An assemblage of 43 manuscript and printed royal and viceroyal decrees and some 25 related documents.

Barcelona, Madrid, Valldolid (Spain), Aranjuez, Mexico City, & elsewhere Small 4to, folio, & larger. Approximately 135 ff.. 1701?-79 Explaining why manuscript cedularios were made in the era of the printing press is called for here, and the answer is simple: The number of copies that were printed of any given royal cédula tended to be smaller than the number of lawyers, clerks, judges, and other legal sorts who needed a copy. And within months of the issuance of the decree, no printed copies were available for love or money. Owning the various editions of the Recopilación de leyes de Indias was insufficient, for most cédulas related to => specific issues peculiar to one person, place, institution, or event, and such specificity is not included in the recopilaciones, though the royal decrees provided good, useful precedents to cite. QED: Every colonial-era lawyer had to resort to maintaining his own cedulario. This cedulario was assembled in Mexico during the 18th century, probably around 1778 or 1780, for the use of a lawyer before the audiencia, or perhaps for an audiencia judge or a judge's staff member. The decrees relate to a wide variety of topics: criminal cases, the army and navy, confiscation of property, the use of stamped paper, the royal treasury, royal officials in Nicaragua, cabildos, proselytization of Indians, commodities, dress codes, bigamy, and other social matters in the regions of Mexico, New Galicia, and Guatemala. Of the 43 items, 22 are printed decrees (all but one printed in Spain) and the remaining 21 are manuscript. Fifteen bear => true (rather than stamped) royal signatures: six are signed by Felipe V, and nine are by Ferdinand VI. Of the 28 documents not signed by a king, 17 are printed and 11 are manuscript. The documents are sewn and were once bound; binding removed some time ago. 18th-century numbering of documents shows that 10 documents were removed som time before the collection came into our hands. There are some stains, a few holes at folds, a few edges a little tattered — nothing worse. => A sound and interesting collection.

De locis solidis secunda divinatio geometrica in quinque libros iniuria temporum amissos Aristaei senioris geometrae ? Opus conicum continens elementa tractatuum.

Florence, Brigonci, 1701 - Folio (330 x 235 mm), pp [xxiv] 12, with two folding engraved plates and an engraved portrait of Galileo bound at end; a fine large, clean copy in contemporary carta rustica with blue paper spine. £3500A large-paper copy of final published work of Viviani, representing the culmination of his efforts to reconstruct a lost manuscript by Aristaeus the Elder on the exposition of curves. Nearing the end of his life, Viviani also took the opportunity of the present work's publication to offer a final tribute to his mentor, Galileo: in 1693 Viviani had commenced the transformation of his own home into a veritable shrine to that figure, and here provides for the reader three engravings illustrating his 'Casa Deo Data'.'Viviani's first project was an attempted restoration of a work by Aristaeus the Elder, De locis solidis secunda divinatio geometrica, which Viviani undertook when he was twenty-four. Aristaeus' work is believed to have been the first methodical exposition of the curves discovered by Menaechmus; but since it has been entirely lost, it is difficult to estimate how close Viviani came to the original work' (DSB). A rudimentary version of Viviani's effort was printed in Florence in 1673; the present volume is the full work as corrected and expanded by the author (as explained on the title page).Historiographically speaking, the work makes quite an effort to resuscitate the reputation and standing of Galileo; Viviani proudly notes that he is the student of 'magni Galilaei' on the title page and devotes a curious section at the end of the work entirely to his former teacher. Here Viviani takes advantage of the opportunity to not only dedicate his work to his patron, Louis XIV, but also to express his thanks for the pension which the King of France has granted him and which has enabled him to remodel his home. The interested reader is provided with a transcription of each plaque he has added to the façade of his house, identified with letters corresponding to those on the engraved plates. Each inscription lauds Galileo in some way; one lengthy piece takes a rather bold stand and decries the 'envious opponents' of Galileo who raised 'false accusations' against him. To ensure the shunned astronomer's immortality, Viviani proudly displays the bust of Galileo he has placed above his portal, reproduced here in a full-page engraved portrait plate.Carli and Favaro 400; Cinti 167; Riccardi II 629

Scientia navalis seu tractatus de construendis ac dirigendis navibus.St. Petersburg: Typis Academiae Scientiarum, 1749.

"First edition of the work, which enunciated for the first time the principles of hydrostatics, with outstanding provenance: the copy of the great explorer and mathematician Charles Marie de La Condamine (1701-1774). A very good and entirely unrestored copy, in contemporary binding, of Euler's first large work on fluid mechanics. "Together, these [two volumes] are second among the great treatises on rational mechanics by which Euler created the field as we now know it... [in this work Euler] builds a 'mansion of analysis' that includes all the elementary parts of hydrostatics as we know them today." (Enetröm).<br/><br/> <i>Provenance:</i> La Condamine was a French explorer, geographer, and mathematician. "He spent ten years in present-day Ecuador measuring the length of a degree latitude at the equator and preparing the first map of the Amazon region based on astronomical observations... Newton had posited [in his <i>Principia</i>] that the Earth is not a perfect sphere, but bulges around the equator and is flattened at the poles. Newton's opinion had raised a huge controversy among French scientists. Pierre Louis Maupertuis, Alexis Claude Clairaut, and Pierre Charles Le Monnier traveled to Lapland, where they were to measure the length of several degrees of latitude orthogonal to the arctic circle, while Louis Godin, Pierre Bouguer, and La Condamine were sent to South America to perform similar measurements around the equator... The scientific results of the expedition were unambiguous: the Earth is indeed a spheroid flattened at the poles as was believed by Newton." (Wikipedia). <br/><br/> "Together with [the second volume of this work], Euler establishes his principles of hydrostatics, providing a basis for the scientific foundation for the theory of naval architecture... Among the topics mentioned in these two volumes are: the idea of centroid and metacenter as distinct from center of gravity; a theory of stability based on the direction of the restoring torque in a small displacement; the earliest treatment of three-dimensional motion of a general rigid body in response to an applied torque; the theory of small oscillations of floating bodies; solutions of specific problems based on local use of Newton's Law of Resistance. <br/><br/> "Euler also shows that the principle, written in modern notation as <i>F = -∫p dS</i> and <i>p = </i>r<i>gh</i>, where <i>p</i> is pressure, r is density, <i>g</i> is the force of gravity per unit mass, and <i>F</i> is the force, is both necessary and sufficient for the equlibrium of incompressible fluids near the earth's surface. It is on this principle that he builds a 'mansion of analysis' that includes all the elementary parts of hydrostatics as we know them today.". "Two volumes, 4to (249 x 195 mm), pp. [2], [1-3] 4-44, [2], 1-444 and 37 folding engraved plates; [2], [1] 2-534 and 28 folding engraved plates. Contemporary French calf, capitals, corners, and hinges with some wear but still strong, entirely unrestored. Both titles with the exlibris stamp of La Condamine. A few leaves with some spoting but in general clean and fresh throughout. Scarce."

      - Map shows south of Spain, embracing the area between Motril in the province of Granada in the east, Gibraltar in the south and Cadiz and Sanlúcar de Barrameda in the west. In-set maps show Menorca, Ceuta and views of Malaga, Gibraltar and Cadiz. The map shows the area after the War of the Spanish Succession (1701&#150;1714), when Gibraltar was given To Britain in 1713 in the Treaty of Utrecht to secure Britain's withdrawal from the war. The note in the in-set map of Ceuta mentiones it was a part of Morocco under Moulay Ismail from 1694 to 1727. Minorca temporarily became a British possession in 1708 until 1756, when France captured the island after the Siege of Fort St Philip during the the Seven Years' War. Matthäus Seutter (1678-1757) was one of the most prominent German publishers of the 18th century. He started his apprenticeship under the most famous engraver of the time Johann-Baptist Homann. In 1732 he received a title of Imperial Geographer by German Emperor Charles VI. After Matthäus&#146; death his son took over the firm for mere five years, until his death in 1762. After that the firm was divided between the printing firm Probst and Seutter&#146;s son-in-law Tobias Conrad Lotter. The map can be dated after 1741, when Seutter received a privilege, mentioned in the cartouche under the title.

HISTORIA DE LA CONQUISTA DE LA PROVINCIA DE EL ITZA, REDUCCION, Y PROGRESSOS DE LA DE EL LACANDON, Y OTRAS NACIONES DE INDIOS BARBAROS, DE LA MEDIACION DE EL REYNO DE GUATIMALA, A LAS PROVINCIAS DE YUCATAN, EN LA AMERICA SEPTENTRIONAL

[Madrid, 1701. Folio. Contemporary full limp vellum, manuscript spine title, modern leather cords and ties. Moderate wear and soiling, some old ink notations on front cover. Minor dampstaining and toning, early Spanish ownership signature and later inked stamp of Alfred Tozzer on titlepage. Overall good plus. Lacking colophon leaf and front free endpaper. A handsome copy of this story of the Itza people in what is now northern Guatemala, who finally succumbed to Spanish forces in 1697. Although the author never set foot in the New World, his high position in the Consejo de Indias and other royal councils gave him access to much important documentation for the writing of this prized history of the conquest of the Izta Maya and the attempted conquest of the Lacandón Indians during the last decades of the 17th century; the conquest of Petén and the misadventures of Roque de Soberanis y Senteno and Martín de Urzúa, two governors of the Yucatán, make for very exciting reading. This is the first published book dedicated solely to the history of the Yucatán and the Maya, here offered in its first edition, second issue (with the corrected catchword "glas" at the foot of the recto of preliminary leaf F2). Bedmar y Narvaez printed the titlepage in black and red and the text is in double-column format. This copy contains both the engraved "frontispiece" and the black and red titlepage, but, as usual, not the very rare colophon. Although touted as "Primera parte" on the titlepage, there were no further parts; this HISTORIA… is complete, "all published.

VATICINIUM SEVERI ET LEONIS IMPERATORUM [ORACLES OF LEO THE WISE]

BOOK DESCRIPTION; ILLUSTRATED MANUSCRIPT IN LATIN ON PAPER, Spain or Italy, dated 1701, 218 x 168 mm., 33 leaves, complete (collation i9 [1 cancelled], ii14, iii10), written by a single scribe in a cursive script. BINDING: Modern paper binding. TEXT: A copy of a printed book, this manuscript contains a series of 16 finely executed, charming drawings, and testifies to the persistent interest in the sibylline prophecies concerning Byzantium, reinterpreted here in the context of the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Title page, Vaticinium/ Severi et Leonis/ imperatorum/ in quo videtur finis Turcarum/ una aliis cum nonnullis in hac re/ Vaticiniis/ in Brescia apresso Pietro Maria/ Marchetti 1596/ con licenza de Superiori/ E trasladado do impresso por/ Sum Curioso anno de 1684 e/ Agora segunda ves por outro mode/ 1701 (Prophetic visions of the emperors Severus [Alexander] and Leonis [Leo VI the Wise] in which one sees the end of the Turks, with some other prophecies on the subject, printed in Brescia by Pietro Maria Marchetti in 1596 with the license of the Superiors. And copied from the imprint by a curious in the year 1684, [and] now for a second time by another). First printed edition, Brescia, Pietro Maria Marchetti, 1596; our manuscript is a copy of this edition. No medieval copy of the Greek text of the oracles is known. It is recorded in 57 copies or fragments, none older than the sixteenth century; modern edition in an unpublished dissertation by J. Vereecken, Ghent, 1986. This text, a series of sibylline oracles concerning the fate of Greece, Byzantium, and Islam, as well as the future of good and evil, circulated throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance as the Oracles of Leo the Wise (emperor 886-912). It mixes magic with religion and obscure divination with practical political expediency. By 1200, the prophecies were circulated under the name of Leo the Wise; in the late thirteenth century they were the source for the Pseudo-Joachim of Fiore Vaticinium about the papacy. After the fall of Byzantium and with the rise of the Ottoman Empire, this text regained their popularity as part of the propaganda against the Turks. ILLUSTRATIONS: 16 pen-and-ink drawings (105 x 73 mm.), first three drawn directly on the page; last 13 pasted onto the sheets, a few loose. Copies after the woodcuts of the printed edition, the drawings are nevertheless charming, the watercolor wash adding nuance to the pen-and-ink outlines. They are closely linked to the text, which is composed in two parts, as an explication of the illustration, including an epigram and an explanation; a comparable system comparable was used in contemporary emblem books such as Alciati?'s Emblemata (printed 1550). The complex iconography is related to that of the Pseudo-Joachim of Fiore Vaticinium: f. 5v, two crows biting a snake; f. 8v, eagle, a cross in its beak; f. 10v, unicorn, a crescent moon on its haunch; f. 12v, ox reclining beneath two bust-length figures; f. 13v, monster (bear with the head of a griffon) nursing its four babies; f. 14v, king holding a sickle and a rose, crowned by an angel; f. 16v, city with a mosque, decapitated head below; f. 17v, monster bearing three standards (the Empire, the Papacy, and the Ottomans [?]); f. 18v, throne, a dismembered arm below; f. 19v, unicorn, a crescent moon on its haunch; f. 20v, embalmed emperor with an angel above and two monsters below; f. 21v, two female figures, personifying the Sun and the Moon; f. 22v, king holding a scepter; f. 23v, shepherd; f. 25v, angel with the imperial crown; f. 26v, emperor and the pope. PROVENANCE: Copy of a book printed in Brescia in 1596, possibly in Spain (title partially translated into Spanish); owner?'s signature crossed out, now unreadable. CONDITION: some worm holes, spots and signs of use, some fading of text from glue, but generally in very good condition. (TM 45)

- First Edition. It was added at the end of volume 4 edicts separate pagination, last January 20, 1706 A copy of 1714 in Rennes, we have surprisingly found nothing in the BN of France and England, apart from the re-release of 1714 Full-time calf, spine tooled raised. Part of title in red morocco with a missing part. Top cap partially torn. Lower cap with rugged gaps. Wormholes on the back. The edicts trace the history of Protestantism in a particular way, as prohibited, bullying and spoliation, the collection contains obviously the king's edict of the month of October 1685 "On revocation of him Nantes & defenses of make any public exercise of RPR in his kingdom. "In the end there is volume 4 new edicts, the last which prohibits protesting sell their personal property for 3 years. While the edicts of the XVI led to the Edict of Nantes and are made mostly of permissions and protections, those of this contemporary consist mainly of prohibitions and exclusions. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale.

Fine. Chez Pierre Mortier, àAmsterdam s.d. [1701], in-12 (9,5x14,5cm), (12) 354pp. [mal chiff. 308] (4), relié. - New edition illustrated Unsigned allegorical frontispiece.
