Carte Marine depuis Suratte jusqu'au Detroit de Malaca

"Rare and important chart of the Indian Ocean, illustrating the route of the Jesuit priest Guy Tachard in 1697. The map extends to show the Maldives, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), much of India, the flood plains of the Ganges River, Burma, and continuing around to Malacca on the Malaysian Peninsula. Shows most of Sumatra and names the Aceh region. Three insets detail the vicinity of Goa, the Port of Negrailles, and the Port of Mergui in Burma. Copper engraving, in very good condition. Guy Tachard (1651-1712), was a Jesuit missionary and mathematician, who made 2 embassy's to the Kingdom of Siam for King Louis XIV. Taachard was first sent to Siam in 1685 with five other Jesuits under Superior Jean de Fontaney, on an embassy to Siam led by Chevalier de Chaumont and François - Timoléon de Choisy, and accompanied by Claude de Forbin. The objective of the Jesuits was to complete a scientific expedition to the Indies and China. Enticed by the Greek Constantine Phaulkon, he returned to France to suggest an alliance with the king of Siam Narai to Louis XIV. The two ships of the embassy returned to France with a Siamese embassy, led by the Siamese ambassador Kosa Pan, who was bringing a proposal for an eternal alliance between France and Siam. The embassy stayed in France from June 1686 to March 1687. Tachard joined the second embassy to Siam in March 1687, organized by Colbert. The embassy consisted in five warships, led by General Desfarges, in part to return with the members of Siamese embassy. The mission was led by Simon de la Loubère and Claude Céberet du Boullay, director of the French East India Company. The disambarkment of French troops in Bangkok and Mergui led to strong nationalistic movements in Siam directed by Phra Petratcha, and ultimately resulted in the 1688 Siamese revolution in which king Narai died, Phaulkon was executed, and Phra Petratcha became king. Desfarges negotiated to return with his men to Pondicherry. In the later part of 1689, Desfarges captured the island of Phuket in an attempt to restore French control. Tachard, with Siamese envoys, translating the letter of king Narai to Pope Innocent XI, December 1688. Meanwhile Tachard returned to France with the title of ""Ambassador Extraordinary for the King of Siam"", accompanied by Ok - khun Chamnan, and visited the Vatican in January 1688. He and his Siamese embassy met with Pope Innocent XI and translated Narai's letter to him. In 1690, when Tachard tried to return to Siam, a revolution had happened, King Narai was already dead, and a new king was on the throne. Tachard had to stop at Pondicherry and return to France without obtaining a permission to enter the country. In 1697, Tachard again went to Siam, and managed to enter the country this time. He met with Kosa Pan, now Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the new king Petracha, but the meeting did not result in any significant agreements." Parigi Paris 730 487

- First Edition. TESTAMENTUM NOVUM

London: A. & J. Churchil, 1701. n. This is a particularly well-preserved example of a so-called "somber" binding, an appropriately restrained design meant to match the content of the text and used on religious books of the 17th and 18th centuries. The initials on the cover and the inscriptions inside indicate a series of owners (one of whom, William Worth, bears the same name as an Anglican cleric and classical scholar of the day), but the book itself shows virtually no signs of use.. 145 x 80 mm. (5 3/4 x 3 1/4"). 2 p.l., 419 pp. Excellent contemporary dark brown "somber" binding, covers blind-tooled in a cottage roof design with floral accents, the sides and corners densely azured, initials "J. H. H." in center panel of upper cover, front joint possibly very expertly renewed, raised bands, spine compartments with blind-tooled floral centerpiece, newer endpapers, all edges silver. Front free endpaper with ink stamp of Bibliotheca Ovarnforslana; title page with ink inscription of "Will Worth / his book / ye 11 of July 1708" and with the inscription of Tho. John [G or B----] dated September 28th, 1809. Darlow & Moule 4720. A hint of rubbing to joints and extremities, otherwise a fine copy--clean, fresh, and bright internally, and in a virtually unworn binding, so little used as to resist opening. This is a particularly well-preserved example of a so-called "somber" binding, an appropriately restrained design meant to match the content of the text and used on religious books of the 17th and 18th centuries. The initials on the cover and the inscriptions inside indicate a series of owners (one of whom, William Worth, bears the same name as an Anglican cleric and classical scholar of the day), but the book itself shows virtually no signs of use.

Conformità delle cerimonie Chinesi, colla idolatria Greca, e Romana. In conferma dell’Apologia de Domenicani Missionarj della China. Opera di un Religioso Dottore, e Professore di Teologia.

appresso gli Heredi di Cornelio d'Egmond,, Colonia, 1701 - In 8° (148 x 97), pp. 158. Leg. pergamena dell’epoca. Tit. calligrafato sul dorso. Tagli spruzzati rossi. Ottimo esemplare molto fresco.

An assemblage of 43 manuscript and printed royal and viceroyal decrees and some 25 related documents.

Barcelona, Madrid, Valldolid (Spain), Aranjuez, Mexico City, & elsewhere Small 4to, folio, & larger. Approximately 135 ff.. 1701–79 Explaining why manuscript cedularios were made in the era of the printing press is called for here, and the answer is simple: The number of copies that were printed of any given royal cédula tended to be smaller than the number of lawyers, clerks, judges, and other legal sorts who needed a copy. And within months of the issuance of the decree, no printed copies were available for love or money. Owning the various editions of the Recopilación de leyes de Indias was insufficient, for most cédulas related to => specific issues peculiar to one person, place, institution, or event, and such specificity is not included in the recopilaciones, though the royal decrees provided good, useful precedents to cite. QED: Every colonial-era lawyer had to resort to maintaining his own cedulario. This cedulario was assembled in Mexico during the 18th century, probably around 1778 or 1780, for the use of a lawyer before the audiencia, or perhaps for an audiencia judge or a judge's staff member. The decrees relate to a wide variety of topics: criminal cases, the army and navy, confiscation of property, the use of stamped paper, the royal treasury, royal officials in Nicaragua, cabildos, proselytization of Indians, commodities, dress codes, bigamy, and other social matters in the regions of Mexico, New Galicia, and Guatemala. Of the 43 items, 22 are printed decrees (all but one printed in Spain) and the remaining 21 are manuscript. Fifteen bear => true (rather than stamped) royal signatures: six are signed by Felipe V, and nine are by Ferdinand VI. Of the 28 documents not signed by a king, 17 are printed and 11 are manuscript. The documents are sewn and were once bound; binding removed some time ago. 18th-century numbering of documents shows that 10 documents were removed som time before the collection came into our hands. There are some stains, a few holes at folds, a few edges a little tattered — nothing worse. => A sound and interesting collection.

A New Map of Present Asia Present Asia Distinguisht into its general Divisions or Countries together with their Capital Cities Chief Rivers Mountain etc.

Oxford: WELLS, Edward, 1701. unbound. Michael Burghers. Map. Uncolored copper plate engraving. Image measures 14 3/8" x 19.5". This striking map of Asia depicts the continent in beautiful detail from the Mediterranean Sea and Italy east to include Japan. The geography of the encloses region is richly defined, with rivers, deltas, cities and lakes notes and with elevation rendered in profile. Particularly notable is the mapping of northeastern Asia. Lake Chimay (Chiama Lake), the mythical lake located in northern Burma which was believed to be the source of the river system in Southeast Asia is identified. The mysterious Companies Land is also identified. Company's Land and Gamma Land were considered to be the early mappings of the Kurin Islands discovered by Maerten de Vries and Cornelis Jansz Coen in 1643. They believed that these islands were part of America, which was separated from Asia by the Strait of Vries. In 1729, Bering finally debunked their myth, but the islands appeared in maps for another 50 years. The map includes beautiful cartouches. The map is in very good condition with minor wear along centerfold. Some scuffing over Bay of Bengal. Slight stains in lower quadrants. Flattened and lined with archival paper. Published in "A New Sett of Maps Both of Antient and Present Geography". Edward Wells (1667-1727), a mathematician and geographer, dedicated this atlas to the young Duke of Gloucester, son of the future Queen Anne. The Duke (age 11) was studying at Oxford at the time of printing and his tutelage may account for Wells' unusually sparse style. Instead of focusing on grand decoration, perhaps Wells used a simpler approach for educational purposes.
