sea by a gigantic winged monster which drops him on the shores of western Australia, where he is rescued by the ruling hermaphrodite society, and lives with them for the next two decades (around 1650, based on the internal evidence, and thus clearly alluding to the VOC wrecks of that era). Of particular note is the fact that Foigny's book refers to the inhabitants of his Terre Australe as "Australiens" - the first time that the term was used to describe an inhabitant of the southern continent. Records for this Dutch edition are difficult to unravel, chiefly because many library records erroneously list the work as requiring three plates, but this is a bibliographic ghost. The copies of this work in both the Mitchell and Dixson collections do not include any plates, nor is there any evidence that plates were ever present.

A new map of the Terraqueous Globe According to the Latest Discoveries

Oxford: Edward Wells, 1701. Handcoloured copper engraving, 425 x 530 mm. (sheet size), some mild browning yet very good. An English map showing Dutch discoveries. A striking early eighteenth-century English double-hemisphere map with a splendid ornamental border featuring New World Indian archers, Ptolemaic geographers, classical figures and a Celtic warrior enjoying the verdant parklands outside Oxford, with the University visible in the distance. The handcolouring of both the map and ornaments, including the ornamental figures and celestial details, is bright and fresh. The map is from Edward Wells' popular atlas A Treatise of Antient and Present Geography (1700-1). This is a particularly interesting English-published map for its date as the Australian coast is evidently based on the famous seventeenth-century Thevenot map first published in 1663, with the coastline based primarily on the voyages of Tasman, as well as the other Dutch expeditions to the northwest; as with the Thevenot map New Guinea is attached to Cape York. Hence the Wells map is an important forerunner to the later English map of the region published in John Harris' Navigantium atque Itinerantium Bibliotheca (1744). It is interesting to note that despite its date, no explicit mention is made of Dampier. Shirley comments that Wells' atlas was very popular, running into five editions by 1738. It was resurrected in the nineteenth-century with a profusion of editions published up until 1852. Wells was an English divine who taught at Christ Church in Oxford, hence the delightful combination of exotic and parochial elements in the lavish decoration of this arresting map.

An Act for the Better settling and Preserving the Library kept in the House at westminster, Called Cotton-House, in the Name and family of the Cottons, for the benefit of the Publick

, 1701. 1701. London, For the King, 1701. Small folio. pp. 47-52. Disbound. One of the key acts that brought about the formation of the British Museum and Library. The library of Sir Robert Cotton (1571-1631) is the most important collection ever assembled by a private individual in Britain. Amongst its many treasures are the Lindisfarne Gospels and the only surviving copy of Beowulf. Parliamentary legislation in 1701 (the present act) vested Cotton House and the library in a body of trustees, with effect from the death of Sir John Cotton - Cotton's grandson - which occurred in 1702. Four of the trustees were drawn from the family; the remaining three were great officers of state. In 1722 the library moved to Essex House in the Strand and then (because ironically, that building was thought to be too much at risk from fire) in 1730 to Ashburnham House in Little Dean's Yard, Westminster. It was there, in 1731, that a chimney caught fire in the room below that in which the manuscripts were stored. By the time the blaze was extinguished, over 200 of the 950 Cottonian volumes had been destroyed or damaged, among them the Cotton Genesis and one of the two copies of Magna Carta. Following this disaster, the collection was transferred to the Old Dormitory of Westminster School. The Cottonian collection finally became one of the three foundation collections - the only one to have been obtained by gift - at the establishment of the British Museum in 1753.

Het leven en bedryf van Michiel de Ruiter.

Amsterdam, Waasberge, Boom en Goethals, 1701.Folio. Contemporary blind-tooled vellum (1 hinge torn but strongly holding). With allegorical engraved title, engraved printer's device on title-page, engraved portrait, engraved plate of De Ruiter's tomb, double-page plate of the funeral procession and 6 double-page engraved plates of sea-battles and views by Stoopendaal (1 browned). (8),1065,(23) pp.* Third edition, first published in 1687. - Biography of one of the most famous admirals in Dutch history, Michiel Adriaenszn. de Ruyter (1607-1676), also of great interest for Dutch political and economic history. Dealing with the early voyages to Jan Mayen Island (whaling), Morocco (Barbary Coast), during this time his esteem grew among other Dutch captains as he would regularly free Christian slaves by redeeming them at his own expense, and the Baltic: he managed to liberate Nyborg in 1659, for this he was knighted by the Danish king Frederick III of Denmark. After he recaptured Guinea on the English in 1664 he crossed the Atlantic to raid the English colonies in America. Visited the Caribbean islands, delivered supplies to the Dutch colony of St. Eustatius, and was engaged in Spanish-Dutch sea-fights and conquests. Giving the damage he had sustained at a certain moment he decided against an assault on New York to retake New-Netherland. He fought the English in the first three Anglo-Dutch Wars. His most famous exploit was against the English fleet: the Raid on the Medway in 1667. He sailed up the Thames to Chatham and burned three ships and captured the English flagship HMS Royal Charles, which he took with him back to Holland. It was a costly and embarrassing defeat for the English. On 18 March 1678 De Ruyter was given a state funeral when his body was buried in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. He was succeeded as supreme commander by Cornelis Tromp in 1679. De Ruyters' flagship De Zeven Provinciën is being rebuilt in the Dutch town Lelystad. - Some staining otherwise fine. Cat. NHSM II, p.44; Sabin 7405; European Americana V, B701/48.
