COMEDIE E RIME IN LINGUA MILANESE.

Cm.14,8x8,9. Pg.(12), 396; (4), 232. Gamba, 1989. Graesse, IV, 336, segnala altre edizioni. Autore sconosciuto al Lozzi. Codice libreria 128538.

        TESTAMENTUM NOVUM

London: A. & J. Churchil, 1701. n. This is a particularly well-preserved example of a so-called "somber" binding, an appropriately restrained design meant to match the content of the text and used on religious books of the 17th and 18th centuries. The initials on the cover and the inscriptions inside indicate a series of owners (one of whom, William Worth, bears the same name as an Anglican cleric and classical scholar of the day), but the book itself shows virtually no signs of use.. 145 x 80 mm. (5 3/4 x 3 1/4"). 2 p.l., 419 pp. Excellent contemporary dark brown "somber" binding, covers blind-tooled in a cottage roof design with floral accents, the sides and corners densely azured, initials "J. H. H." in center panel of upper cover, front joint possibly very expertly renewed, raised bands, spine compartments with blind-tooled floral centerpiece, newer endpapers, all edges silver. Front free endpaper with ink stamp of Bibliotheca Ovarnforslana; title page with ink inscription of "Will Worth / his book / ye 11 of July 1708" and with the inscription of Tho. John [G or B----] dated September 28th, 1809. Darlow & Moule 4720. A hint of rubbing to joints and extremities, otherwise a fine copy--clean, fresh, and bright internally, and in a virtually unworn binding, so little used as to resist opening. This is a particularly well-preserved example of a so-called "somber" binding, an appropriately restrained design meant to match the content of the text and used on religious books of the 17th and 18th centuries. The initials on the cover and the inscriptions inside indicate a series of owners (one of whom, William Worth, bears the same name as an Anglican cleric and classical scholar of the day), but the book itself shows virtually no signs of use.

Ottimo esemplare molto fresco. Analysis magni problematis isoperimetrici,’ pp. 231-228 and part of Tab. IV in Acta Eruditorum Anno MDCCI

Leipzig: J. Gross, T. Fritsch, F. Groschuf & Ph. W. Stock 1701 - Complete volume, 4to, pp. [ii], 582 with 7 engraved plates (5 folding) (some mostly light browning and foxing, Tab. VI repaired at fold slightly affecting printed area). Contemporary calf, spine gilt (rubbed, ends of spine and corners worn, joints cracked but firm). Old ink ownership inscription on title, Paris bookseller's label on front paste-down. FIRST EDITION OF BERNOULLI’S SOLUTION OF THE ISOPERIMETRIC PROBLEM, THE BIRTH OF THE CALCULUS OF VARIATIONS, later to be developed extensively by Euler and Lagrange. In 1696 Johann Bernoulli (1667-1748) had posed as a challenge to the mathematicians of Europe the problem of finding the curve of quickest descent, the so-called brachistochrone. Solutions were given by the Marquis de L’Hospital (1661-1704), Leibniz, Newton, and by Johann’s brother Jakob (1655-1705) in the May 1697 issue of Acta Eruditorum, At the end of that memoir Jakob raised the isoperimetric problem as a challenge to his readers, but especially to Johann (he even offered Johann a prize of 50 silver ecus for a satisfactory solution within three months). The isoperimetric problem asks for the curve of a given length joining two fixed points in the plane for which a certain integral is a maximum (a special case would be to maximize the area contained between the curve and the straight line joining the two points). “Johann underestimated the complexity of this problem by failing to perceive its variational character; and he furnished an incomplete solution . . . and thereby brought upon himself the merciless criticism of his brother. This was the beginning of alienation and open discord between the brothers – and also the birth of the calculus of variations. A comparison of Jakob’s solution [in the offered work] with Johann’s analysis of the problem . . . clearly shows Johann’s to be inferior. Nevertheless, Jakob was not able to enjoy his triumph, since – for reasons that remain mysterious – the sealed envelope containing Johann’s solution was not opened by the [Paris] Academy until 17 April 1706, the year following Jakob’s death” (DSB, under Johann Bernoulli). After solving the isoperimetric problem, “Jakob was able to furnish the proof [also contained in the offered work], which Johann and Leibniz had been seeking in vain, that the inexpansible and homogeneous catenary is the curve of deepest center of gravity between the points of suspension” (ibid., under Jakob Bernoulli). This important volume also contains another contribution to the isoperimetric problem, by the Swiss mathematician and friend of Isaac Newton, Nicolas Fatio de Duillier (1664-1753), “Excerpta ex responsione Dn. Nic. Fatii Duillierii ad excerpta ex literis Dn. Joh. Bernoullii” (pp. 134-136, and Tab. III); and three other papers by Jacob's brother, Johann Bernoulli: a work on lenses, “Disquisitio catoptrico-dioptrica exhibens reflexionis & refractionis naturam, nova & genuine ratione ex aequilibrii fundamento deductam” (pp. 19-26, and part of Tab. II); “Nova ratio promte construendi radios osculi seu curvaturae in Curvis quibusvis sive algebraicis in sive transcendentibus. Item methodus eosdem analytice determinandi in curvis algebraicis per vulgarem differentialium calculum eruta” (pp. 136-140); and “Multisectio anguli vel arcus, duplici aequatione universali exhibita inserviens generali determination omnium zonarum quadrabilium cycloideis” (pp. 170-175).         A New Map of Present Asia Present Asia Distinguisht into its general Divisions or Countries together with their Capital Cities Chief Rivers Mountain etc.

Oxford: WELLS, Edward, 1701. unbound. Michael Burghers. Map. Uncolored copper plate engraving. Image measures 14 3/8" x 19.5". This striking map of Asia depicts the continent in beautiful detail from the Mediterranean Sea and Italy east to include Japan. The geography of the encloses region is richly defined, with rivers, deltas, cities and lakes notes and with elevation rendered in profile. Particularly notable is the mapping of northeastern Asia. Lake Chimay (Chiama Lake), the mythical lake located in northern Burma which was believed to be the source of the river system in Southeast Asia is identified. The mysterious Companies Land is also identified. Company's Land and Gamma Land were considered to be the early mappings of the Kurin Islands discovered by Maerten de Vries and Cornelis Jansz Coen in 1643. They believed that these islands were part of America, which was separated from Asia by the Strait of Vries. In 1729, Bering finally debunked their myth, but the islands appeared in maps for another 50 years. The map includes beautiful cartouches. The map is in very good condition with minor wear along centerfold. Some scuffing over Bay of Bengal. Slight stains in lower quadrants. Flattened and lined with archival paper. Published in "A New Sett of Maps Both of Antient and Present Geography". Edward Wells (1667-1727), a mathematician and geographer, dedicated this atlas to the young Duke of Gloucester, son of the future Queen Anne. The Duke (age 11) was studying at Oxford at the time of printing and his tutelage may account for Wells' unusually sparse style. Instead of focusing on grand decoration, perhaps Wells used a simpler approach for educational purposes.

De locis solidis secunda divinatio geometrica in quinque libros iniuria temporum amissos Aristaei senioris geometrae ? Opus conicum continens elementa tractatuum.

Florence, Brigonci, 1701 - Folio (330 x 235 mm), pp [xxiv] 12, with two folding engraved plates and an engraved portrait of Galileo bound at end; a fine large, clean copy in contemporary carta rustica with blue paper spine. £3500A large-paper copy of final published work of Viviani, representing the culmination of his efforts to reconstruct a lost manuscript by Aristaeus the Elder on the exposition of curves. Nearing the end of his life, Viviani also took the opportunity of the present work's publication to offer a final tribute to his mentor, Galileo: in 1693 Viviani had commenced the transformation of his own home into a veritable shrine to that figure, and here provides for the reader three engravings illustrating his 'Casa Deo Data'.'Viviani's first project was an attempted restoration of a work by Aristaeus the Elder, De locis solidis secunda divinatio geometrica, which Viviani undertook when he was twenty-four. Aristaeus' work is believed to have been the first methodical exposition of the curves discovered by Menaechmus; but since it has been entirely lost, it is difficult to estimate how close Viviani came to the original work' (DSB). A rudimentary version of Viviani's effort was printed in Florence in 1673; the present volume is the full work as corrected and expanded by the author (as explained on the title page).Historiographically speaking, the work makes quite an effort to resuscitate the reputation and standing of Galileo; Viviani proudly notes that he is the student of 'magni Galilaei' on the title page and devotes a curious section at the end of the work entirely to his former teacher. Here Viviani takes advantage of the opportunity to not only dedicate his work to his patron, Louis XIV, but also to express his thanks for the pension which the King of France has granted him and which has enabled him to remodel his home. The interested reader is provided with a transcription of each plaque he has added to the façade of his house, identified with letters corresponding to those on the engraved plates. Each inscription lauds Galileo in some way; one lengthy piece takes a rather bold stand and decries the 'envious opponents' of Galileo who raised 'false accusations' against him. To ensure the shunned astronomer's immortality, Viviani proudly displays the bust of Galileo he has placed above his portal, reproduced here in a full-page engraved portrait plate.Carli and Favaro 400; Cinti 167; Riccardi II 629

Bel exemplaire.
